Chapter 2

A/N: I do not own anything from ATLA except this story, Enya, and the change in timeline. Apologies for the lack of seeing Enya travel. I suck at writing scenes like that.

It took many weeks before Enya found herself in a small Fire Nation village that wasn't very far from a port that had ships that smuggled things to and from the Earth Kingdom. She met an older woman named Hama. Hama was suspicious of her at first but allowed her to stay with her. After a few weeks of being Hama's lodger, the two of them learned that they were both waterbenders. Enya was slightly suspicious of the joy that Hama showed upon learning that Enya was a waterbender. However, Enya stayed long enough to be trained by Hama in the darkest use of waterbending that she had ever heard about.

It made her skin crawl when she performed it. She wanted to vomit, but she knew that if she acted like she was repulsed by it, Hama would turn against her.

Bloodbending. The bending of the water in a living thing's blood.

It was wrong on the basest of levels. It had taken too much time to convince Hama to let her go elsewhere to exact revenge on the Fire Nation. For her Water Tribe mother. Thankfully, Hama had brought her lies and now Enya was trudging her way through the Earth Kingdom. She was tired and thirsty, having drunk the last of her water a couple of hours ago. Sweat caused her one-size too big green men's outfit to cling to her body and her too-small shoes pinched her feet. Well, she could not complain when that was what people were willing to give a half-blood like her.

She was just about to give up for the day and rest when she began to hear voices of what sounded like sleep-deprived children finally being able to get some rest. Enya stopped to listen and was surprised to not hear any adult voices. She was usually more discerning than this, but she was just so tired and the thought of having a group to bunk down with and not having to worry about when she can get water was too enticing. She sighed, steeling herself for a possible fight, and shifted her pack on her back.

It didn't take Enya long to find the camp of the four children, who were waiting for her when she walked up to them. She blinked sleepily, looking just as sleep-deprived as they did. She didn't speak, waiting for one of them to act first.

"Are you a spy for that crazy firebending girl?" The Watertribe boy asked. Well, accused. Normally, she would have snapped back with a snarky comment but she didn't have enough energy to.

Enya suspected that she must have lifted one of her eyebrows. She blinked again to focus. "Umm, who? Look, I'm just looking for a safe place to rest and refill my water. What are a bunch of kids doing out without adults."

The Watertribe boy spluttered, having taken offense with being grouped into being a 'bunch of kids'. Before he could speak again, the barefooted Earth Kingdom girl piped in.

"Hey, just let her stay, ok? She's tired like we are."

Enya could not be more thankful for that girl than she was right now. Although the Watertribe boy and girl (who turned out to be siblings) were grumbling about how they had a stranger camping with them, the strange bald boy hadn't said anything on the subject. Enya picked a spot where they could all see her and placed her bedroll and bag down. The last thing she saw before she fell asleep was the four kids sitting and looking over at her.

Enya jolted awake when the Watertribe boy yelled at her to wake up. She groaned and sat up. She was starting not to like this kid, though could understand that he probably thought that she was Fire Nation. Well, at least full-blooded. He probably thought she was a Firebender too.

"What do you want? My name's Enya and I don't work for whatever crazy firebending lady you mentioned."

"But you look like one! You have gold eyes!" The boy—or Sokka as his sister called him— argued.

The Earth Kingdom girl came to Enya's rescue again. "Leave her alone, Sokka. She could be subconscious about her eyes."

An uncomfortable silence followed before Sokka's sister finally began speaking in a manner that was addressed to Enya. "So, why are you out here, Enya?" She asked.

Enya hesitated. She was finally in a safe space to tell someone who she truly was. However, she didn't know how reliable they were. She decided that it was worth the gamble considering they let her bunk down with them without knowing anything about her.

"Well, I'm actually half Watertribe so I was trying to see if I could make it to one of the Tribes to learn about the culture. My mother was taken while she was out at sea and decided to stay in the Fire Nation to raise me because of my eyes...you know, them being gold and all…" She paused, taking in how uncomfortable the two siblings suddenly seemed. Enya supposed that it was because of the implications of the situation from which she was conceived. "...I've always felt out of place in the Fire Nation so I was hoping that I might be more at home in one of the Tribes...It sounds impossible, but it's true…"
