Dawn of War: Where They Belong
The more things change, the more they stay the same. If there is no change, how can the universe have a future where everyone thrives and evil dies? Only when the forces of Order come together can Chaos truly fall.
Chapter 8: Section 8 - 1
'Kill them'. That was the order given from her lips to the others. It didn't take them long to storm the fortress. They appear at multiple areas and rush at their foes. The blade slides in the side and shoulder of many. It is painful, quick, and many more die from the experience; there is no moment of crying for help. Only a quick death. Carl is fortunate that the blade stuck his shoulder. If he didn't move fast enough, his heart would be gone. With the use of his right arm, he goes for the gun and squeezes the trigger. The shot didn't kill his opponent; however, it is enough to stagger them. A second shot hits the enemy in the head. To his surprise, Suu comes to his aid and helps him up. He can't believe the eldar are attacking the base with no caution. They look at the fallen eldar and see the material is different from the others.
He says, "These are not the eldar from Alaitoc. They are not attacking us."
Suu adds, "I agree, but this isn't the time to keep guessing. We arrive just in time to help your people, but there is still many of them under attacking. The fire warriors and kroot packs are with you. We need to get to the front."
As they rush to rally others to counter attack the surprise, Commissar Elara keeps herself busy as she helps where she can and keeps the front intact.
She roars, "The eldar have broken through. We can not let this go unpunished. Do not give up. Keep fighting."
At her side, Asuki joins her and says, "We arrived just in time. The other areas have been taken care of, but there are many of your soldiers dead. The eldar have gone too far this time. There can be mercy for them if they lay down their arms and explain their actions."
Elara looks at Asuki and replies, "Mercy?! You want us to give them mercy?! The only forgiveness they shall receive is the bolter I send through each of their heads. That is the mercy they shall have. There is and will be no mercy from the imperial guardians!"
Having just finished her words, a powerful warp blast throws them back. The pair look at the front to see her walking forward as she orders her kin to fall back behind her. Shas'El Asuki and Commissar Elara see her walk calmly towards them. The warp is sparking from her weapon and body. She slowly takes in more and stops upon seeing her foes.
Xiwe says, "This is your only chance to walk away. I am here to finish what should have been done. Step aside before I send you to an early grave."
Elara pulls out her sword, "There will be no retreat for an imperial commissar. I will stop you."
Asuki aims her pulse rifle, "You threaten the greater good and all that it stands for. Your madness must be stopped."
Xiwe smiles at the foolish attempt they try. Before they can rush at her, Xiwe appears beside them both. Elara tries to swing her sword only to see her attempt countered. Asuki uses the back end of the gun to try and hit her. With a quick motion, Xiwe trips Asuki and kicks her back with a warp kick. Elara pulls out her combat knife and tries her best to strike her. After three attempts, Xiwe easily uses the warp to throw her to the side. Asuki recovers and fires her weapon at Xiwe. The blast from her rifle is easily stopped with a warp shield. Asuki gets close to her and tries again to take her down. Xiwe surprises foe with another surprising kick. The method sends Asuki to the ground. Elara helps her up and they both stand side to side.
Elara holds her combat knife, "You won't win, eldar witch. I urge you to stand down."
Asuki adds, "The Great Good will overcome you. Stop your madness and end this conflict."
Xiwe makes no reply. Instead, she lets her fingers reply with her answer. The warp passes through her body with a surge. She roars at the pair and sends a strong warp blast at them. It throws them and the defensive line behind back. Xiwe smiles at how weak they are and continues to step forward. Though the eldar of Ctho have loss a few warriors, they stand more united. A stray of bullets his the ground just ahead of Xiwe. She looks up to see Carl and Suu ready to fight her.
Carl says, "Stand down now, farseer. You are not welcome here and have attacked an imperial base. This is your last chance to stop."
Suu orders her, "By the alliance terms, I order you to surrender and submit yourself for punishment. Turn back now and cease this pointless battle."
Xiwe answers, "You really believe that I will stop? Let me show you all how foolish your words are."
Before she can unleash more of the warp, it comes to everyone. The area is null and quiet. The void blocks out much of the warp. To everyone surprises and not a moment too late, Noble One Max Johnson steps forward with rage in his eyes. Xiwe looks at him with rage in her eyes.
Max says, "I will say this to you only once before I am force to kill you. Get off this imperial planet and find your kind a new home. You have slain more than enough men and women here. Turn back and leave now."
Xiwe roars and lets the warp enter her body. Max responds as he rushes at her and cancels out the warp around the area. To her surprise, Xiwe looks at him to see a hollow, cold person move at him with unnatural powers. Max retrieves Elara's sword from the ground and slams it against the lance of Xiwe. The void comes out and expands; it frightens the eldar as they leap away from this new danger. She falls back from him and growls with rage. The imperial army shouts and cheers for their leader as he drives her back.
He says, "If this is how it must be, so be it. You must die now."
Xiwe gives herself a charge of warp energy, "The only one that dies here is you."
Xiwe moves at Max with increased speed; however, Max counters her speed with some of his own. He falls back to the ground and fires a bolter round at her. The bullet stops her advancement and allows Max to quickly rush at her. They exchange blows with their weapons each time. The eldar of Ctho are amazed that he is able to keep pace with her. With every blow, the blank powers of Max slows her down. Xiwe leaps away only to discover she can't jump back as far as she wants. She draws on the warp only to see it disappear from her as fast as it comes. Max nearly slices at the face only to give her a small cut on the cheek. Before the fighting can continue any more, a web way portal opens and Kayleth appears in between them. She faces Xiwe.
Kayleth says, "Stop this assault right now. You are putting your warriors and kin in danger. Max will kill you if you continue this."
Xiwe orders her, "Stand aside at once. You have failed to kill him and now I must save this galaxy from the danger he represents."
Max relaxes his guard and steps towards the side of Kayleth. The eldar are caught off guard, but now things are interesting for him.
He asks, "What are you rambling about? How am I a threat to you and the eldar?"
Xiwe replies, "Your abilities and powers can change everything. If the enemy were to obtain you, then you would be more than an asset to them. The future of Ctho and Alaitoc must survive with your death. You can not join the Sons of Malice. You will only help them achieve their purpose."
Kayleth growls at the farseer and says, "So, you believe that Max will be the death of just us? Or, do you believe he will be the death of this galaxy? Your need to eliminate him is more troublesome than your attitude. Stop this at once and return to the Faded Light. Your actions have only caused us more harm."
