Chapter 12: Take care of your partner.

Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. After Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.

I do not own Chicago PD or any of the characters.

That night, Jay had two more nightmares, both of which were as violent and emotionally exhausting as the first. After the second one, he insisted on sleeping on the sofa, but Hailey did not listen to him. He said the same after the third one, but, again, that was not going to happen, because Hailey cared about him more than her sleep. After the third one, he also suffered from a panic attack and, once it was over, he settled into bed next to Hailey and drifted off into an exhausted sleep.

Hailey's alarm went off at 6, but Jay was so tired that he did not hear it. Normally, Jay woke up at 5, regardless of his nightmares, which told Hailey how much it had affected him. The alarm woke up Hailey and, after deciding that honesty was the best policy, she left her bedroom and called Voight. She would have supported Jay through last night, even if they were not together and she knew that Voight knew that it was something they did for each other. They were partners.

"Voight." Came from gravely voice on the other end of the phone.

Sitting at the kitchen table, Hailey spoke. "Serg, Jay had a really rough night. The case finally got to him."

There was no hesitation from their boss. "Tell him to take the day off. You too, Upton. Take care of your partner."

Smiling at the result, Hailey put her mobile down and had an apple before returning to her bedroom, where Jay was still sound asleep. He needed it, so she was glad that his body was finally allowing him to have uninterrupted sleep. Carefully, so that she did not wake him, Hailey slipped into bed next to Jay, resting her head next to his on the pillow and she closed her eyes, drifting off into sleep.

Two hours later, Jay woke up, rubbing his eyes and he panicked when he saw the time of his watch on Hailey's bedside, so he woke her up. "Hailey, we need to get up. We're late!" He left Hailey's bed and rummaged around in his overnight bag for clothes for the day.

Sitting up in bed, Hailey reached over to Jay, with a reassuring smile on her face. "Jay, I called Voight and he gave us the day off, so why don't you come back to bed? You need the rest."

Jay obeyed, lying back down in her bed, wrapping his arm around her, kissing her softly on the lips. He sighed and asked, "I need to call my therapist, don't I? I can't avoid it and I shouldn't."

Hailey chuckled slightly and nodded. "No, you can't."

"I don't want you to go off and find another partner." Jay smiled, before pulling Hailey closer and looking into her eyes. "Hailey, I know I said sorry last night, but I'm not sure if I said thank you. You really are the best partner in the world." He paused, then added, "Hailey, I knew I was safe because I could hear your voice. I knew you were there."

Running her hands through Jay's hair, Hailey smiled softly again. "Jay, there's no need to thank me. You're my partner and I know you'd do the same for me, in fact, you have, many times. I'd follow you anywhere." She kissed him, before suggesting, "Why don't you try to get some sleep before calling? I'll stay right here."

There was a silence as Jay stared into Hailey's blue eyes, taking in every aspect of them. She had stayed with him through the whole night, through 3 nightmares and a panic attack and, in that moment, he realised something: He was in love with Hailey Upton. His partner, his best friend.
