Chapter 10

"Anya! Hold on a moment, sweetie!" Yor said with a laugh.

"But Mommy! I have to find the perfect costume!" The child said as she scampered off to find the costume she wanted.

"Someone is looking forward to trick-or-treating," Loid said with a smile.

"Oh, be quiet and go get your daughter," his wife groused, but there was no heat in her words, indicating that she wasn't truly upset.

Chuckling, he went to go find Anya, who was looking at some of the costumes before she perked up at seeing a pumpkin costume. She tried to reach for it, but it was a bit above her head. A worker noticed and smiled gently.

"You want the pumpkin costume?" He asked the little girl.

"Yes, please," she said politely.

The worker handed her the costume. "Thank you," the little girl said before turning to find her father, finding him a moment later. "Daddy! I found a pumpkin costume!"

"A pumpkin, hmm?" He asked with a smile. "That's what you want to be for Halloween, sweetie?"

"Uh-huh!" The little girl said happily.

Yor came up to them and smiled at her daughter's choice. "I was thinking of dressing up as a ninja," she said, finding that costume in her size.

"Hmm. I think vampire might suit me," Loid said as he found the costume in his size.

"Oh, you'd make a very dashing vampire, my love," his wife said.

"And you'd make a beautiful ninja while our little girl would make the cutest pumpkin ever."

Anya giggled happily as she then selected her treat bag and Yor picked up some candy to hand out to the kids that came to the door. "Alright, I think that's everything," she said.

"Mommy! Weapons!" Anya said suddenly.

"What?!" Yor said, panicking a little. "Where?!" She asked, worried that she had accidentally dropped one of her weapons with her unknowingly.

The little girl giggled. "For your costume, Mommy," she said. "A ninja needs stars and a sword, right?"

Loid chuckled in amusement as Yor calmed down, realizing her daughter had a point, and she was very glad that her own private weapons were still safely hidden. Even though she didn't sense any danger, she wanted to be ready in case her enemies came to attack her or her family.

"Yes, you're right, pumpkin," she said to her daughter. "A ninja must have throwing starts and a katana."

"Let's help Mommy find those," the spy said to his daughter, making her giggle as she looked around and he looked at his wife with a grin and she gave him a look before grinning.

"I hope you didn't put her up to that," she said, her voice a bit playful.

"Nope. She came up with that herself, though you seemed to panic when she said that."

Yor blushed a little. "Well...I want to make sure you two are safe," she said. "So when Anya did that, I was worried someone was pointing a weapon at us."

"Don't worry, my love," he said, hugging her. "I'll keep you and Anya safe."

His wife smiled and kissed him back as Anya squealed as she had found the weapon accessories for the costume she had selected. "There they are, Mommy!" She said.

The same worker from earlier laughed in amusement as he handed the costume accessories to Yor. "She's excited for trick-or-treating, huh?" He asked.

"Yes," Loid said with a smile.

They soon paid for their purchases and Anya was on her father's shoulders, laughing as she looked around at the Halloween decorations before she got an idea. "Daddy? Mommy? Can we go to the pumpkin patch?" She asked.

"Ah, I knew we were missing something," Yor said. "Thankfully, one of our good friends still has some pumpkins left."

The pumpkin patch was surprisingly still full of pumpkins, but it was also full of people. "Looks like your friend is getting the last-minute pumpkin seekers," Loid said.

"She and her husband noticed how there have been some people who wait until Halloween to get pumpkins, so they set aside one pumpkin patch for the ones who come early and one for those that come today. Sometimes the ones who got theirs early come back for a few more," his wife said.

"Yor! Loid!" Came a female voice and they turned to see the female owner of the patch waving to them. "There's still some good pumpkins left."

"Thanks, Sabrina," Loid said. "Our little pumpkin reminded us that we needed some pumpkins."

Yor found a small one and lifted it up before handing it to Anya. "What do you think, sweetie? You can paint it or we can help you carve it into the face you want it to have," she said.

"Yeah!" The child said happily. "And we need a big pumpkin, Mommy. The biggest one ever!"

Loid chuckled. "How will we get it home?" He asked.

"You can carry it, Daddy," the child said, smiling. "You're strong, like a superhero!"

Sabrina smiled at seeing how much Anya admired her father. "My husband and I can deliver it later too if it's too heavy to carry far," she said. "We actually are going to drop a few off that some other people paid us for."

"Then we'll take the largest pumpkin you have and two smaller, but still large, pumpkins for my husband and I, and the small one that Anya is holding," Yor said.

The man who owned the place found the largest pumpkin and it was huge, almost as tall as Anya. "Alright, this one's yours," he said to them.

Loid found two large pumpkins that were just right for him and his wife. "Honey, how about these two for us?" He asked.

She smiled as she saw them. "Perfect," she said.

They made it home before the sun began to set and were soon in their costumes, placing a bowl of candy out with a sign telling their visitors to take three pieces of candy and the house was secured before the family went out to trick-or-treat. Anya bounded down the sidewalk happily in her pumpkin costume while Yor, being true to her costume, was constantly alert and Loid was looking around too before he sneaked a glance at his wife and grinned.

"Too bad your neck is covered up," he said, getting into character as he leaned closer to her.

She chuckled. "Perhaps later, I let this vampire bite my neck and make me his queen," she said, playing along.

Loid grinned. "Eager to be my queen, my pretty?" He asked playfully.

"Eager to be my kind, Handsome?" She countered back, her voice equally playful.

Anya shrieked in surprise as a ghost spooked her, but then she laughed as she saw it was a good prank, going up to get some candy. The family walked the whole block and Anya's treat back was nearly full. "Wow!" She said, peeking inside.

"Looks like our neighbors were quite generous," Loid said.

The child was eager to have some candy, but Yor stopped her. "Wait, sweetie," she said. "Let's have Mommy and Daddy's police friends check your candy to make sure it's okay."

The child nodded and they soon came up to the policeman and his partner, a policewoman. Both smiled at the family. "Hey, Loid," the man said. "Need us to check Anya's candy?"

"Yes, please," the man said.

"I doubt our neighbors handed out bad candy, but we just wanted to be sure," Yor said.

"We understand," the policewoman said as the two checked the bag, thankfully finding nothing wrong. "Good news. The candy is good."

"Thank you," Loid said gratefully. "Anya, you can have three pieces of candy tonight."

The child beamed. "Can I eat one now?" She asked.

"After dinner," Yor said gently. "You don't want to spoil your dinner, do you? Mommy's making your favorite."

The child perked up at that and the family continued on the way, keeping an eye out for anything, but enjoying the evening walk as well.

Be safe, everyone! :) Also, check those candy bags, just to be on the safe side.