To her surprise, Max locks Kayleth by her arms with his knife near her body. Xiwe shows signs of worry.
She says, "Let her go now. I will not allow you to harm her."
Max looks on with rage and shouts, "This is the last time I will say this. Leave the planet now and take your damn kin with you. The eldar are not welcome on Xoen any more. Don't force me to kill her."
Kayleth asks, "Why are you doing this? I am not the threat to you."
He squeezes her arm and pokes her side with his bolter. Xiwe wants to risk it; Max sees that this plan won't work. He whispers to Kayleth and apologies to her. She tries to ask him why and only feels the void of the nothingness come out at an alarming pace. Xiwe, Carl, Elara, Asuki, Suu and everyone nearby feel the void come at them. Further away, people feel the cold and hollow feeling come at them. Even the tau within their fortress feel something is wrong as communications are full of static. Xiwe orders her kin to back off, but Kayleth becomes frighten and weak. Max twists her arm more. He orders the eldar of Ctho to leave once more. Far away on the Faded Light, Veldoran and Shelia experience the coldness from the imperial fortress. They try to contact their leaders through telepathic only to feel cut off.
Max shouts again, "LEAVE NOW AND DO NOT COME BACK! DO NOT MAKE ME KILL YOU HERE!"
Xiwe fears him more than before and orders her kin back to the Faded Light. Kayleth continues to be frighten of what can happen. Xiwe begs for Max to let her go. He sighs out of exhaustion and lets her go. Kayleth leaps away from him and looks at him. Max stands before them as through nothing can't control him. He steps to forward and with no hesitation, Xiwe leaps through the portal. Only Kayleth stands before Max afraid and unsure as to who he is.
She asks, "What happen to you, Max? Why threat me as the enemy? I am on your side."
Max walks over and lets his blank powers disappear from the field slowly. Everyone looks at him to see what he will do to her. The communications come back slowly and the warp returns to her with ease. Once he is close, Max looks into her eyes with rage once more.
He answers, "I don't want to see your kind on Xoen any more. I am ordering you to get out of the Primarex system and go find your own home elsewhere. Any eldar seen in this system will be captured and only executed if I say so. You are trespassing as of now."
Kayleth argues, "This was not the eldar of Alaitoc. Xiwe and those of Ctho acted on their own orders. Surely, you are not bline to..."
He takes another step to her and lets his abilities stretch out a little. Kayleth minds her words carefully and reaches for her blade.
Max replies, "If you value your life as much as I once cared for you, then you will leave now. I would hate for your craftworld to suffer without you alive."
With her words falling on death ears, she leaves and returns back to the Faded Light.
Chapter 8: Section 8 - 2
There are many slain and dead among the ground. Though the eldar are gone, this can not happen again. They collect the dead and bury them far from the land. Each dog tag is taken and placed in the memory vault. Max orders everyone to return to their duty as he goes to find Lina. Elara, Asuki, Carl and Suu can't believe how frightening Max has become over time. The blank powers and abilities keep the eldar back; no more are they welcome to be on Xoen ever again. Never again are they allowed to pass through the Primarex system. As they continue to clean up and bury the dead, many don't know what comes next. Lina contacts Max by radio.
She says, "I will set up a meeting with the tau leaders and make sure they are ready to hear you. I have made some additional gear for you based on the tome and its words. It is easy, but it will require time."
Max replies, "Do what you can and thank you. I do want to meet with the tau and help them speed up the process on finding them a home."
Aboard the Faded Light and drifting from the planet, the issues between the eldar are not in agreement. On one side, Kayleth and her kind stand annoyed. On the other, Xiwe and her support stand by their choices.
Kayleth says, "Your actions was a complete waste of time and warriors. Now, we are drifting again with no ground under our feet. Is killing him your only problem when we have orks in the galaxy to deal with?"
Xiwe replies, "This issue was yours to deal with long before you came out here with your kin. Now, it is mine to fix since you are unreliable. Max will be the death of us all if he is not dealt with."
Veldoran calls to them, "Max is already a threat to us and anything of the warp. We can not be at each other. For now, we must find a new planet to settle on. The tau are looking for a new planet too, but we must be quicker than they are."
Shelia agrees, "Yes, it is better to find a new planet for now. We can worry of Max later on. For now, our scans have found a few planets to take for ourselves. If we are lucky, things will be better for us. As for anything else, we can discuss it later."
Xiwe agrees and leaves the room to another part of the ship with her kin. Veldoran follows her and leaves Kayleth and Shelia alone. It is nothing but silence throughout the ship as the eldar move to find a new home. Kayleth mediates on the affairs of today; she still can't believe how bad things are going. Shelia speaks with her about the what just happen.
She says, "Do you know why Xiwe wanted Max dead?"
Kayleth replies, "Her reasons for wanting him dead are understandable, but this is no time for worthless battle when the enemy is around and waiting."
Shelia presses the question again and receives a new answer. Kayleth continues, "She keeps seeing Max as the threat to both craft worlds and not as a valued ally against the enemy. I would have killed him long ago before we came here; however, the future changed for us all. He is not the enemy despite how events went between us. Even now, we stand a better chance in this galaxy against the Sons of Malice and the orks if we keep the alliance between us."
Shelia laughs and spins above her head with a jump, "You mean that you do not wish to see Max killed before you confess to him your one true feeling. Is that not why you have not killed him yet?"
Kayleth ignores her words with the objective on her mind. Shelia laughs and disappears from her. Once she is alone, Kayleth finds her mind drifting back to him. The rage is strong and his voice is threatening. "Leave now and do not come back". Those were the words he told her. They didn't sting as much as she believed them, but it brings her heart low. But, she will not let emotions get her down. Her main concern is keep both eldar parties alive and finding a world for them. The task woud be difficult and lonely, but survival is more important than ever. Back on Xoen, the imperial army found two areas worthy of setting up a new fortress. Though efforts to start are great in numbers, Max continues to oversee some of the construction for how they should be set up.
He says, "This structure needs to have at least six to seven towers for communications like all the others. If we are going to keep each other up to date on any attacks, then we must be ready for them. There can be no shortage of weapons, tanks, armor, or turrets. Make sure all these plans are sent to every tech teams and construction teams. Also, I want at least each settlement to be fully capable of housing over one million people. Once that is done, a few areas will be used for farming. For now, you have your orders. May the Emperor protect you."
