The next morning, as always, Jay was the first of the two of them to wake up and, unfortunately, he had a meeting to attend with another Sergeant from another district and the meeting also required him to wear his uniform. He changed into his blues, then looked at Hailey, who was still sleeping. With a smile, Jay kissed her head softly and left her to sleep, knowing how much she loved her sleep.
An hour later, Hailey arrived at the 21st District and she saw that Kim's bag and coat were at her desk, but Kim was nowhere to be seen, so she went to check that was alright. Kim was in the toilet, throwing up, so Hailey gave her space until she was finished, but she and Kim had recently formed a friendship and she wanted to ensure that she was alright. That was what friends did.
Finally, Kim left the toilet and washed her face. Hailey saw how she was shaking and her eyes kept landing on her wedding ring and her engagement ring. Kim was shaking and it looked as if she had been crying. Hailey lent against the locker, giving Kim space as Kim was still staring into the mirror and holding onto the sink. In a soft voice, Hailey asked, "Kim, are you ok? You were sick on Saturday, too."
Kim clasped her eyes shut and shook her head. Even her voice was shaking as she turned around to face Hailey. "Hailey, I'm terrified. I'm not sure if I can go through this again."
Hailey walked over to Kim, concerned now. "Kim, what are you talking about, are you sick? You know you can talk to me about anything."
"Hailey," Kim whispered in a shaking voice, "Hailey, I'm pregnant. I can't do this again! I can't lose this baby, not again!" Sinking to the floor, Kim fell into sobs and Hailey's heart broke for her, so she sat next to Kim, with her arms around her. "Adam doesn't know. How can I do this again? I lost our last baby! How can I do this again?"
Hailey hugged Kim, resting her head against her as she whispered, "It's okay. It'll be okay, Kim. Whatever you decide to do, I'm here."
Kim continued to cling to Hailey as she cried. "Last time, I was selfish. I wanted to be in the field for as long as possible. All I thought about was myself and I lost the baby! How I tell Adam?"
Silence followed as Hailey held Kim as she cried, her heart aching for her friend. The loss Kim and Adam had suffered had been awful, but they had overcome it, married, but it was still a loss. "I'm here for you, no matter what."
Finally, Kim's tears stopped. She stood up, washed her face and pushed her hair behind her ears. She looked suddenly embarrassed as she said, "We should get back in there."
Only Adam and Kevin were in there and Hailey sat down, seeing a text from Jay saying that he was on his way to the district. They always acted as if they had not just spent the night together.
When Jay arrived, he was still dressed in his formal blues and Kim walked straight into his office, asking, "Serge, can I talk to you for a second?"
Looking up from his notes, Jay just nodded and motioned to Kim to sit down. "Of course, Burgess. Is everything ok?" Jay and Kim had worked together for years, and he could tell that there was something troubling her. The way she was standing, the way she was speaking. He was her friend as well as her Sergeant and, if he could help her in any way, he would.
Kim bit her lip and tucked her dark hair behind her ears, before she said, "Er- I'd like to ask to be put on desk duty." She paused, then looked up and she could see Jay's concern. "I'm pregnant and last time, I didn't think about anything apart from what I wanted, about my career and I- we lost the baby. I can't do that again. I can't take that risk again."
She was surprised when Jay's face spread into a smile as he nodded and declared, "Kim, congratulations! You can be on desk duty, up here, for as long as you want. You're one of the best, Kim."
From outside in the bullpen, Hailey could see Jay's smile and she smiled to herself, wondering if, maybe one day, it would be her and Jay having a baby of their own.
