Here is a new one shot for Downton Abbey. I don't know, apparently I can only write one shots that take place before and after the show. I've linked Downton Abbey to a movie I really like, which is The Wolf Man from 1941, so if there are things that you don't understand, it's probably from that, this includes an additional child for Mary and Henry, named John. He actually is one of the main characters in that movie. Anyway, I know that you all might think that this one shot is weird, but I hope you all enjoy it. Please review, they are very appreciated.

September 1940

Many years ago Mary promised her dying grandmother that she would never leave Downton as long as she lived, but now with war going on and the country she loved under nightly attacks by the Germans, she was wondering if it was for the better to finally leave.

She loved Downton, she really did, but the safety of her children was more important, and with George off in the trenches, Caroline and John were her main priority.

Henry could tell that something was bothering his wife, but he couldn't figure out what it could be. Finally, one night as they were crawling into bed, he asked her. "Darling, what is the matter, you've been so distant recently."

Mary sighed. "I'm thinking that it would be safer if we move away from Downton."

"Leave Downton? But-" Henry started before Mary interrupted him.

"For John and Caroline's sake." She said, "But I don't know where we could possibly go. I don't want to go all of the way to America."

Henry sat there thinking for a moment. "Let me send a letter to my aunt, there might be an old family castle that isn't used anymore, but it's in a small village in Wales, Darling, are you sure?"

Mary nodded. "Thank you Henry." She thanked him with a kiss.

Henry wrote that letter the next afternoon, and a few days later received a response. "Aunt Prudence has confirmed that Talbot Castle in Llanwelly is free for our taking." He told her at tea one day.

"What's this?" Cora questioned, setting down her cup. Henry panicked. He had assumed Mary had brought this up with her parents before, otherwise he wouldn't have brought it up until later that night.

"We've been thinking of moving away for a while, with everything going on right now, and Henry's family has a place in Wales where we can go." Mary explained, grabbing her husband by the hand.

"Oh, well, I'm happy for you two, and I understand your reasoning." Cora smiled. Mary noticed that her father didn't say anything, but left it alone for now, since the children had come down.

Over the next few weeks, Mary and Henry had planned for their move. They traveled to Llanwelly to look at the castle and grounds and around the village. They hired some servants, and dealt with some other final details before they would eventually move. They told the children, and while Caroline was much more upset about it, John was looking forward to the new adventure. Mary also wrote to George, to inform him that they would not be at Downton, for when he comes home again.

It was the day before Mary, Henry, and the children were to leave and Mary, Robert, and his newest dog, Osiris, were doing their last rounds of the estate together. "Papa, you've been very quiet about us leaving." Mary said.

Robert sighed. "What is there to say? It's not like I could convince you to stay."

"Why didn't you mention this before?" Mary wondered.

"Because I want you to go. You've lived here at Downton for almost fifty years, it's time for you to have your own place. I'm happy for you, and you deserve your happiness." Robert smiled. They continued to walk in silence for a few moments. "And besides, it's not like your Mama and I couldn't survive without you."

Mary chuckled. She's moving away tomorrow, and with that she will miss these walks and talks with her father.

The next morning, Mary and Anna shared a tearful farewell. Anna has been the housekeeper at Downton Abbey for years since Mrs. Hughes retired, but she continued to be Mary's lady's maid. Mary could have no one else.

Mary, Henry, Caroline, and John stood outside the house with Robert and Cora and all of the staff lined up, even with a surprise appearance from Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes.

"Goodbye Mama, I'll write to you soon." Mary promised. "If my letter has missed George, please send him our way."

"Of course, Darling. Come back any time." Cora hugged her.

After they all said their goodbyes, the family of four got into their car for the train station. A new chapter of their lives were starting.