As they leave out in waves of explorers, solders, tech-experts, scouts, hunters, and citizens, Max stands proud of what he sees and believes. He goes inside the front command base and speaks with Elara about the troop morale.
She says, "The morale of the guardsmen is at an all time high. I've never seen so much joy and duty in their eyes as they march out to serve for the imperium. Carl is glad to lead them through any danger as long as he finds any challenge waiting for him. I hope the temptation does not lead him into failure."
Max replies, "Carl will be fine. He made it this far and still stands for the imperium. You and Carl keep advancing the troops and setting up the settlements. I'll be checking with Lina and see what she has learned from the tome. This world may be ours, but it will always be our home to share some forbidden technology if we need it to gain an advantage.
Commissar Elara continues to monitor the screens and Max takes his leave to visit Lina. It is a glorious time to expand further out and shape the planet into a proper imperial world. Many people wonder if the Emperor would accept the new version of the imperium guided by Max; it will be a challegne to maintain what they were taught and know of the imperial rule. As more people set out into the wild, Max finds his thoughts looking back on what he has done for the people that now look to him. He commands with the authority of an imperial leader and continues to lead and spread the influence across the stars. It is awe inspiring yet all frightening for him. He would not let down the Emperor even as a blank. More importantly, he would not let his brother-in-arms down either.
He arrives at the technology area to see everyone feeling good and doing great. The study of the new upgrades to the ship, the fortress, and the gear amazes everyone. The weapons are stronger than others. Each las-rifle can now go through most targets depending on the enemy. Most tanks and armored transports are now stronger than before and able to take more damage. With the new and improved fighting power of the imperial army, the orks would now face more than just the emperor's wrath. Any enemy would be fighting against the fury of man. Every tech person and tech priest give praise to the Omnissiah for what they have completed. Max arrives at Lina's location and looks at her go to work with the people around her. From the studying to the dealings of the tech, every word she says has the people more than eager and ready to do more for themselves.
Max comes to her, "Hey, how are things going? You seem to be doing more than what you should be doing. Is there anything going on that has you this excited?"
Lina passes on a message and turns to him, "Well, since the study of the landscape has made things better for us, we have been able to recover more resources for the army and the base. It has not been easy; however, we can adapt to the situation. Xoen will be an imperial world worthy of the Emperor. If not, we will make it home and keep the old ways of the imperial guard going. We may be lost in this galaxy, but we are finding our way. But for now, there is something in the tome I want your opinion on."
They leave the area and enter the private chambers. Within the private chambers, Lina did her best work here. Max notices a few changes around the room, but there was less inside. At the back of the room, there it was. The tome is resting on the podium and open like any other book. They approach it and see the instructions.
She says, "Now, the tome is easy for anyone to read and study. It took some time for me to get everything in order, but the surprising parts is what I discovered. We can make armor similiar to the space marines, but now I have a real chance to enhance anyone if their body can endure the pain and upgrades. The good news is now we can fix it to where we can live an extra twenty-eight years long after we reach the age of eighty. It may be able to expand it longer if I get the details right. But, it sounds so tainted as though..."
He stops her and replies, "You won't make any of us tainted. The best thing you can do with this is give us more than advantage. You might even turn this into a blessing we didn't see coming. If you want, I can get a few people to agree to this new process and see what happens. We will start with only twenty people and see how it goes for us. I will even join."
Lina leans back and thinks long about how this can go. She didn't know if this will work or if it will bring more harm to others. As the two continue to study and observe, Carl and a few troops enjoy the journey out into the land. They mark a new location for the next settlement to begin. They are happy beyond words and careful of the surrounding. He reports back to Elara and lets her know what needs to come out here first.
Carl thought, "This is what humanity must have felt like when they started their journey under the Emperor's guidance. I truly can see this world becoming great within years. It will take time and effort; however, we shall make this into an imperial world worthy of more than praise."
Before they can advance any further, there are noises heard from their left side of the area. To their surprise, the kroot packs are emerging from the trees. Carl and his followers look on at them; they feast on a random animal with delight as blood covers their jaw. From behind their back, Suu and her pathfinders step forward. She keeps her mind focus on the exploration. Carl welcomes them to their next settlement; Suu orders her teams to set up while she looks out into the landscape. It was a beautiful view and Carl joins her. He keeps his distance from and observes the next path they must take. He looks over to see a river bed not too far from where he stands. Carl scans the next zone and finds a rock formation. Before he can let the scouts know where to go, Suu taps his shoulder.
He turns to her and Suu says, "If you are going to expand anywhere, your best choice will be the river bed. It would seem wise for your future."
Carl smirks and replies, "I already had that area in mind. The rock formation would be nice for a defensive area; however, I prefer water to be near a new settlement. It will keep morale high and make things easier for us to get what we need. For now, we will go that way after the troops rest up some more."
He turns back and looks at his soldiers. They are all doing well and socializing with the tau and kroot; the orks threat still is high and the Sons of Malice can strike from anywhere. But right now, there is harmony among the xeno and humans. Carl turns to see Suu haooy that everyone is getting along, but she keeps her eyes looking elsewhere. In moments, Carl orders his troops to be ready to move out; Suu orders her troops to be ready soon. They would journey to the rock formation as a whole unit. The air isn't hot and the cool breeze makes everything easy to endure. As the fire warriors and imperial guard march to the location, Carl and Suu stand on uneven terms.
He says, "I want you to know that I didn't mean to put you in any troubling situation. I just really thought that something happen between us. For what it is worth, I never meant to upset you."
Suu sighs and replies, "I completely understand what you meant. You thought it important to let our leaders know of our private affair. I am not mad, but I am more curious as to why you believed they needed to know. Or, did you really think that I allowed you to.."
Carl cuts her off and says, "That didn't happen. Even if I really wanted to try anything with you..wait, that is not what I meant."
She laughs at his foolish behavior, "I highly doubt would want to ensure the survival of your family line. I would welcome it if you were not so quick to keep your imperial codex in mind when they tau has so much to offer."
He looks back to see that the troops are further away from them. Carl asks, "Ok, let us really get this out in the open between us. Did you want something to happen between?"
Chapter 8: Section 8 - 3
The question is asked. Every thought swirls to the idea despite what belief is held in high regard. The pulse is steady, but it can go faster with the right time. She turns to him with eyes of curiousity. He looks into her eyes and sees a small hint being called to him. It is time to let him know the purpose of her desire. She breathes easy and moves to him. As everyone else looks around and studies the surrounding away from them, they have time to finally say what must be said. Suu steps to Carl and grabs his hand. He raises an eyebrow and wonders what is going to be said next.
