Chapter 5: Took you long enough!
Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. After Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.
I do not own Chicago PD or any of the characters. Please read, enjoy and review :).
As a tradition, since Will had moved back to Chicago, whenever possible, he and Jay got together on a Wednesday evening, to have pizza and watch sports together. They worked it through their different shifts and had done for years. For this reason, Will was surprised when Jay had texted him on Wednesday evening, saying that he had had a really bad case and he just wanted to be alone tonight. Will had seen his brother struggling with his PTSD before, but he knew that Jay often wanted to hide it from him, so he respected that and, instead, called the one person he knew Jay opened up to. Jay's partner, Hailey Upton. Over the years, Hailey and Jay had become close and she and Natalie were friends and also knew that she was the only other person Jay allowed near him when he was struggling.
It was 10 when Will called Hailey. Hailey was sitting on Jay's bed. He was finally asleep, with his head resting on his legs and she held him close, knowing that today had brought back memories of his time in Afghanistan and, no matter what, she was going to be there to support him, because he was her partner, her best friend and her boyfriend. As soon as she saw Will's name flash up on her phone, she answered it.
"Hey, Hailey. Are you with Jay? How is he?" Will asked, instantly.
Hailey smiled down at the sight of sleeping Jay. He looked so peaceful, but she was certain that, later, his sleep would be anything but peaceful if he had nightmares. "Right now, he's asleep. He was struggling earlier, but I convinced him to lie down."
"I can come and stay with him tonight, if you'd rather go home?"
Looking at Jay and looking at the bag of tomorrow's clothes she had brought into Jay's apartment, she just replied, "No, I'm good to stay here. I'll call you tomorrow morning, or get Jay to call you. Thanks, Will." She also texted Vanessa to say she wouldn't be home tonight, before she rested her body against the pillows and closed her eyes.
Will knew that Jay and Hailey often stayed at each other's places when one of them was having a hard time with a case. They had done that for years, but there had been something slightly different in Hailey's voice.
By the time next Wednesday arrived, whilst Will had heard from his brother, Jay had not resumed their usual plans of meeting that evening and Will was working that evening, anyway, but he knew that Jay was off on Thursday, so he decided to surprise his brother, to go to his apartment in the morning and suggest that they spend some time together.
Both Jay and Hailey were off on Thursday, so they decided to treat it like a weekend, to relax and be together, which meant that, as usual, because Hailey did not plan, she was wearing Jay's clothes, but it was something they both liked. The sensation of waking up next to each other was something they both loved and Hailey wrapped her arms around Jay's neck, with a grin on her face, "I'm so glad we're not at work today."
Jay kissed her and smiled as he replied, "Me too." He kissed her nose, then asked, "Do you want waffles for breakfast?"
With a look in her eyes, Hailey replied, in a seductive tone of voice, "I want you and then I want waffles and coffee and then we can go for a run together and sit on the coach and watch things together."
Green eyes met blue as Jay chuckled and his lips met Hailey's with a tender kiss as he whispered, "You've got our whole day planned, haven't you?" They both laughed, then started to kiss, but the sound of the front door opening made them both jump. Thinking that it was one of their colleges, Jay grabbed a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and threw one of his shirts and a pair of sweatpants to Hailey.
As they were in the middle of doing this, Will walked into the room. He looked from Jay and Hailey and saw the hurried way they were getting dressed and the fact that Hailey was in Jay's clothes, at this time in the morning. Hailey and Jay looked at each other, as if they were teenagers and Will just laughed and remarked, "Well, it took you long enough!"
His brother and Hailey visibly relaxed, then Hailey excused herself to go to the shower, but she gave Jay a quick kiss on the cheek before she left and Jay walked into the kitchen and Will followed suit. The Dr watched his brother, before eventually, grinning, he asked, "So, how long's this been going on? How come no-one mentioned it at Molly's?"
Jay shook his head and passed his brother a cup of coffee, before he replied, "Because no-one else knows. It's new to us both and we want to keep it private." He paused, then added, "We got together at Kim and Adam's wedding." He chuckled, before asking, "What are you smiling at?"
Will smiled, before he looked at Jay seriously and replied, "I've never seen you this happy. I mean, you and Hailey together, it fits. You go well together and you're good for each other. She's good for you and you balance each other out. If you guys don't want to tell people, that's none of my business." He stood up. "I'm gonna go."
Without warning, Hailey appeared, placing a calming hand on Jay's back as she smiled, "No, Will. Please stay. It'd be great if the three of us could spend the day together."
If Will could have captured the look on his brother's face, he would have done, so he accepted Hailey's offer without hesitation and he saw the way Jay and Hailey looked at each other. He saw a glimpse of his brother, the one he had known before Afghanistan and that was because of Hailey. Grinning, he added, "You look good in Jay's shirt and sweetpants, Hailey!" This caused Hailey to glare at him and Jay to punch his arm, but the three of them together felt natural. It felt as if they were family and, even without asking his brother and knowing that Jay might not know it himself, Will knew that Jay was in love with Hailey.
