Chapter Four

I felt frightened as soon as I awoke. It was my intention to skip school today. I didn't want to see Mike. Yesterday was the first time he had acted possessively. While that makes me nervous, I can't let it get the better of me. So with that I got up and got dressed for the day. I looked around my wrist for brusies around the area where Mike grabbed me roughly. I was right, it was big bruise. As a result I decided to wear a long sleeved t-shirt to hide the bruise.

Having dressed for the day, I headed downstairs to grab sometime to eat for breakfast. By the time I got up, Charlie was already left for work, as was his habit. This makes my mornings a lot easier especially when I'm having a bad morning. After grabbing a cereal bar I headed out to my truck to make my way to school. However, when I pushed my key into the ignition of the truck it spat at me and died. After a couple more attempts, I gave up and walked.

During my walk I realized I should have picked up my jacket before starting out. After all, I was going to take my truck, so I didn't think I would need it.

Once I arrived at school I was thankful it didn't start raining. As I was trying to avoid Mike as much as possible, I kept walking toward the front door and did not bother to meet up with Angela and the everyone else. Walking up to my locker, I took out my class materials for my first two classes. My first class was algebra. Even though I hated the subject, i will get to see Alice Cullen again. It was nice talking to her. Having waited by my locker for the bell to ring, I made my way to class.

When I walked into the classroom, I saw Alice sitting in the same seat as yesterday. She turned away from her book and looked at me. Even before I announced my arrival, she seemed to know I was there. Seeing her smile at me, I returned the gesture. After making my way to my seat, I sat down.

"Hi", Alice said cheerfully.

I couldn't help but smile at her excitement.

"Hi", I said back.

Silence followed for a few seconds. Alice seemed to be thinking about something. In the process of placing my book in front of me, the silence broke.

"So, I heard that you met my brother Edward", she said with the same energy as before.

I looked at her slightly confused. How would she know that I met Edward? Did he mention something to her? I think she must have seen the confusing on my fact as she answered my questions as though I had said them out loud.

"He mentioned he talked to you. I think he might have a crush on you", she admitted.

A crush on me? That's hard to believe. I mean I make no effort in the way I look. There are a lot other girls to crush over. But not me.

"I think you're mistaking", I say.

He lightly giggles.

"I don't think so. I've never seen him talk about someone as much as you and with every school we have been too he would never talk to anyone. Your the first", she says.

That's very hard to believe. He's never talked to anyone? I mean anyone apart from his family? That sounds pretty lonely.

"Why doesn't he talk to anyone", I asked.

The question came out before I knew I was opening my mouth.

"I guess because we always move around. Carlisle and Esme like to move around for work so we aren't in one place for very long and I guess he doesn't want to get close to anyone", she explained.

That makes more sense. But why start talking to me? It was strange for Alice to call her parents Carlisle and Esme. I know they are all adopted but I would have thought she would call them mom and dad. I can't say much I call my dad Charlie. The rest of the lesson went by in silence.

The rest of the morning went by pretty quickly. It was lunch next and I had a feeling that the reason that the morning went by quickly was because I knew I had to face Mike at lunch. As I entered the cafeteria I walked up to the buffet for some food and looked over at our table. There was Mike and everyone else. Mike spotted me and had the same murderous look on his face as he did yesterday. I looked around for anywhere else to sit. And thankfully there was an empty table at the far end of the cafeteria next to the exit so I decided to head over there and sit on my own today.

As I sat down I pulled out my tatted copy of Romeo and Juliet. I've ready this book so much that the spine is no longer working and everytime I place it on the table it falls flat. I open my water bottle and start nibbling on a carrot stick while burying my head in my book.

"May I join you", I heard a voice say five minutes into my book

I look up and it's Edward.
