Rain
Sheets of rain bombarded her. The wind was so strong she was knocked off balance several times. The lightning and thunder cracking overhead awoke her senses and illuminated her tired face. And yet, nobody could see her crying. She sighed, almost with a sense of relief. She always loved to walk in the rain. But she wished she had worn waterproof makeup.
She continued to walk down the near-flooded street, trying to avoid the puddles that seemed unavoidable. It had been a rough day. A long day. An exhausting day. A downright absolutely horrible kind of day. She wanted to just go home and curl up underneath the blankets and die. One of those kinds of days.
It wasn't right from the start. It was a dance. They moved around each other until they eventually found what they wanted. It meant nothing, because it was nothing. But how could nothing hurt so badly?
Somehow, she knew that their relationship had meaning. What the meaning was, she didn't know. The fighting was constant. They would fight, he would end up drunk at her apartment, and they'd forge through meaningless sex, trying to make things right again. But nothing was ever right. Nothing hurt this badly.
They had fought again. He would be at her apartment in a few hours, and once again, she wouldn't know how to turn him away. When his voice came deep with a slight slur to it, she would be his. And nothing would be alright.
She made her way back home, wiping her eyes about a block away. Black streaks on her fingers showed that her makeup was running. It wasn't from the rain anymore. It was her tears. She looked up at the swirling clouds and waited for one to engulf her. Nothing happened. She ran her fingers through her soaking hair and wiped more black streaks off of her face. The rain was cleansing, although it was making her a mess. The rain was their relationship. Nothing hurt this bad. Nothing would ever be alright.
