Both Hailey and Jay were stunned that Adam had apologised the next day and they both guessed that Kim had given him some stern words. They were very surprised by the apology, but it was welcome. Hailey also found it amusing; her relationship with Jay was still new, it was a different kind of partnership from the one they had shared before. They wanted to keep it private from their friends, but she wondered how Adam would feel if he found out. Jay was her partner, her best friend and, even though they had not talked about it, Hailey saw him in the rest of her life. She was in love with him, even though she had not told him. She had known since the day he was shot. As Vanessa had said, her mystery guy had stolen her heart, except Vanessa had no idea of how long Jay had held Hailey's heart. Hailey had Jay's heart, too.

Due to the powers that be, Hailey was on patrol with Platt, which Hailey didn't mind. It did mean that she and Jay weren't working together that shift, but they spent their free time at Hailey's house.

Normally, Platt was direct. She said what was on her mind, but, today, she was being rather quiet; she was waiting for Hailey to admit to her what she had suspected and what had been confirmed by the look Hailey and Jay had shared when Hailey had received the offer from the FBI. So, instead, when they were eating lunch, deciding to have fun, she inquired, "I heard Adam was complaining about not having met your mystery guy- is that true, Goldilocks?"

Holding in a sigh, Hailey just replied, "Yeah, it's true and I got sick of him asking me. Questioning my judgment and I told him so."

Platt let out a dry laugh. "Yeah, I bet you did! I would've paid good money to see that!" There was a silence, then she asked, "So, this guy of yours- the guy you're clearly serious about, what does he think about Chuckles? The two of you are very close."

Hailey smiled to herself before she replied, "I don't think my boyfriend would ever feel threatened by Jay. I know how to balance my home life and my work life."

With a dry smile, Platt nodded. "Believe me, I know. I've noticed. You and Chuckles are very good at separating your lives from work, maybe because you've been partners for so long." She paused, then added, "I'm proud of the two of you. It's clear you're happy together, but you haven't let that interfere with your job." Laughing, Platt added, "Chuckles didn't really seem to mind when I teased him about it. I think he knew I was messing with him."

Hailey turned to face Platt as she asked, with a smile on her face, "Of course he did. How long have you known?"

With a dry smile on her face, Platt took a bite out of her sandwich before she replied, "I suspected since Kim and Adam's wedding and it was confirmed when you were offered that job from the FBI. The look you and Chuckles shared that morning." She paused, then added, "He's your gold dust, isn't he?"

Smiling and blushing, Hailey just whispered, "Yeah, he is."

Platt fixed Hailey with a serious look, before she continued, "Do you remember when we had that conversation in the locker room, when you and Adam were together? About the sacrifice of dating someone you work with and how, if it wasn't worth the sacrifice, your relationship wasn't worth it." Hailey just nodded and smiled kindly, knowing where Platt was going with this. "So, let me ask you this, even though I'm sure I already know: Jay's worth it when Adam wasn't? He's worth the sacrifice. You two are great at being partners and you've remained professional, but… long-term, it might not work."

In a lower tone, Hailey smiled and nodded. She thought about how Jay made her feel. He was her best friend, her partner, her best friend. "Yeah, he's worth it, Trudy."

"You know, long-term, you guys won't be able to keep being partners. You know that, right? One of you will have to leave Intelligence. Change your careers and you know I care about both of you."

There was a silence and Hailey looked down at the ground, before she murmured, "I'd be willing to make that change, for Jay, and I know he'd do the same for me. We want this to work between us, more than anything." Hailey paused, before she whispered, "Trudy, I see Jay in the rest of my life."

Much to Hailey's surprise, Platt smiled and remarked, "I know. I've never seen two people better suited for each other than you two and everyone knows it took you guys long enough to get together! And the fact that you've thought about making such a sacrifice for your relationship tells me he's the one for you. But you might want to tell him that."

"I'm pretty sure he knows. He's my best friend and my boyfriend."

Platt nodded. "I get why you've kept it private, Hailey. Kim and Adam. Kim and Sean. They all did it so publicly and it suits you and Chuckles to keep it private. Don't worry, your secret's safe with me." There was a silence, then the older woman stood up. "Right, enough of this! Back to work."
