"Wanna see a card trick?" Roger asked trying to shuffle the deck of cards Mark had left out.
"Sure," April replied, giggling at her boyfriend's failed attempt at bridge.
"Okay," he shoved all of the cards together and fanned them out. "Pick one."
April obliged, selecting the two of hearts from the deck.
"Now memorize it," he instructed, separating the deck and placing half aside. "Fold it in half and put it in the pile."
"Wait, Rog, that's cheating," she objected, keeping her card intact.
He frowned. "Okay fine," he split his current half a deck in half, "put it here."
April placed her card where Roger told her.
He shuffled them a little and placed them on the table in front of him. April watched him stare intently at the displayed cards, his brown furrowing in concentration. She giggled; he always looked so cute when he was thinking about something. "Is it this one?" he held up the king of diamonds.
April shook her head.
He scowled, carefully staring at the backs of the cards. "This one?" he held up the four of clubs.
"Nope," she said.
"Fuck magic," he angrily knocked the cards onto the floor and leaned back on the couch with his arms folded. "It's not real."
April smiled and wrapped her arms around the sullen musician's neck. He turned to face her laughed. They pressed their lips together for a short kiss and that's when April knew Roger was wrong. Certain kinds of magic were real.