Suu says, "I told you who I am. You know what my desire is. I only want to know who you are. Who are you, Carl of the Imperial Guardian?"
Carl answers, "You asked me that question before. I see you still want an answer. I will give you an answer and hope it clears up everything."
He continues, "I am Carl of the Imperial Guardians for the Emperor of Mankind. I have to fulfill his vision of seeing humanity take its place at the head of the galaxy with all other species either pushed from the galaxy or purged from our home worlds. The forces of Chaos must be eliminated and the Dark Gods must perish. The orks must be obliterated and wiped clean from every corner of the universe. Every necron tomb world must be reduce to ash and dust. All tyranids must be burned in holy fire. Only xeno like yourself and the eldar may find save refuge in the stars among galaxies such as this. You may even escape our might if all others don't destroy you. This is who I am. So, who are you suppose to be to me other than another future problem?"
She steps to him with hopeful eyes and smiles, "I represent all that you need in your life and to continue a legacy as great as yours can be. I am Suu of the Tau Empire that fights for the Greater Good. We would welcome your kind into our life and empire; however, you seek to try and destroy all as though your rule is right. You believe your rules, empire, and might make everything so easy to live by when everything has soulless beings, mad humans, and twisted individuals among even your great champions. I seek a galaxy ruled by a simple belief and logic. The real question for you still stands as of now. Tell me who you are, Carl of the imperial army. I want to know who you truly are than what you represent to humanity."
Suu touches his arm and slides a finger over his chest. Carl nearly feels drawn towards her, but he remains strong and proud. A fire warrior and soldier comes to them both. The updates of the next settlement is ready for more to start a life here. Though the tau have not laid down any places, they are happy to continue helping the imperium. Once done, a report comes to them from their leaders.
Shas'O Kias reportsto Suu: "I have good news for us. Return at once, Shas'El. Asuki is in route and Aun El Rai is ready to deliever the news."
Max reports to Carl: "There is some news for us and now we may have an advantage. I need you back here asap."
With their orders heard, Carl and Suu nod their head in agreement. Carl didn't take his eyes off of Suu and ends up falling over a rock. She looks at him and laughs. He stands up to dust off the dirt.
Before she parts from him, Suu gives him one more smile and says, "You may never believe in the greater good, but I hope you will accept the future waiting for us."
Carl tries to ask her meaning, but Suu orders her troops to return back to the Tau fortress. After finishing up the area, the imperial army returns back to their base. It is time for the news to be heard from their leaders. After traveling back to the base by transport, Carl radios to Max that he will be at the technology area soon. Commissar Elara gives the troops as many tasks to do as she attends to the gathering. Within thirty minutes, they all stand present. Max is at the head of the table. Lina and Carl stand at his side. Elara keeps a watchful eye out for any of those looking to be foolish. The captains and officers all stand ready to hear the news.
Max says, "I have good news for us all. Since the exploration, we have found four zones to settle in with only one more left to discover. Thanks to your efforts, the imperium of man shall thrive on Xoen and turn the Primarex system into a home worthy of the Emperor. This achievement is about you more than it is about me ruling over you. You did this for us and the future that is to come for us. So, enjoy this moment and now, I give the floor to Lina. The Blessed Techno Woman has more news for us. It may be the key to turning the battle into our favor."
Lina steps forward and says, "The tome we recovered from the cave has given me more than just new ways to keep enhancing the armor, weapons, and tanks for war. The tome was from a tech marine who left it sealed for anyone to find it. I am glad that we were fortunate to find such a thing before it fell into wrong hands. After carefully going through the pages of the tome, I have discovered more than just a blue print for the imperial army to have. The tome contain small sections of body enhancements for us to include into our life and not courrpt us to the side of chaos. We are able to change our war tactics and alter ourselves in ways similiar to a defenders of mankind. Once the tech priests and I apply this method to our life, we shall be what the enemy didn't expect us to be."
As happy as she sounds, Lina didn't give them a fair answer. Carl adds, "Are you saying that this tome has secrets from a space marine chapter?"
She smirks and answers, "I really wish it did, but there are only blue prints for us to upgrade ourselves to be similiar to them. I only modified it for us to be as strong as their scouts. We may be able to take more pain and live longer, but we are still human with nothing else taken from us to be better. I need at least twenty people to endure the painful upgrade. If all goes well, I will keep this method within the tome for future leaders. I only need twenty people that want this."
The captains and officers stand unsure yet glad for the news.
One officer points to Lina and says, "This is madness. You may have found a way, but what makes you so certain that the design will be able to fit us. How can we accept this new method from you without being corrupt?"
Before she can reply, Carl answers, "You stand here and doubt the words of the Blessed Techno Woman? After all the blood shed and painful hours, you would dare question her words on making something that can improve us? You are unfit to call yourself an officer of the imperial guard. I trust her words and how she does things. This tome may hold several ways for us to be better than we were before. You are unworthy to be a candidate for this process, so I will expect you to report back to your post."
The answer causes the officer to nearly reach for his gun, but Elara steps forward holding her bolter in hand. The man lowers his tone and holds his tongue.
A female captain asks, "Even if this method works for us, we still barely stand any chances against the Sons of Malice and the orks. This upgrade is nothing more than a pointless attempt to be something we are not meant to do. I see this as a waste of time, resources, and effort. We do not need any additional help if this is only a minor upgrade."
Elara laughs proudly at the woman and replies, "Do you know what an advantage is? Let me help you understand the word. An advantage means to be put in a favorable situation or position; it also means that you have a chance to make anything small into a opportunity for yourself. I see you are unfamiliar with the advantage you can have over any enemy even when it is a small one. Right now, I would kill you for your lack of duty as the Emperor commands it; in fact, your death may not have so many soldiers question what our tech teams do for us. Instead, I will let you live on as an example to us all when one is incapable of aspiring to be something great."
The captain roars at Elara. Max smiles and steps forward to quiet the room. Everyone looks to him and waits for his words.
He says, "I need only twenty people who are ready to undergo the process our Techno Woman has for us. I shall be one of the candidates for this. Now, I need only nineteen more. Who among you are ready to endure this with me?"
