Chapter 7

The smell of gas was getting stronger, and both heroes put on their oxygen masks. "Can you hear me?" Maria asked Johnny through her mask, who nodded, "Good." She paused, "Can you get the door open?" she asked, since the door was locked.

Johnny shrugged, "Get back from the door Tommy," he ordered the little boy on the other side. After getting confirmation that he had, he proceeded in running at the the door – it didn't move. He tried again, but still no luck, "We need help," he admitted defeatedly.

Maria nodded and reached for the radio, "Dad? We've found the boy, but we can't get the door open, any chance of some help?" she asked, but no reply came, "Dad?" she asked again, but all she heard was static. "No answer, something must be affecting the signal," she said.

Johnny nodded, and ran at the door again, "Shit!" he said angrily, and tried again. Still the door wouldn't open.

"Help me," Tommy said on the other side of the door.

Maria looked fearfully at Johnny, "Should one of us go back?" she asked.

Johnny shook his head, "We don't have any time," he said. "Water doesn't cause explosions, blast it!" he half ordered her.

Maria nodded, and took off her gloves. Putting her hands up she water blasted the door, but still it didn't move. "Do it together," it was her turn to give orders, but he looked confused. "Ram it, and I'll blast it the same time," she explained, and he nodded. "On three, one, two, three!" She blasted, and Johnny rammed, the door simultaneously. Finally the door gave way, had they not been wearing masks they would have felt the thick impact of the gas cloud, as it escaped the room and began travelling down the corridor throughout the hotel. But they were wearing masks, so the only thing they noticed was the little boy curled on the floor, coughing.

Johnny ran to him, and lifted him up in his arms, "We'd better get out of here," he said, and Maria nodded. Johnny went to pull of his mask to put it on Tommy's face.

"No, take mine," Maria said, pulling of her mask quickly. "My body will heal faster than yours," she explained before Johnny could protest, coughing slightly as the gas invaded her lungs.

Johnny stared at her for a second, and nodded. It made sense, plus he didn't know how he'd react to it if he'd inhaled it, maybe the heat in his chest would make him explode, so he put the mask on Tommy. "Let's go," he said and the two of them ran back down the corridor to the exit.

Maria was coughing uncontrollably, and began falling behind Johnny. But he hadn't realised, he was running to the exit, and it was in his sights. He ran through the exit, into the sunlight.

"Help!" he yelled trying to get attention,

"Over here," a paramedic in green shouted to him, and he took the boy to the nearby ambulance.

"Tommy!" came a female voice, one belonging to the woman back in the hotel.

"Mommy," Tommy greeted when he saw her.

Johnny smiled, and looked around for Maria, 'She must already be back with the others,' he thought and went to look for the rest of the team.

"Johnny!" he heard his sisters voice from behind him. He turned and he hugged him, "You ok, did you inhale the gas?" she asked him.

Johnny shook his head, "No, but Maria did, is she ok?" he asked.

Sue's eyes widened, "We thought she was with you…," she said with fear in her voice.

"Oh no," Johnny looked at the hotel. "She's still inside," he looked back at Sue, who had just been joined by Reed and Ben.

Ben stared at him, "You saying my girl is in there?" he asked loudy, his voice laced with both fear and anger.

Johnny nodded, and turned to run back in. Reed stretched his arm, and grabbed him, "No, you stay, let them go," he gestured at the firemen, who were already on their way in.

The four astronauts turned super heroes watched as the firemen, fully equipped with oxygen ran inside, and they waited for them to come out.

Seconds later, they emerged, one had Maria in his arms. Ben ran towards them, his feet thumping the ground, "Maria?" he called, "It's daddy, I'm here baby," he told her as the emergency people placed her down on a nearby trolley bed.

"Maria?" he called again, but she didn't answer him, her eyes were closed, and she wasn't breathing. Tears sprang to Ben's eyes, as he was joined by Reed, Sue and Johnny. They could do nothing, but watch helplessly as paramedics fought to save the life of a different breed of hero.
