Jay and Hailey found the person who was kidnapping young couples within a week and, whilst they were glad of the undercover assignment being over, they had enjoyed being together. However, Hailey had also found being in a space with Jay for that amount of time quite stressful, just because it was something she had never done before. Jay had, in the Army, and the tension in Hailey was clear and Jay was glad when Hailey explained it to him.
That evening, when they returned to 21, Jay found Hailey in the locker room and he greeted her with a kiss, considering that they were the only ones in the building. "I'm going to go home and crash tonight. Is that ok with you? Give you some space?"
Hailey finished pulling her blonde curls into a high ponytail before she nodded. "Yeah, that's a good idea." She looked down at her shoes, feeling awkward about it. She and Jay always spent their free time together. She looked up at Jay, and she didn't see judgement, but understanding, so she rested her head against her chest and he pulled her into a hug. Jay kissed the top of Hailey's head, before she pulled away and smiled, "I'll see you tomorrow."
Smiling back at her, Jay nodded. "See you tomorrow. Text me when you get home, will you?"
"Will do."
The silence of Hailey and Vanessa's house was so clear as Hailey walked inside, but she was glad of it and she texted Jay to say that she was home. They both needed a night to themselves, after being forced together for days, pretending to be a married couple. Hailey was reminded of how much she loved having Jay in her house and how happy she was that he was comfortable enough to stay there and, being Jay, he was always prepared with overnight bags. She texted Jay to say goodnight before she had a shower and went to bed.
The next morning, Jay was one of the first to arrive at District 21 and, as he walked through the doors, he could feel the eyes of the desk sergeant on him. "Chuckles, come over here."
Smiling as he obeyed, Jay remarked, "It's Detective Chuckles, if you don't mind. What can I do for you, Serg?"
Platt moved the glasses on her nose before she replied, "I just wanted to congratulate you, Chuckles, for your undercover op. You and Upton were a very good couple." She paused, then added, "You were very convincing. You passed very well as newlyweds." Hailey had mentioned to Jay that she was sure that Platt knew about their relationship.
Jay just smiled and nodded. "Well, thank you, Serg."
Removing her glasses from her face and placing them on the desk, Platt fixed Jay with her famous stare. "I'd just be careful if I were you, Chuckles. From what I've heard Upton is very taken with her mystery guy. I wonder how he'd feel about you and Upton being so close. Being best friends is fine, partners, but being as close as you might make him a bit annoyed."
"Well, I'll keep that in mind, Serg." Jay made his escape quickly, unable to shake the feeling that Platt was messing with him, just for the sake of it. He guessed simply for her own amusement. It would be what she loved to do and there had been something in her voice, in her face, that had told him just like. Jay being Jay had remained calm and collected, not missing a beat of the conversation. For Platt, that made it even better.
Jay texted Hailey to say that he was there, working at his desk. Voight was the next to arrive, going straight into his office and Kim and Adam arrived next, wrapped in each other's arms and laughing. They had been married for 2 months and Jay knew that Voight was observing their behaviour. He was so glad that he and Hailey were both happy to keep their relationship private, as opposed to being like Kim and Adam, who were very open and public with their relationship.
Kevin arrived shortly before Hailey, making a joke about how much time Kim and Adam were spending together. Kim was sitting at her desk, trying to work, but Adam was sitting on her desk and distracting her and Jay was glad that it was not just him who had noticed it; Kevin loved Kim and Adam and even he thought they were being too public this morning. Their relationship was in stark contrast to Hailey and Jay's.
When Hailey arrived, Adam was still sitting on Kim's desk and Hailey and Jay just smiled at each other and said good morning to each other, before they focused on their work.
The entire day was paperwork and, as always, Jay and Hailey remained focused on their work, whereas Kim and Adam became distracted by each other. They were newlyweds and they had never been partners. From the vantage point of his office, Voight watched Kim and Adam and Hailey and Jay.
At the end of their shift, Voight stepped out of his office and stated, "I have zero interest in your personal lives. You know that. No interest in Upton's mystery guy or Kim and Adam's marriage. But it's different when it effects work." Looking away from her computer, Hailey glanced at Jay and they shared a silent look, before they returned their attention back to their boss. "From now on, what's happening in your personal lives, stays in your personal lives. I don't want to see it in front of me in this office. Is that understood?" There was an agreement and both Kim and Adam were looking very embarrassed and they left the bullpen.
Voight wanted to talk to Jay about a case, so Hailey waited by her computer and, when Jay was finished, he went to the locker room. There were very few people there, so Hailey found Jay in the locker room. She titled her head and remarked, "That definitely wasn't for us."
Jay nodded and chuckled softly. "Yeah. We know who that was for."
Hailey walked over to his locker and rested against it. "I really appreciate you understanding I needed space last night. I did, but I also missed you."
Looking at Hailey, Jay smiled and nodded, "Me too." He paused, then asked, with a smile, "Are we heading back to your place, then?"
Grinning from ear to ear, Hailey stepped closer to Jay and took hold of one of his hands. "Of course we are."
After dinner together, as they were sitting on the sofa together, Jay remarked, "You know, Platt thinks that your mystery guy might be threatened by me. Because of how close we are."
Chuckling, Hailey moved her head from Jay's chest, adjusting herself so that she was facing him. "Does she now? And do you feel threatened by yourself?"
Jay smiled, then whispered, in a serious voice, "I get my partner, my best friend, Hailey. There's nothing better than this, for me. Being with you." There was a silence as they looked into each other's eyes, then their lips met in a passionate kiss and they held each other close.