Everyone is surprised; Max Johnson is willing to place his own life in her hands to be stronger than ever. No one else agrees to join save only two captains and three officers. Now, there is only fourteen that need to join them. The other captains and officers put the word out to everyone about the process. Nearly everyone wants a chance to be as strong as a space marine or close to being one. Max agrees to oversee and pick those that will be candidates for this method. As Carl and Elara continue to keep everything managed, there is greater news at the Tau fortress. High in the tower, they all stand together. Aun El Rai, Shas'O Kais, Asuki and Suu stand on their legs in high spirit. They didn't think this was possible, but it is right in front of their faces.
It blinks with a soft pace; the readings are at eighty-five percent accurate. This is everything they had hope for and more. It is a planet that can support live in every way possible. Aun El Rai calls it more than just a vision and blessing. He lets his voice ring loudly over the broadcast to everyone within the tau empire. He takes to the com channel and lets his words reach the ears of everyone:
Aun El Rai announces, "Soldiers and citizens of the tau empire. The time has come for us to finally leave the planet of Xoen to the Imperium. We have found a planet that will be home for the tau empire to grow from. We will still be within range of the Primarex system; however, our galaxy shall be the home that all species can thrive from. Let us make ourselves ready and go to our new home. The Greater Good will thrive here and we will be win."
As everyone gives praise for their new home, the leaders realize that the news must be given to the others. They make their way over to the imperial fortress for their last time fighting and living together. After enough time goes by, they all stand together in the main hall of the imperial fortress. It is barely the afternoon as the sun goes near the horizon. Max, Lina, and Carl stand face to face with Shas'O Kais, Aun El Rai, and Suu. Though Asuki and Elara are not present, the duo continue to keep everything going accordingly. Elara makes sure that the last few candidates for Lina are sure they want to go through with the process. Asuki keeps the citizens ready to as they make sure everything is packed.
Max shakes El Rai's hand and says, "It was good that we fought together, and I am glad you found a home. How did you find the planet?"
Aun El Rai smiles and replies, "We sent out many of our probes across the Primarex system. It turns out this system is larger than we knew. Once we received a blip on the monitor, I ordered a team to travel out there and see what condition the planet was in. That same team reported to us within a few hours and sent us clear readings. They are still on the planet doing recon, but it is showing them promise. We must hurry and take the planet ourselves before your other friends get any ideas."
Lina interrupts, "The eldar are no longer on our world nor in the system. Max has declared them excommunicatus from this world and system. I only hope they found a home such as we have. For now, we are going to upgrade twenty people for a project of mines. If all goes well, we can take the fight to the enemy better than ever."
Shas'O Kais agrees and adds, "It is better that the eldar are no longer in any of our affairs. Once we establish a proper base on the new world, we can continue our own research and make sure nothing will come ot us. If all goes well, I hope you are willing to continue to trade with us."
Carl and Suu stay away from each other. Only Max notices this unusual behavior.
He asks, "Hey Carl. Your tau fire warrior friend is no longer going to be here. Do you have anything you want to let her know before she is gone?"
He looks at her and stares into her eyes. Carl says, "There is nothing else for me to say to her. I only wish her glory and happiness for her empire. If all goes well, she will be the new face to command the tau army like Shas'O Kais."
Lina and Max notice the attitude of Carl. They dismiss it only to see El Rai and Kais turn to Suu.
El Rai says, "I think this is the best time for you to tell him about it now. I would hate for him to be caught unprotected again."
Shas'O Kais agrees to the method. Lina, Max, and Carl wonder what else is there for to tell. Suu looks at Carl with nervous eyes and breathes slightly hard. She walks over to him and all eyes fall on them. Carl is at a loss for words.
She says, "I was going to never tell you about it, but I don't want to lie or keep anything from you. It is for not just my own greater good, but yours as well."
Carl asks, "What do you mean 'My greater good' and why are you close to me?"
Suu takes Carl by his hands and guides them to her stomach. She opens his palms and rubs them on her. To everyone's surprise, Carl's eyes widen with shock and rage. He pulls out his flaming sword to strike her down only for Max to hold him back. Suu backs off while Kais steps forward. The mood of the room is now full of hate, shock, rage, and interest. After Max lets him go, Lina looks at him with interest more than ever.
She asks, "When did you decide to...or how did you do it?"
Carl looks at everyone as he contains his anger, "I did nothing with her. Only thing she ever did was kiss me. I swear by the Golden Throne that I didn't do anything with her of that nature. But, how and when did this happen?"
El Rai, Max, and Kais look to Suu as she blushes. The mystery behind it is about to be revealed.
Chapter 8: Section 8 - 4
The questions come to everyone as a surprise. Not many people are able to conceive a being between two species of different origins and biology. Though questions are on everyone's mind, only one person among them is full of rage and wrath. Carl stands before everyone looking at Suu with his unanswered questions adding more fuel to the fire.
He asks her again, "When did you have time to conceive a child from me? How do I even know it is mine?"
Everyone turns to Suu and she answers, "Well, the first time we met, I didn't know or think you would be good for me. As time went on, I realized that you would be a great addition to the Tau empire; however, you still keep yourself strong with imperial customs. So, I went to one of the tech experts during my spare time. They created for me a device on my finger tips to study and analyze your genetic being and biology. Every time I touched you, I was gathering data. The last bit of information I needed from you was your blood. After you consumed too much wine, it was easy. I was not going to tell you, but I don't want you to compare me to the eldar."
Carl thought back to every time she was close and touching him. Each moment was to gather DNA from his body through contact. He holds in anger in and calms his hatred; Carl realized that this was not his fault. With nothing else left to say, he leaves out the room and gives her a firm warning.
He says, "If you care about our alliance, get off of Xoen and do not speak to me any more. I would kill you, but I remember what Noble One told us. I will be elsewhere if you need me."
After he leaves, Suu tries to follow him out only for Max to stop her. He begs Suu to not follow him. As Aun El Rai and Shas'O Kais leave, Lina questions Suu about the results before she can go.
Lina asks, "Before you make your journey to your new world, I have to ask you. Are you certain there is a child on the way between you two? I ask because I was studying your biology and didn't see anything that gives off signs of you being with a child."
Suu blushes again and replies, "It is still early to tell, but I wanted to tell him as soon as I was made into a Shas'El. I am still receiving test results over the blood he gave. I just wanted him to know that his blood line can survive and be apart of something as great as the tau empire."
