Miss Fisher walked into the police station. Constable Collins was at his desk.

"Hi, Miss Fisher."

"Hi, Hugh. I understand Inspector Robinson wanted to see me?"

"Yes. Shall I—"

She walked into his inner office.

"—Tell him you're here!" he finished saying.

"Hi, Jack."

"Hi, Miss Robins."

"You wanted to see me?"

"That's right. I've come across this piece of paper. I thought it might be of interest to you."

He gave her a slip of paper with writing on it. She looked it over.

"May I borrow a pencil?"

She took one off his desk.
"Be my guest!" he said dryly.

She wrote a word on it below the writing. Then she put the pencil back and gave him the paper.

"Yes?" he asked.

"Yes!" she answered.

"You've just made me the happiest man in Australia!"

"I'm glad to hear that! Although I must say that's an unusual way to propose."

"Well then, let me be a little more 'traditional.'"

He stood up and faced Miss Fisher. Then he knelt down in front of her.

"Phryne Fisher, will you marry me?"

"Yes, I will, Jack Robinson!"

He got up and they hugged and kissed.

"Oh, and this is for you."

From his pocket, he pulled out a jewelry box, which he gave to her. She opened it; it was a one carat diamond ring.

"Jack, that's so beautiful!"

"So are you, Phryne."

They kissed again.

"I have reservations for the Firebird—and you are my guest."

"Well, I sure hope you didn't invite another girl!"

He laughed. They left the room together.

Miss Fisher gave Hugh a kiss on the cheek—which delighted him!

"You proposed!" he said to Jack.

"And she accepted. I'll be gone for approximately two hours; hold the fort until then."

"Yes, sir—and congratulations!"

"Thank you, Constable."

He shook Hugh's hand. Then he and Phryne left.
