I watched as my sister stormed off. I walked over to Noelle. "Sorry I should have warned you, Helen's tail is really... sensitive and for your own safety never call her cute. She hates that."
"But what she said about Royals and Nobles." She said, "It sounded like hatred."
"Oh, a few years ago the Noble's children in our Village tried to run her out of town with magic. She was just minding her own business when they attacked her." I knew why they attacked her, it wasn't long after... that day. "She ran all the way to the church crying, it took Sister Lily all night to figure out what had happened. Since that day Helen has had a chip on her shoulder about people who abuse their power over others."
"But... she didn't do anything, why would they attack her?" Noelle asked.
"They felt threatened, she's always had immense magic power especially when compared to most people in the village even as a child. And her tail just made her stranger, several families wanted Father to just leave her in the woods saying she was just a cursed child." She looked at me. "She... just hides it well most of the time."
Chapter 17: Noelle
I sat in the library with my head buried deep in a book reading and looking for any mention of Yamoshi and Sadala. "There have been many attempts to locate the mysterious kingdom of Sadala. But it would seem to have been... destroyed in the battle between Yamoshi and his followers and the Evil Saiyan." I groaned as I read. "There has to be something, those two ancient mages are the only time a tail is mentioned." I shut the book before grabbing another.
I heard the scrape of sandals on the hard wood floor. "In... Helen, I wanted to say... that it was irresponsible for me to grab your tail." I didn't even turn to face Noelle.
"You can just say sorry." I flicked through the pages. Nothing. I put the book to the side before grabbing another one. "I'm busy."
"I'm trying to be nice." Noelle huffed.
"Then just be nice. It isn't all that hard." I turned to her, my glare on her. "So many Nobles and royals look down upon the people that allow them their lives of luxury. They make the laws that they can't follow themselves. Attacking commoners for having dreams, paying bandits to attack those that rise above them." I had heard the news and gotten a letter from home about what had happened on Yuno's mission. "Not so... noble if you ask me."
"Not all of the elite is like that. Wizard King..."
"Wizard King Julius, I know he supports the common people and so do many of the squad captains. You can't have a army made up of two different dozen families." I turned back to the books. "I don't pretend there aren't good people, nobles and royals, but they are rarely allowed to change much as they are much fewer in number in power."
"Why are you like this? I'm trying my best here for Asta." She said
"For Asta?" My tone changed as I turned in the chair. "For Asta?" I noticed a light pink tinge on her cheeks. "For my dear idiot of a brother?"
"Well... I owe him." He turned her head away from me. "He's saved me twice now... once because... I have issues controlling my magic." She admitted.
I couldn't help but chuckle, 'Oh Asta, the idiot doesn't even realize what they have done.' "I see, you act all high and mighty."
"I don't act commoner." She jabbed back at me, but I was going to have fun with this now.
"Of course not, what do I know about the high and mighty Royal that can't control her magic and has to be saved by a muscular commoner without any mana." I smirked.
"Y-you're mocking me." She said, and look of fury on her face
"I mock nearly everyone to a degree. It's what I do dear, make fun of serious things. Even my brothers Asta and Yuno aren't safe from it." I smiled as I stood up, I stood at the same height as the Royal. If a tiny bit taller. "So, you work with Asta... what do you think of him?" I asked.
"Well, he is a simpleton brute that barely thinks his way through things. His lack of knowledge makes me question his sanity of his ridiculous goal of becoming the Wizard King." Noelle said.
"Well I'll admit it is ridiculous, you have to admire his dedication to the goal." I replied as I walked over to the shelves taking more of the fine tomes and setting them down on the table.
"But... he's so determined, and driven. Even if he acts like a child he won't abandon people." I looked over my shoulder at her, a faint blush growing.
"I'll forgive you... so longs as you make sure Asta stays alive. I may have more brothers, but Asta is the only one that will fall for my pranks on a consistent basis." I said before sitting back down, while gesturing for her to sit next to me.
She did and we sat in silence. "Um... I was wondering... why do you have a tail?" She asked.
"Don't know, trying to know now." I said as I flicked through the books until I found another retelling of the story of Yamoshi's Legend. "I lost my memory as a child, so I'm trying to understand by finding any reference to anything similar to my... condition. Powerful mages with tails."
"Not much to go on..." She said.
"Not quite, I found this legend about a mage named Yamoshi the Golden ape, I've found so few text even mentioning it. It happened before the battle of the first Wizard King and the Demon God by about four hundred years. So many of the earliest written accounts of the tale were lost in the the battle. He and the foe, a being only known as the Evil Saiyan were believed to have come from a Kingdom called Sadala, one that seems to have left no ruins. And to add to that they were both described as having tails and possessing vast amounts of power."
"So what are you saying?" She asked.
"Well, invisibility and mind magics exist. So what if the entire kingdom is hiding just out of sight. And my grimoire." My tailed placed the crimson leather bound book in my hand. "It isn't a Clover Kingdom Grimoire, nor is it any other known kingdom."
"Are you saying that you could be from Sadala?"
"Well, I'm not sure, but... what else could it be right now. And even if it exists, where in the world could it be?" I asked.
"Well as... impossible as it sounds, all legends have a grain of truth to them." She stood up. "I should make sure Asta didn't anger the captains."
"Go on ahead, I'll read a bit more." I waved her off.
Hey. I will do this till you say hey back.