Lina laughs at the answer and says, "Out of all the stuff I have seen within this regiment, you did the one thing Max tried to do with Kayleth. Shame, Carl beat him to it. More importantly, good luck on your journey to the new home and do let me know if you are successful. I only ask for the results since this is a new discovery for us."
After everyone returns to their duty, Max goes to find Carl. He sees him issuing out orders and annoyed with what has happen.
Max says, "You look as though you are more than just upset. Did the news hit you that hard, or was it because you didn't know?"
Carl sighs heavily and turns to him, "I am a proud guardian of the imperial forces. My mission is to eliminate any hostile xeno life and destroy the forces of chaos. I didn't travel through dark space and the warp to come into a new galaxy with any child. The last thing I need to know and see is some xeno child born from my blood. I came here to help you expand the imperium of man. How can I look into the eyes of the emperor, knowing I have this problem?"
To his question and annoyance, Max replies, "Look, this isn't something you saw coming and I know you wouldn't want to have it. The only thing you can remember is your duty and not think of what has yet to happen. If that day comes, you will either do your duty for the emperor when it is time or you won't. I am not here to judge you for anything you do or didn't know of. For now, the tau are leaving this world and going to find their own. Once we have found peace in this system, we can focus on the alliance afterwards. You have nothing to worry about. We have more pressing matters than a xeno hybrid to deal with."
As much as Carl wants to scream and slap Suu, he ignores what has yet to happen. He agrees with Max and keeps his mind focus on the future settlements for the imperium. After they arrive back at the tau fortress, everything is nearly ready. By night fall, no piece of tau technology and building will be present on Xoen. Aun El Rai and Shas'O Kais are anxious to see this world for them and keep everyone motivated for the journey. Asuki rallies and spreads the word to all tau species that the Greater Good will prevail. Only Suu finds herself sad and unable to enjoy what is coming to her.
Suu thought, "I only wanted him to be happy with the knowledge of his family line being stronger than ever. I hope with time that he will be better and forget about this. I hope everything works out for him."
Back at the imperial fortress, the twenty candidates step forward for Lina to see. At the front of them, Max Johnson stands ready and anxious to see what this will do. Lina is positive that this will benefit all the soldiers of the imperial guard and the imperial guardians. Without further ado, Lina explains to them how the procedure would go.
She says, "The first part will be the injection of the muscles and bone. The bone injections will hurt a lot more than the muscles. After that, you will be placed inside the containers for the next part of the method. I will be monitoring your heart rate and adding additional organs to your body. Many of you will be having synthetic organs or additional ones to help you endure the pain. My team and I will do all that we can to make this as painless as possible. Be aware, this is my first attempt at this. I won't allow any of you to die on me. You can count on me."
The soldiers cry, "For the imperium, we give our life! For the Emperor, we give our soul! Long live the imperium of humanity! We die with no regrets!"
As the soldiers start going to their medic for the injections, Max steps to Lina. She prays to the Omnissiah that all will go well. Max assures her that nothing will go wrong. He believes that nothing will happen to them and they shall have the best of the best for their journey.
He says, "Remember, you got this. I trust you completely. I may be a blank and cause a lot of problems. But, this will make me more stable than ever. The Emperor is with us as much as the Omnissiah is with us. So, you can do this."
Max lays down and Lina says, "You better not die on me during this. I want you back with us."
He gives her a thumbs up and the process starts. Every medic and operator follows her method for this dangerous procedure. Every candidate is strap down to the table. A single syringe comes up and pokes them in the shoulder. Every soldier and Max feels their skin itch on the inside and passes over their body. The muscles itch greatly, but they can't move to scratch them. After five minutes of waiting, the second needles come up. They are slightly longer than the last set. The tables raise everyone up and flips over to the other side. Max and every soldier feels a strong pinch in their spine. Many soldiers scream and groan from the pain. They all feel the bone slightly pop as the needles inject the next serum inside tthem. Lina looks at the monitors and sees all of them are holding. A few go into the red due to the painful experience. After five minutes go by, the soldiers and Max are placed inside the human pods. Once inside, the doors close and more needles pierce their body from within the pods. The hard part is coming and a surprise comes to everyone. The cold void comes to all present and sweeps over the land. They all can feel it; they know it won't be easy to endure. Everyone stands ready and anxious to see how this would be for Max.
As the tau continue to pack up and start the Great Spear, they feel the void come to them. Many want to know what is going on, but they agree to continue with the evacuation. None didn't know what they felt a cold void from the imperial fortress. Aun El Rai and Shas'O Kais encourage all to hurry and make haste to see the new world that awaits them. Once the needles are done injecting into the bodies of the twenty people, the human pods are hooked up to two large tubes. One tube pumps oxygen inside the pod. The other allows for any bodily fluids to escape from the pod. It would be some time before they can add on the extra parts for them. Lina looks over the stats of everyone; the readings are good. She thinks over how this will go when they have to open the pods again for the next part of the surgery. Lina and the medics gather the supplies to stop the bleeding and more medicine. The operators brings over the bone saws and metal to adjust the body.
Lina thought, "Great Omnissiah, please give me the knowledge. I may have only worked on machines, but I need your guidance for their sake. Do not let anyone die on these operators."
The twenty minutes is over, but some have to wait for thirty minutes. The real challenge is upon them. After Lina looks at everyone, she sees them asleep and resting easy. Every soldier and Max are relaxed; none are in the red. Lina alerts the operators and medics that it is time to begin. As the human pods open, the body temperature is kept below subzero. Everything is ready and the tables are brought over. Now, it is time to add the syntheitc organs and parts needed. Many require additional organs and some need their blood to change. As they endure the bodily change, others stand by and pray to the Emperor that everyone will survive. The bone saw cuts away at the body that needs to be altered. They remove organs and replace certain ones with syntheitc ones that enhance the blood. The process is dangerous and they make sure to test each part before slicing away at someone. Time goes on and no one is certain any more once the procedure is done. After hours go by, the human pods are closed and everyone lets the rest be done through the blessing of advanced healing. Lina is amazed by how much work she put into helping the operators perform. Only time will tell and now the moment is upon them. All they can do is wait.
Time itself is long and painful. The hours pass by and the night time is coming to them. It is peaceful on Xoen as many turn their eyes to the sky to see their xeno allies leave. Many of them enjoyed the time spent with the kroot and fire warriors. They have learned how wonderful the tau are. Though the Greater Good concept is good to learn of, the majority of imperial soldiers remember that the emperor protects all of those that remain faithful. Lina, Carl, and Elara stand by a console and receive the last message from Aun El Rai. He seems sad as he gives them his last words.
