Together Again
Chapter 8
Mike was exhausted simply getting back home, and he was thankful for the comfortable bed that was waiting on him. Dr. Evans had gotten the pathology reports back, and there was thankfully no more cancer. He just had to recover from the surgery. Christine settled him in and began preparing supper. Mike had dozed off, but Hannah sticking her head in woke him up. As soon as their eyes connected, she gave him a bright smile. She stepped in and sat down next to him on the bed.
"Mom didn't want me to wake you up, but I wanted to check on you." Hannah said.
"Its okay. I missed you." Mike told her.
"I missed you too. Katie wouldn't admit it, but she did too." Hannah said.
"I know. Let's go see what your mom is cooking up? Would you believe when we first got married; she didn't know how to cook?" Mike said as he slowly got out of the bed.
"Seriously? Its like her favorite thing to do now." Hannah asked.
"Yeah. My Grandma Hannah, the one you're named after taught her. I wish you had known Grammy. She died while your mom was pregnant with you. Once you were born, we knew we had to name you after her." Mike explained. As soon as they walked into the living room, Christine gave him a worried look.
"You should have stayed in bed! Hannah…" Christine admonished.
"Its okay. I was needing to get up and I promised I will go back as soon as I get done eating." Mike said. He gave Christine a kiss to diffuse her.
"Alright, you sit down in the living room until I finish. Hannah, you can set the table. Katie will be home soon. She ran to the store for me." Christine said.
"Yes, ma'am." Hannah agreed. Mike sat down in the recliner he had bought and moved into Christine's house and Christine put a throw blanket over his lap.
"And don't get onto me about fussing. I have the right." Christine insisted. Mike simply winked in response. He knew better than arguing. Just then Katie came in. She completely ignored Mike and carried the needed groceries in. "She really is glad to have you home. We all are." Christine said.
"I'm glad to be here." Mike said. He pulled Christine down and gave her a long kiss, all the while remembering when they were a young couple who was just trying to get to know one another, before they had kids, or careers; for that matter. He had to wonder if they could get back there, while still being parents and having busy careers.
