Stolas was stuck in that mental state between curious and worried.
Not a good combination when the source of said mixed reaction was someone that was close with his daughter. Little Via had nothing to complain about, yet Stolas was a good parent and... he was genuinely unsure on how to handle a human. He had seen them killed, possessed, mind-controlled and led to do some horrible things in the name of amusement. But never once he thought of taking care of a human child. What were his needs? What kind of diet was he geared to? And what if some of the toys Via had would be less pleasant for a boy to keep?
So many good questions, and yet even more warmth at the sight of these two at 'work'. It was morning and while Stolas knew that cereal with some milk would provide a good middle ground for the children's meal, he couldn't help but smile mirthfully as they brought crayons and papers on the dining table.
Stolas peered over their secret whispering and plotting, and while he was entertained by the general sense of good planning behind their action, he knew that they were going for something a bit... risky. And hardly giving them any good result due to whom they were 'targeting' with a gift.
Offering a sacrifice to his wife for the sake of softening the blow that was Alan's stay at the manor was adorable, but at the same time a potential issue in the long-run. Stella loves gifts, that sentence was nothing new to Stolas, but after years of sparing himself from giving the annoying woman everything she asked for, he could tell that a gift now felt more like an attempt for an exchange. That would be the case if it was him to give the gift.
In this case, the logic morphed into something a bit more complicated. Via never gave anything to her mother and, likewise, Stella hardly was the kind of mother that would pamper her daughter with attention and things that could appease the child. In that regard, the Goetic prince was glad that was the case as it allowed him to teach Octavia to not be as shallow as her mother.
A gift from Via would be seen less as an appeasing play and more like a cute but silly effort to make an exchange. Your neutrality in exchange for the item. Such an amusing idea, and yet something he wasn't sure he should allow to happen. It could easily end with a souring for Via and her relationship with her mother.
Yet... he decided to give the kids some faith.
After all, they wouldn't do something too dangerous or extreme as a mere gift. And oh boy was he surprised by what ended up happening.
He listened to an early bit of their pitching session, their initial ideas sounding quite innocent and nothing of what eventually was picked as the final gift idea for Stella. Lunch came and Stella was in a surprisingly bad mood. Not for normal reasons either since she grumbled on her friends having planned a party without inviting her. Rare, but quite the setting to not offer a gift to her. In fact, even looking at her would be quite a risky move.
Yet the children didn't seem to realize that. Either that or they were actually confident that their gift would put her in a good mood.
And it did, but not in a way that Stolas could have predicted out of knowing these two being mere children. They approached Stella's seat, the demoness noticing and already preparing some stern lecture which Stolas was ready to quickly interject but... that didn't come to happen. Not when the children both raised a large envelope containing numerous files in it.
Stella frowned, her bad mood persisting. "What is it?"
The cold inquiry was met with smiles.
"A gift." Both children replied at once and Stella decided to humor their efforts despite her lack of interest to be disturbed.
She snatched the fat envelope from their hold and retrieved the first thing her clawed hand could find inside which was a picture- which she suddenly shoved back inside, face burning red through the pristine white feathers as she wide-eyed stared at the kids.
"W-Where did you find this? Who gave this to you?"
The two children shared a look, perhaps thinking they were about to be punished. Stolas leaned closer, intrigued by this circumstance and wondering what had gotten Stella this worked up.
"Well, we wanted to give you something, mummy, so we decided to see what you would like through the servants," Via started to say with an innocent tone. "They mentioned that your bad friends didn't invite you to this party and we were confused by it since you are always invited to parties."
Stella nodded swiftly. "And?"
"So we asked if any of them knew of a detective!" Octavia squeaked loudly before slumping a bit in defeat. "But they didn't."
"Still, one of them was related to the mother of one," Alan continued from there, the boy's tone being quite happy with that development. "So we asked the kind lady if she could help us about it."
"And you got in contact with... a detective?" Stolas pressed on the topic, a bit worried about what they got in their hands and just handed it to Stella.
The boy nodded. "Yup. We told him that we wanted to know why some rich nobles wouldn't invite a friend of theirs to a normal party, and they got confused too so they decided to do a... 'preliminary check-up'."
"And they found a lot- as much as that folder can keep!" Via piped in happily, smiling as she took over the explanation once more. "They said that they did a lot of bad things that would have displeased mummy so they didn't invite her."
Stella clutched tightly on the folder. "Indeed, mummy doesn't like any of this."
They both paused at this, but the woman smiled.
"Oh, but I am not mad at you. In fact, I thank you both for being... good children."
They both beamed at that, but the woman was done as she stared at Stolas.
"Dear, I believe we can make a few calls together to my 'friends'. Please, take a look at what we may have to discuss about."
The Goetic Prince was intrigued by the request for a combined attack, but as the folder found itself in his own hands, Stolas was given a proper glimpse on what had gotten Stella happily murderous and eager to claim heads for the day. He retrieved a picture, which he was quite confident was the one Stella had first seen and... Oh dear, that was a muscular hellhound lady... with a dick. A big dick at that. He pushed the picture back in the folder, face showing embarrassment, intrigue and understanding on what his wife was looking to do.
"D-Did you two see anything inside the folder?"
Via shook her head. "The detective said that we shouldn't and that he was keeping a few pictures for himself as... 'payment'."
Oh well, that excluded any unusual requests from money by an Imp or two. Still, the circumstance was quite interesting since it was clear their gift effort had resulted in success and, at first glance, Stolas could tell his wife had gotten a bit soft around these two for the time being. Maybe... This could end up well if they keep up the good work.
If only he knew that things were about to get more interesting as a new friend may be in Via's close future.
AN
Via and Alan being masterminds and lucky info-seekers. The sheer amount of chaos they will cause to hell will be delicious- even more when they get a new buddy to their rascals' brigade.
REVIEW Q&A!
Coldblue2015:
1) Oh, everyone but Alan is getting roped in that;
2) I already answered that in the new chapter of the story;
3) YES!
4) I have a couple of ideas like that, yes.
Guest (Chapter 7): I am going to tell you a secret, commissioning artists to make comics is expensive as heck. And I doubt I can get one done since I have a… side-project to put money on.