He says, "I have enjoyed our time together, and I don't wish for it to end. I hope there is more opportunity for us to work together. Surely, the tau has something to offer you?"
Elara replies, "We appreciate your time with us; however, we have our own duty to perform. You make good allies, but we shall always be true to the Emperor of Mankind. Keep your com channels open if and when you do decide to come here."
Carl adds, "Do what you must to secure your own world and we shall do the Emperor's work in his name. Farewell and fly safe."
Aun El Rai ends the broadcast and leaves to guide his people. Lina and Elara are impressed with the manner Carl conducts himself.
Lina says, "It is good that you didn't allow your emotions to over come you. Max will be glad to hear this once he and the others wake up."
Carl scoffs at the notion, "Max will lead the imperial army to glory. I will remain at his side to help him crush the Sons of Malice. There is nothing that will turn me away from my duty. The tau forces will be dealt with when it is time. So, they better make their home as strong as it is. We will end their reign and usher in the new age."
Chapter 8: Section 8 - 5
As Carl walks away, Lina and Elara continue to do what they can to maintain the base. It is not an easy task with Max enduring the upgrade for himself and others. Lina assists the tech teams and tech priests where she can. Elara keeps the troops alert and well discipline. As they wait for the healing to be complete, they pray all will be well for them. Elsewhere, the eldar finally discover a world fitting for them. As a few ships are sent down to explore the landscape, it is a discovery beyond words. The Faded Light moves pass the atmosphere. Xiwe, Veldoran, Shelia, and Kayleth view the world from one of the monitors. It is impressive and beautiful. The ship touches down on the surface; everything feels different here. The world is full of warp energy, but it is clear and pure. Xiwe teleports to the surface and places her palm on the surface. She can feel the world pulse and call to her. It is wonderful and full of life.
Xiwe says, "This planet is perfect for us. It is in need of proper care, but it can flourish. I am surprise the warp here is strong."
Veldoran and Kayleth are impressed that a planet full of the warp is resting here.
Shelia twists and guides her hand through the air, "This world is nearly twenty years from Xoen. It is a good thing we found it before the humans did. I wonder why they didn't sense this world. Do you think they still know of our hidden web way portal?"
Veldoran replies, "How can they know of it? It is well hidden aboard the War Harbinger in a safe spot. I'm surprise that Lina has not found it yet. We shall have to retrieve it soon before they do discover it. I do recall it kept a few spirit stones inside it."
Kayleth walks around the surface and smiles at what the planet offers. It is a time for more than just personal growth. Here is where the eldar will build back up what they have lost.
She says, "This world will be all that we need. We are only twenty years from Xoen. It is a blink of an eye for us. The humans will be unable to find us if we can conceal our world from them."
As the eldar appear on the surface, an impressive feature catches the eyes of them. There are pockets of the warp holding strong in front of them. Kayleth goes to one of them and touches it. It is pure and safe. She smiles and decides to test how pure this pocket of warp energy is. The empty spirit stones gather energy within them. Xiwe likes what she sees and opens a small portal beside her. She takes out a small spirit stone from the craft world. Veldoran, Kayleth, and Shelia watch her place the stone within the warp pocket. In minutes, the spirit stone restores a single eldar to life and allows them to step forward.
The eldar warrior says, "I am whole once more and ready to offer my life to you."
Xiwe orders for the rest of the spirit stones to be brought here. Veldoran and Shelia smile at the discovery and see their kind returning to life. Though many are brought to them, the rest are still hidden safely aboard the War Harbinger.
Kayleth says, "I'll have to return to Xoen to recover the rest of the stones. When we passed through the warp to come here, we hidden the small web way portal aboard the ship before we jumped. I shall go and bring them back."
Xiwe disagrees and says, "You are foolish to go alone. I shall accompany you in case he stops you. He is still a threat to us."
Veldoran asks, "Are you sure going with her is a wise decision? I do recall strong issues are not resolved between you two."
Kayleth answers, "We will settle our issues when we return back here. This shall be our home for both craft world Ctho and Alaitoc. Once we recover the last web way portal from Xoen, we shall begin to revive all our fallen kin."
Xiwe agrees as two bone-singers create a shuttle for them to travel on. Though the mission would be an easy snatch and go task, Xiwe makes sure some of the Ctho scouts are going with them. Once the shuttle is made, they climb aboard. The shuttle is only large enough to carry three squads and secure the hidden web way portal. Though the mission can easily be done, Xiwe requires that more eldar come if the humans engage them. The shuttle takes to the sky and bolts for Xoen. As the eldar make themselves comfy for the trip, Kayleth approaches Xiwe and keeps their chat private through telepathic thought.
Kayleth says, "You didn't need to bring them with us. We could have easily slipped in and got the web way portal with no trouble. Only you, myself, and two bone singers are needed for this task."
Xiwe replies, "If I could trust you to do the job, then this would not be an issue. Your mon-keigh partner may try to stop us and destroy what is left of your craft world. I rather not see your fail poorly so we shall only engage if they get in the way."
The journey would take them one day to reach Xoen. For now, Kayleth keeps her mind silent and mediates on what they will hopefully not encounter. Even before leaving and returning back to Xoen, Kayleth didn't understand what Xiwe sees as far as the future shows her. And now that Max has made the eldar as their enemies, things would only become harder.
Kayleth thought, "This is not the proper path we should be taking. I only hope there will be no incidents between our mission and Max."
As the eldar wait, there are more interesting things back on Xoen. It is barely morning as the sound of alarms alert Lina. She wakes up from a deep slumber and sees an alert with the human pods. Though everyone else doesn't wake up until much later, she dresses herself and hurries over to the human pods. She arrives to see that the time is over for all of them. Lina presses her emergency alert button to get others involved; the task is over. It is time to let them all out. Only six of them are showing yellow and red. As the others come over from their home, Lina goes to the first one. She is excited and ready to see what has become of the men and women within the pods. She presses a button at the first pod and the air within escapes.
He wakes up and feels almost sick to his stomach. The hand pushes open the pod with quickness and forces her to move back quickly. There are no more needles sticking him. The vision is blurry and the ears feel muffled. He falls over from trying to stand up too quickly; the air fills his lungs thought he didn't expect it to smell clearer than ever. The sun is slowly coming over the horizon and shines in his face. He yells at how his sight is feeling. Now, two hands grab and try to restrain him. He nearly throws them back only to hear the voice. She is concern and caring. He looks over to see her.
