No-one in the wedding party thought to question why none of them saw Jay and Hailey for the rest of the night, assuming that they had just gone for drinks together, as they often did after a difficult case or on their rare days off. They were partners, after all, and very close friends outside of work.
For Jay and Hailey, that night together had been amazing, and Hailey was very glad that she was not sharing a room with Vanessa, because she and Jay had been able to be together for the whole night, without worrying about anyone else being in the room. They had fallen asleep in each other's arms and Jay was the first to wake up and the sight of Hailey in his arms in the morning made him happier than he had believed it would. As soon as Hailey woke up, he started to kiss her neck, but they were interrupted by Hailey's phone buzzing and Hailey, reluctantly pulled away from Jay to answer her phone. It was Kim.
"Hey, Hailey. I was wondering - Have you seen or heard from Jay? He was sharing a room with Kev and he didn't turn up last night and Kev's a bit worried, with Jay's history." Both Jay and Hailey smirked, because they were lying in bed together in only their underwear. It had been a very warm night and Jay laughed silently as he started to kiss Hailey's back.
Fighting against the distraction of Jay's lips against her skin, Hailey thought of the closest thing to the truth. "Kim, don't worry. I was going to text you, but I didn't want to interrupt you and Adam on your wedding night. Jay crashed in my room last night."
"What? Is he ok?"
Hailey turned to face Jay, who had a mischievous smile on his face and she bit back a laugh, grinning at him as she replied, "Yeah, he was. He just- finds it hard to sleep alone sometimes. Anyway, you and Adam have a great honeymoon and we'll see you back at 21 when you get back, ok? Bye, have a great time." She ended the call and placed her phone down, turning back to face Jay, grinning. "We had no problems with sleep last night, did we?" She kissed him and laughed. "You're such an idiot!"
Jay laughed and murmured, "Oh, I know." He chuckled, then asked, in a more serious tone, "Did you get any sleep?"
Nodding, Hailey rested her head against his and smiled. "I did and I know you did, too." She looked into his blue eyes. She wanted to tell him that waking up next to him was the best thing in the world. This was their time. Instead, she said, "You know, we have 2 hours before we need to leave for the airport and I know it's too late for you to go back to sleep."
2 hours later, in the hotel lobby, Kevin, Trudy, Tay, Vanessa, Voight and many others were waiting for Jay and Hailey to arrive; they were supposed to be going to the airport together. Kim had texted Kevin to say that she had spoken to Hailey and that Jay was with her, but neither of them had heard from either of them since and, considering Jay's history with PTSD, they were a bit worried. Little did they know that he was in Hailey's arms and the happiest he had ever been. Eventually, Hailey and Jay turned up. Jay was wearing the same clothes as the day before, but that often happened, so it made no difference. On the plane ride back to Chicago, Hailey sat with Vanessa and Jay with Kevin and Hailey could tell that her friend and roommate knew that she was hiding something, but she did not ask.
Their original plan of going to Molly's was cut short by how tired they all were from the flight, so they went their separate ways.
That evening, after having dinner and a shower, Hailey waited until Vanessa was asleep before she texted Jay, leaving her house and went to his flat. Even if Vanessa woke up, Hailey often went to Jay's at strange hours of the night, so she would not suspect anything. It was her time to be with Jay. Their time together was now and nothing had felt more perfect, more right than last night and it was a feeling which they shared, because, when they were together, both Jay and Hailey wore their hearts of their sleeves. Only the other person saw that side of them; that was part of why they were such good partners, best friends and, now, something more.
Jay had changed into a pair of black jeans and a jumper and he passed Hailey a drink as she entered his flat. She accepted it, with a smile, before she wrapped her arms around his neck and her were caught by his in a kiss. Looking into his eyes, Hailey smiled and whispered, "Last night was.. amazing, wasn't it?"
Grinning, Jay touched her nose with his as he answered, "Yeah, it was." He paused, then added, "I think we should keep this between ourselves for now. If we tell the team, they'll make a big deal out of it and I don't think either of us want that." That was one of the reasons why they worked together: They were both very private, the most private ones in their unit.
Hailey kept her arms around Jay's neck and she nodded as she replied, "I think that's perfect. I hope we can dance together some time. Here, in your apartment. By ourselves."
They both grinned and, in between their kisses, Jay whispered, "I think that can be arranged." They continued where they had left off that morning. Jay and Hailey were finally together. There were no more doubts, questions or searching. Their uninterrupted moment had happened. This was their time.
