The unit had been shocked by Vanessa's sudden departure for her undercover assignment with the New York FBI, but it was the best decision for her and Hailey was glad that her friend was pursuing what she loved. Being at work and home without Vanessa was strange, even though Hailey had been spending most of her free time at Jay's apartment. Without any discussion, Jay and Hailey started to spend their time together in Hailey and Vanessa's house, having the whole house to themselves.
Hailey was aware that, for Jay, this was a major decision, because he only slept in places where he felt safe. He felt safe with her, in her house. Hailey loved waking up in her bed, with Jay beside her. It was an adjustment which Jay just made, because Hailey's house was bigger than his apartment. He still spent time there, but, when he and Hailey were together, it was at her house. Still, none of their team suspected that they were together and they planned on keeping it that way. When Hailey woke up in the morning, Jay was always there, even though, most of the time, he woke up before her.
As always, at 5, Jay was the first to wake and he left Hailey sleeping, because she was so peaceful and he made coffee for the two of them before he slipped back into bed, beside her and he pulled her close as her eyes started to open. "Good morning, Sleeping Beauty."
Hailey's blue eyes were shining as she kissed Jay and murmured, "Good morning. I love waking up next to you. I love you being next to me." A cheeky smile crossed her face as she asked, "You can make the coffee again, right?"
Jay laughed and pulled her closer. "Of course I can."
An hour later, when they were just about to have breakfast together, both of their phones vibrated. They were needed at work, so they left Hailey's bed and Hailey found a hoodie and a pair of jeans, tying her hair in a high ponytail, whilst Jay put on the clothes from his bag. He kissed Hailey on the temple, before asked, "If you get coffees and a breakfast muffin and some toast, I'll see you at 21?"
Grinning, Hailey nodded. "Yeah, see you there, partner." Whenever they spent the night together and were called into work the next day, one of them always went to get the other one coffee, so that they did not arrive at the District at the same time and buying each other coffees was something they had done when they had just been partners. This was something Vanessa had remarked on before, before they had been together. Thus far, Will was the only person who knew that they were together and they wanted to keep it that way. Hailey was certain that Platt knew, but that it was inevitable. The woman saw everything and there was no point in trying to hide a single thing from her and the desk sergeant had been right: Jay, Hailey's partner, was worth that decision she had made and she knew, in a second, she would make the same one over again.
Jay was the first one to arrive in the bullpen. He was even there before Voight, so he sat at his desk and filed some paperwork, wondering why they had been called in at 6 in the morning. Kevin was the next in, then Voight, then Kim and Adam, then, finally, Hailey, with two coffees, a muffin and a piece of toast.
"Hailey, you shouldn't have!" Adam joked, sitting back on his chair. "I'm sure you know my coffee order now, hands down!"
Pretending to roll her eyes, Hailey replied, "It's not for you, Ruzek." She sat down at her desk and passed a coffee and the piece of toast to Jay.
Laughing, Kim kissed Adam on the cheek and remarked, "I made you breakfast, remember?"
Adam smirked and kissed her in returned. "I remember doing more than this this morning, darlin'."
Whilst Kevin made sick noises, Jay and Hailey glanced at each other, smiling, with the memory of their morning as they sat silently, drinking their coffees.
Voight walked back into the bullpen, with a face of thunder. "Ruzek, Burgess- Ruzek, no time for that, thanks! We've got someone who's targeting wealthy young, married couples in the suburbs and kidnapping them. Upton and Halstead, you're up as Kelly and Ryan Trevors. The house is already established there for you. You guys just need to show up and wait for the kidnappers and then take them down."
Before Jay or Hailey had a chance to ask a question, Adam did, "Boss, if it's a married couple, shouldn't it be me and Kim?" The look of confusion was clear in his voice and on his face.
Voight just shook his head. "No, I want it to be Halstead and Upton. There's partners." He turned to face Jay and Hailey. "Get changed, get your cover IDs and go to the house. Wait for the kidnapper to turn up and then we'll take them down." Obeying the very clear order, Hailey and Jay stood up and made their way to the locker room and they were glad to be out of the bullpen, as it was clear that Adam was already annoyed.
Adam raised his hands in protest. "Boss, we all know Kim and I would be better at this. We're a married couple."
Rolling his eyes, Voight snapped, "No, because the two of you aren't good at working together. Halstead and Upton are close, but they're partners and they're professional. But, if you want to go and give them tips for being a married couple, go ahead."
In the locker room, Jay and Hailey changed into their undercover clothes. Hailey walked over to Jay, grinning, as she asked, in a teasing tone, "Do you think we're ready for this, Halstead? Pretending to be married?"
Titling his head to the side in a humouras way, Jay replied, "I'm sure we can be convincing, Upton." They both laughed and, had they not been at work, they would have kissed, but they did not want to risk it, so, instead, he just said, "I've got your back, partner. Always."
The house was in the suburbs and, just as Jay and Hailey were 'unpacking', one of their neighbours came over to talk to them. The house itself was very pleasant, with two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room and Hailey knew that Jay lied it when places were tidy. The woman was in her early 40s, with dark hair. "Hello, I'm Elise. I see you're just moving in. It's a wonderful neighbourhood."
Jay smiled and gave Hailey a silent signal for her to take the lead, so she smiled and replied, "It's very nice to meet you, Elise. I'm Kelly and this is my husband, Ryan. How long have you lived here, if you don't mind me asking?"
Elise smiled and replied, "I've lived here for 2 years and it's a wonderful place to live." She smiled, then inquired, "How long have you two been married?"
They were in public as a couple. They were more than partners on the job, they were undercover as a married couple, so Hailey took this chance to put her arm around Jay and she titled her head into his chest as he replied, "Only 2 months. This is new to us." They shared a silent glance, smiling at each other.
Later that evening, when they were in bed together, Jay whispered, with his head next to Hailey, "How are we doing, Hailes?"
Hailey kissed Jay and smiled before she replied, "I think we're very convincing, partner. I don't think anyone will think about it too much, considering how close we were before."
Chuckling, Jay nodded. "I think you're right. This whole thing is new to use, but we're making it work and we've managed to keep it private."
"Totally." They smiled at each other, before Hailey left the bed and said, "I'll take the first shift. See you in 3 hours."
She leant across the bed and kissed Jay and he cupped her face with his hands before he whispered, "I've got your back, partner. Always."