Lina says, "It is alright. Calm yourself and take a moment. You just came out of the pod. It will take time for you to adjust, but things look ok. You didn't lose any organs or body parts. Take it slow and give yourself time to recover, Max."
Max looks at his hands to see them fine. He feels stronger and slightly taller. Suddenly, his blank powers stretch out and catch everyone off guard. The cold void feeling from him spreads from where he stands and goes out into the land. It is strong and frightening. Lina and those nearby back up quickly. People within the imperial fortress feel it and look from where it is coming. Max calms his nerves and slows his breathing. Upon adjusting himself, he looks out into the land and sees that everyone is present. Many more rush to see him. Before he knew it, they were kneeling and giving a praise to Max.
He says, "Lina, why are these people doing this? I am no saint."
She orders for a large mirror to be brought over and replies, "The enhancements I gave you caused more than just some growth to your body. Your size increased by a few more inches or a single foot. Based on the readings, your life span is going to be longer than others. I don't have much else for now. After you and the others are adjusted, the physical testing will begin. For now, you look as though you are a space marine. Or, maybe you are the blessing that we need."
Max looks to see more people arrive and kneel before him. He takes a moment to make sure he is properly dressed. The clothes he has on expand to his size. He moves for them and shouts for them all to hear his words.
Max says, "All of you rise up and stand on your feet. I am not here to receive your worship. Do not look to me as a God, a space marine, nor as a Primarch. I am unworthy of such things. I stand before you all as any other man would. The only being worthy of praise and worship was the Emperor. I want you all to stand with me and be here to help me usher in a new imperium for this galaxy to receive. Will you all follow me into paradise again?"
The people and soldiers stand high on their feet and give their praise to Max. Though still weak from the experiment, Max is proud and happy to hear from everyone. He orders them to go about their day. Among them, he finds Carl and Elara glad to see he is well.
Carl says, "Looks like I should've joined the program too, but I will be fine as I am now. I do bring you good news about the settlments. The last one has been found and the first one reports the discovery of iron. So, we are doing well and making things better than before. The first settlment will be able to house at least five-hundred thousand residents. The second one is still going through some changes, but it is holding the most troops for them to practice and train. The third settlement is gather resources for us and sending them out everywhere they can go. For now, there is nothing else to report."
Commissar Elara salutes Max and withholds her private thoughts on how Max looks, "I have the reports from the captians and officers. Each guardsmen unit is performing well doing better than ever. They are good at center and highly positive at the front lines. I didn't expect them to be so bold to take on any task. They keep trying to push further and further out into the world. A few wild animals and beasts were encountered, but they prove no challenge for them. I hope there are some more orks out there for us to fight against. And, that is all."
She takes her leave quickly only to think, "Max is looking more alluring than ever. I wonder if he has picked anyone?"
Carl and Lina look over the other reports of the candidates. It is amazing to see everyone live. The only issue was a few of them had issues. One person couldn't move his arm and another is crippled from the injection. A man is blind and more syntheitc organs are needed for the next person. Lina sighs at her upgrades, but Max assures her that she did what she could to help. Overall, only three of them suffer from the process, but the others stand stronger than before.
Max says, "You may want to add everything to the tome as soon as you can. For now, seventeen people coming out from this has been a blessing to the Omnissiah and the Emperor. You did it, Lina. And future generations are going to need to study your work. For now, do what you can to help the others and make them better than what they were before. As for the others, I'll lead them and make sure all reports of our phyiscal test are sent to you for records."
After enough time passes, the others gather with Max and feel their body is stronger than ever. Max orders them to follow him to an open area to start their phyiscal training and testing. The first time is simple; they would run for a mile to see how long they can last. They all complete a mile run within less than ten minutes. They feel great. Now, they run for two miles out and back. They finish it just as quick as ever. Max and the test watchers are impressed. They didn't expect anyone to move that fast. They test their strength and lift some chopped pieces of wood. Each soldier holds up to five hundred pounds of wood with ease. They throw a single piece well over fifty yards. Max and the soldiers feel great; the enhancements to them are great and better.
As time goes on, Max and the others are now ready to see how well they would do against each other in combat. The show is quite a spectacular sight. They gather in the center of the fortress and make the field an entire battle ground for testing. The others that can't be there are able to see the fight from a vid channel. Everyone stands excited and ready to see what happen. The first fight is between two men. They move faster than every and watch how hard they hit each other. A lot of people clap and enjoy the brawl, but the majority are wordless for how fast the fighters move. Each fight results with more data for Lina and her staff to catalog. Now, Max is eager to see how he would do. He steps onto the field and smirks at the crowd. Nearly everyone hushes their words and waits to see who will he fight.
Max looks on to see too many afraid to challenge him. He shouts, "I may be your leader, but I demand a challenge from you. Do not hold back because of me. I ask among you. Who challenges me?"
A new voice says, "I will be your fighter. I want to see how strong you are."
Everyone looks above to see the farseer Xiwe stand on a tall place. Lina sends a few agents to check the landscape for any sign of eldar attackers. Max nearly scoffs at her and ignores her words. Xiwe surprises everyone by landing in front of Max. Before any soldier can fire a las-rifle at her, Max orders the people to back up and give them as much space as they can.
Xiwe looks around her to see everyone move back, "You really believe you stand a chance against me? Your enhancements may help you, but I doubt you will last against me. I underestimated you before. That won't happen again."
Max hears Lina call to him. She says, "While you were asleep, I used this time to make you this. It will help you in battle and hopefully, you will like it."
Two soldiers bring Max a massive sledge hammer. Though it looks ordinary, he takes it and watches the magic happen. Within the metal itself is energy that screams with power. Max smiles at his chances, but Xiwe nearly laughs at how foolish he will look once he is defeat.
The battle on Xoen is heating up and many things will happen here. Max and Xiwe will fight to see if he is stronger than ever. Not too far from the battle field high on the building, Kayleth looks on and hopes for a swift victory.
Kayleth says, "I hope you are victorious here."
Within the crowd and keeping herself hidden, the silent woman looks on and watches with interest and wonders who will be the victor.
She thought, "He is stronger than before. Now is the perfect time for him to strike her down and eliminate her. Will he serve our cause, or will he be the death of us all?"
It is time for the ultimate test.
