Chapter 34: A pretty amazing legacy.
Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. At Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.
Next chapter! I do not own Chicago PD or any of the characters. If you're still enjoying this story, please review. In the next chapter, the focus will be back on Hailey's 'mystery guy.'
As soon as Jay was sure that Avery was asleep in Vanessa's room, he told Hailey about what had happened to Avery's friend, when she had been 13 and, like him, Hailey was shocked. The idea of dealing with something like that at such a young age was awful, especially considering that Jay experienced PTSD of his own and Hailey had experienced it first-hand, because of him.
The next morning, Jay was the first to wake and he couldn't hear any movement from Avery, so he stayed in bed next to Hailey, with his arms wrapped around her as she slept. Hailey opened her eyes and smiled as she saw Jay. She kissed him good morning, before he murmured, "Good morning, Sleeping Beauty."
Beaming at him and wrapping her arms around his neck, Hailey replied, "Morning to you, too. Can I just say you looked great in that suit last night?" They kissed and looked at each other lovingly, but knowing that they couldn't continue because Avery was in the next room. Hailey kissed Jay quickly, then slipped out of bed and she kicked his overnight bag to the bed as she said, "I'll get the coffee going and ask Avery what she'd like for breakfast."
Downstairs, in the kitchen, Avery was already making breakfast for Jay and Hailey, wanting to thank them for everything. Hailey walked over to Avery and asked, with a smile, "Avery, what is all of this? This is the best breakfast I've ever seen in this kitchen!"
Avery turned to face her and smiled softly, and she said, "Well, I wanted to say thank you for everything and I mean, everything, Hailey. Two months ago, I had Mum and I don't have Mum now, but I didn't have a family and now I have Gail, Danny, Jay and you, Hailey, and, to be honest, on Friday night, you made me feel so welcome." She lowered her voice as she added, "Dad and I really bonded last night, more than I'd thought possible, and I couldn't be happier about it, even if it happened because of our respective traumas."
Hailey sat down at the kitchen table and titled her head. "Maybe you're right."
Jay joined them and the three of them had breakfast together, before Jay asked, "What would you like to do today, Avery? Your flight's at 10, right?"
Avery nodded and replied, "Yeah, it is." She paused, before she asked, "Would it be possible for the two of us to go to the district, where you two work? I'd love you see it and I'd love for you to come, too, Hailey."
Smiling, Jay nodded and smiled at Hailey and Avery. "That'd be great." There was a silence, then he asked, "Avery, is there something else?"
Avery glanced at Hailey first, who threw her a reassuring smile, before she looked back at Jay. Her dad. "Yes, there is. I've decided I want to transfer to Chicago Central University. I don't want to stay in Phoenix. My family's here now."
"Are you sure?" Jay asked, wanting to be certain that she was making the right decision, but it was clear from the look in Avery's eyes. She had made her decision. Jay smiled, glad about her decision. His daughter was going to be in Chicago, and he had seen the look Avery had shared with Hailey.
The trip to the 21st District was very quiet. Like Jay and Hailey, the team were off for the weekend, but Avery loved every second of it. It gave her a chance to see where Jay and Hailey worked and she saw Jay's office. Her dad. He was a Sergeant. She smiled softly; it inspired her, because he had not allowed his PTSD to control his life and she wanted to be the same, to be as strong as he was. Avery could also see how close Hailey and Jay were and she guessed that they had been friends before they had become a couple.
Jay and Hailey had gone back to Intelligence, leaving Avery at the front-desk, waiting and she was clutching her bag, watching everyone passing. "Is there something I can help you with?" Inquired a very dry, sarcastic sounding voice.
Avery turned round to come face to face with Trudy Platt and she smiled. "I'm alright, thank you, Sergeant. You're Sergeant Platt, aren't you, ma'am?" Both Jay and Hailey had told her about Platt.
The older woman surveyed her with her grey eyes, before she replied, carefully, "Yes, I am. Who are you? Wait a second, do I know you? You look very familiar, but I can't quite place you."
Resting her arms on the desk, Avery smiled and replied, "I'm Avery Corson, I'm Jay Halstead's daughter and I've been spending the weekend with him and Hailey." The shock on the older woman's face was clear, so Avery added, in a kind voice, "Sergeant Platt, both Jay and Hailey speak about you with great affection and admiration, especially Hailey; she told me how she became a cop because of you. If you ask me, that's a pretty amazing legacy."
Before Platt had a chance to say anything, Jay and Hailey walked back into the front-desk and Avery threw the older woman a small smile, before Platt called, "Chuckles, Goldilocks, you've got some explaining to do next shift."
Both Jay and Hailey exchanged a smile and Jay smiled at his daughter, before he nodded at Platt, "Will do, Serge."
Trudy Platt could not believe the words, but she knew that it was true. There was no doubt that the young woman was Jay's daughter; she looked like him and behaved like him a little and Platt could also see the bond that existed between the young woman and Hailey. Platt hoped that Jay would explain the situation to her soon.
