Chapter 5
It had been a wonderful day at the fair and Anya was giggling as she was sitting on her father's shoulders as they walked home that evening. "Oh, what a wonderful day this was," Yor said with a smile. "We need to have more family days like this, don't you agree, honey?"
"Definitely, my love," Loid said, smiling back at her.
Anya giggled as she hugged her new dolphin plush that her father had won for her and they soon arrived at home with Loid lifting Anya off his shoulders and setting her on her feet. "Okay, sweetie. Time for bed," he said.
The little girl yawned. "Okay, Daddy," she said. "Can I have a story?"
"Yes."
The little girl ran off to get ready for bed and Yor smiled. "She may be asleep by the time she's ready for bed," she said.
"If so, then I'll read her two stories tomorrow night," Loid said.
"You're such an excellent father to her, honey," the black-haired woman said, kissing her husband sweetly before heading off to make sure the house was secure while Loid went to check on their daughter.
Sure enough, Yor had been right. No sooner had Anya changed into her pajamas and brushed her teeth, she had fallen asleep on her bed, a book beside her. Smiling, Loid tucked in the little girl, placing the story on the nightstand nearby so that he could read it to her tomorrow night. "Goodnight, sweetie. Sweet dreams," he said softly, kissing her forehead in fatherly affection before leaving the room, making sure the nightlight was on and carefully closing the door.
He headed for his and his wife's room and saw she was in her pajamas and ready to go to sleep. "I think that walking wore me out a bit," she said.
"Well, we did walk around the whole fair," he said as he got ready for bed and soon was beside her after turning off the lights. He kissed his wife lovingly. "Goodnight, my love."
"Goodnight, hon. See you in the morning," she said as they both fell asleep.
Around one o'clock, Loid heard the bedroom door open slowly and he woke up, ready to reach for his weapon as he glanced up carefully.
"Daddy? Mommy?" Came a soft whisper he recognized to be Anya's voice.
"Sweetie?" He replied, turning on the light beside him and he turned to see Anya looking at him with a tearful expression. "Oh, honey, did you have a nightmare?"
She nodded. "Yeah," she said.
He sat up and lifted her up onto the bed and onto his lap, hugging her as she clung to him. "What was your nightmare about, sweetie?" He asked.
The little girl sniffled. "Those kids at school," she said. "They were throwing paper balls at me and calling me mean names and I tried to find the teacher, but couldn't. I couldn't even find you and Mommy. It was scary."
Yor woke up right then when she heard that. "When couldn't you find us, sweetheart?" She asked sleepily.
"She had a bad dream where she couldn't find us, hon," Loid explained.
Yor woke up more at that. "Oh, dear," she said as she gently stroked her daughter's head. "Sweetie, you know all you have to do is call out to us and Mommy and Daddy will find you. We have very good hearing and nothing would stop us from looking for you when you call out to us."
"Promise, Mommy?" The little girl asked.
"I promise, sweetie," the young woman said. "Do you want to stay with me and Daddy tonight?"
"Please?" The child begged hopefully.
Loid smiled. "Alright," he said, letting her crawl under the covers. The child was soon settled down in-between her parents and Yor smiled.
"There. Now no monsters can get to you," she said. "If they dare try, they'll deal with me and Daddy."
"Your mother's right," Loid said with a nod.
"Okay," Anya said, yawning as she clutched her stuffed animal, which was a blue bunny, close to her as she rested her head on the pillow, feeling her parents tuck her in, which made her feel safer as her father turned off the light and lay back down.
"Go to sleep, sweetie. Mommy and Daddy are right here," he soothed her.
Yor began to hum gently, her soft voice soothing her daughter and it wasn't long before the little girl was sleeping peacefully and the two adults fell back asleep.
The alarm went off in the morning and Loid grumbled as he shut off the alarm, checking his phone to see if there was any messages, but finding none. He settled down to doze a bit more while Anya stirred a little, opening her eyes sleepily.
"Daddy?" She asked.
"Shh, go back to sleep, sweetie," he soothed. "It's very early. The sun hasn't even woken up yet."
The child closed her eyes and fell back asleep and Loid saw his phone go off again with a message and he looked at it, finding it to be his superiors, who asked him to keep an eye out over the next few days and keep a low profile as the man they were after had sent some men out on a mission. Loid sent a reply back before getting up quietly and checking to make sure the doors were properly locked and the windows were locked too.
He even checked the security cameras for outside and all was clear. He saw the family dog sleeping in the living room and nodded, knowing the dog would alert them if someone was trying to break in.
Satisfied that they were safe, he checked the town events and saw there was nothing going on in town, so that helped. "Alright, we'll do some takeout and movie nights for a few days." He then saw Monday was a holiday for the school children. "Oh, good. That way Anya doesn't miss school."
He hoped that things would settle down in time for Anya to head back to school on Tuesday. If they hadn't, he would either ask for Anya to have an excused absence or he would personally go drop off and pick up his daughter from school.
After a bit, he went back to bed, kissing his wife on the cheek and kissing his daughter's forehead before he settled back down to sleep.
An hour later, Yor woke up and she sat up, smiling as she saw her daughter sound asleep still and her husband looking like he was trying to sleep, but was mostly awake and she giggled when she saw why a moment later.
It seemed that Anya had stolen the covers a moment ago and Loid was debating on trying to wrestle the covers from the young girl or just let it be. Yor giggled softly at this, making her husband give her a look before he decided to get up and then, with a smirk, he suddenly lifted Anya up, blankets and all. "Blast off!" He cried out, waking up his daughter, who squealed in surprise before giggling as her father playfully landed back on the bed with the little girl still bundled up in the blankets and Yor smiled as she watched her husband make their daughter smile.
"Well, who's up for waffles?" She asked.
"Yay!" Anya cheered happily.
"With syrup and whipped cream and some strawberries," Loid said.
"That does sound yummy," Yor said, smiling again.
As Anya cheered again, Loid smiled, happy to see both his wife and daughter happy.
