PART 2

Earlier the next morning, upon arrive at work, Detective Murdoch decided to head to the Morgue, where Miss Hart should be finishing her postmortem on Henry Higgins. However as he got close, the old detective took a deep breath, as much as pain him see his friend and colleague on that slab he still needed to do his work, so taking a deep breath, he crossed himself and entered the main area, deciding to treat this like another case.

''Hello Miss Hart, what have you?' he asked.

''Detective,'' she greeted him. ''I finished the postmortem, it is a shame, he was a good copper and a good man.''

''Indeed,'' he agreed. ''So?'' he asked and in response, Violet rolled her eyes in annoyance as she always thought Detective Watts had more feelings than Detective Murdoch.

''It was a single stab on the abdomen who killed him, it perforated his stomach, but you see this yellow shade around the wound?''

''Yes, what is it?''

''I´m conducting some test, but I believe the blade was poisoned, I also found this in the wound,'' she replied showing the detective a vial with the tip of the blade inside.

Thank you, Miss Hart… what had Higgins done to deserve such a fate?'' he whispered to himself and left.

Back at the station, he realized how quiet it was; the Inspector must had passed the news to the lads before left to do the hard part of their work. This way, the detective set up his tools and started to examine the tip of the blade, in order to find some clue that could lead them to the killer. No much longer, the Inspector arrived and went directly to his detective´s office to talk to him.

''How was there, Sir?'' Murdoch asked and in response Thomas rolled his eyes.

''How you suppose it was, Murdoch?''

''No Sir, I mean… did Mrs. Higgins-Newsome provide us with any information? Something that Henry could not have tell us?''

''No, she just cried and cried and asked us to bring her husband´s killer to justice. And you, any luck?''

''Unfortunately no Sir, Miss Hart found this tip inside the wound, but its indicate nothing. I was thinking if I could go check the crime scene myself.''

''Go on Murdoch and take Crabtree with you,'' the Inspector said as they saw the constable having difficult to read a document. ''Maybe he need some talk.'' He said.

''Yes, Sir.'' Murdoch nodded in agreement.

While they walk toward their colleague had his final moments, William decided to ask George what was happening to him, since for a while they had noticed that the constable have struggled to read his journals and documents from the police.

''I don´t know Sir,'' George confess. ''My vision is getting blurry and specially at night, its been difficult for me to see… you think… you think I may lose my sight?'' he asked scared.

''I hardly think so George, you may have cataracts, or just a tired vision, nevertheless, I advise you look for a doctor,'' Murdoch tried to cheer him up. ''Now let's concentrate here, look, there´s still blood on the floor..''

''Higgins´s blood.'' George lowered his head in sadness.

''Precisely, George, you remember which direction the killer ran?''

''I think he ran toward there, Sir!'' George replied pointing to his left as they wnt to that direction.

Not far away from there, Marian were folding clothes at her backyards, when she head footsteps approaching and a male voice announcing the presence of the constabulary. Still, the sight of George made her freeze and with a yell, she ran away, without know where she was going.

''Hey, come back here!'' George yelled running after her.

''George!'' William called him, but he didn´t listen.

''You listen to me!'' the constable growled. ''A friend of mine was killed, so you better tell me what you saw before…''

''No, please, don´t hurt me again!'' Marian cried desperately, when Murdoch approached and grab George´s arm.

''Its enough Constable,'' he ordered to George. ''It´s alright ma´am, we just want to know if you have seen anything, any kind of information you could have, please, give us.''

''No, I h-haven't.'' The black woman replied still scared, now more for her husband than foe herself.

''Thank you, Ma´am.'' The detective replied and pushed the constable away.

''Sir, she may knows something!'' George exclaimed when they were far from the Ward.

''I know George, but as much as we are desperate to find what happened to Henry, this isn´t the way to approach anyone, understand?''

''Yes Sir!'' the constable replied lowering his head.

Once they return to the station, William decided to question every one of their colleagues, even Detective Watts and the Inspector himself about Henry, what he could possible had done in the last week to suffer such fate, but as he expected, no one seems no have noticed anything strange happening with Henry.

''And about you, Murdoch? You noticed something rather suspicious?'' asked Brackenreid and in response, William furrowed his brows.

''Actually Sir… Once George was on leave, Henry was the one who helped me with the Midas case, If I recall…'' he suddenly stop and rush to the door. ''McNabb, bring Jonas Stanley here, I need to question him, now!''

''What about this fellow?'' the inspector asked confused.

''Sir, he´s the man I suspect of having doing the assassination, he claimed not to, but when he left, I saw him cursing Henry.''

''You think he was capable of…''

''I just want to find out, Sir!'' Murdoch replied with anger.

Unfortunately, however, Mr. Stanley claimed he had nothing to do with that, as he didn´t had the courage to kill that Midas guy, he couldn´t had the courage to kill a constable for that matter.

''And where are you, last night?''

''At the brothel, you can check there!'' Mr. Stanley replied. And turns out his alibi was correct.

As William step into his house, Julia immediately rush to embrace him. It happened that with Higgins death, the former doctor felt that danger was getting even close to her husband and as much as she and Ruth didn´t get along well, she sympathized with her sadness and fear she soon could be the one receiving such news.

''Julia, is everything alright with you?'' he asked, kissing her head.

''How can it be alright William? Someone close to us had died... I was start to wander when I will…'' she stops and place a hand over her mouth.

''Hey, sweetheart, everything is alight, I'm fine Julia and we will find this killer and give Henry the justice he deserves, don´t you worry,'' William smiled at her. ''Look, tomorrow I will interrogate Ruth, you want to join me? I suppose you can help me with that.''

''Of course William.'' Julia agreed.

The rest of the evening, the couple enjoyed a time together, remembering their friend and colleague and discussing why someone would want to finish him off.

Next day by the morning, as they get ready to left to Ruth´s house, the Inspector called them, saying there was another murder Murdoch needed to take care of.

Worried, the couple rush to where the Inspector asked them to meet him, just to find the body of another constable, killed in a way similar to Higgins. The only difference was that beside him, there was a note.

''I´m Sorry, this is the right one!''
