The first person to work out that Kim was pregnant was Kevin and Kim told Adam, not wanting him to be the only one who didn't know. She wished, in a way, that she had kept it private from the rest of the team, but Kevin knew her and Hailey had supported her. Of course, Platt knew that Kim was pregnant, but Kim didn't mind, because she and the other woman were close. Besides Hailey, Platt was the first one to congratulate her.
Friday was a bank holiday, so the team were off for the Friday, as well as being away from the weekend. Secretly, Jay and Hailey had made plans go to go away to the cabin on Friday and spent the whole weekend there. Unlike Kim, Kevin and Adam, they did not share their plans with their friends, not that the two of them spending the weekend together was something that was exclusive to their romantic relationship, outside of their friendship. It was their first weekend away together and, for both of them, it was important, not because they were putting pressure on their relationship, but because the idea of being together for a weekend, uninterrupted, was such a happy one.
Thursday afternoon arrived and the unit were having a day of paperwork and Jay left his office to make himself a coffee. As he was leaving his office, his and Hailey's eyes connected, and they shared one of their secret smiles. As always, it was unnoticed. Kevin was already in there making himself and Adam some coffee. He smiled to himself, remembering when Jay had broken up that fight between him and Adam. The message of that day had been that Jay would not stand any arguments between members of his unit. "Serge, what are your plans for the weekend?"
With a small tilt of the head, Jay just replied, "Going to my grandfather's cabin in Wisconsin. What about you?"
"I'm going to see Vanessa and Jordan." Kevin paused, then added, "It must have been real- I mean, finding out you had a kid."
Jay took a sip of his coffee as he just raised his eyebrows and nodded. "You have no idea. But Avery's great and I'm glad I didn't go my whole life without knowing her. It's good she's moving to Chicago."
Kevin just nodded and Jay nodded at him, before he left the room and went back to his office.
As Kim was passing Hailey's desk, she inquired, "Hailey, do you have any plans for the long weekend?"
Hailey smiled slightly as she replied, "I'm spending the weekend with my boyfriend."
As soon as their shift was over, Hailey went to her house to pack her suitcase for her and Jay's weekend together. Their first weekend away together. The last time they had been out of Chicago was in Springfield, for Kim and Adam's wedding, they had finally admitted their feelings for each other and had spent their first night together. Hailey took her suitcase to Jay's apartment where they spent the night before waking up early to drive to the cabin.
The weekend itself, however, soon descended into a disaster; both Jay and Hailey were stressed and they snapped at each other over the tiniest thing. They were both frustrated. They loved each other and they had wanted this time together, their first weekend away together. On the second night there, after spending the night in the spare room, Hailey asked, "Jay, can we go home, please? This isn't how I wanted this weekend to go and I just want to get out of here now."
Jay knew what she was feeling, because he was feeling the same way. He gave her a small smile and nodded. "Yeah, ok."
When they arrived at Hailey's later, it was clear that they both wanted space form each other, so Hailey rested her head on the door and closed her eyes, before she said, "I'll call you later, ok?"
"Yeah, right on." Jay leaned closer and kissed her gently as he smiled and whispered, "I love you."
With a small smile on her face, Hailey whispered, "I love you, too."
For the first time in ages, Hailey and Jay spent the weekend apart, but it was something they both needed. They worked together and were almost living together. They knew that their relationship was a good one, a loving one, one that each of them was willing to give almost anything to be with the other. They were partners, best friends.
Hailey arrived at the District on Monday morning, and she wasn't surprised to see Jay in his office. She walked into his office and walked over to his desk, carefully, as she told him, "I missed you this weekend. I'm sorry, it was a stupid argument."
Jay shook his head and assured her, "You don't need to apologise. I'm at just as much fault as you are." Jay stood up and closed the gap between them, hugging Hailey close to his chest. "The point is: We had a stupid argument and we worked past it. We're good and we'll always be good."
Smiling, Hailey nodded and rested her head against Jay's as she whispered, "I really missed you. Promise me, the next weekend we have off, we'll be together."
"Oh, that's a promise, Hailey Anne." They beamed at each other, but, because they were at work, they did not kiss. Instead, they held each other's hands briefly, then Hailey sat down at the edge of Jay's desk and they discussed the latest case. No matter what, Jay and Hailey would always be good.
Kevin was the next to arrive and he saw Jay and Hailey together in Jay's office, but, like the rest of the unit, thought nothing of it, because Jay and Hailey had been partners. Best friends and they often spent time together outside of work. But, as he looked closer, there seemed to be something different. Their body language with each other was always open, but this looked different. Kevin couldn't quite put his finger on it. As soon as Jay and Hailey became aware that Kevin was there and watching them, they shared a smile, then Hailey left the office and smiled at Kevin.
As she sat down, she asked, "How was Texas? How are your brother and sister?"
"They're pretty good, thanks." Kevin sat down and turned to face Hailey, before he asked, "What did you do this weekend?"
There was a smile on Hailey's face as she replied, "Well, the plan was to spend the weekend with my boyfriend, but it didn't go so well."
"Where was this?"
"Wisconsin." Hailey paused, before she added, without thinking, "My boyfriend's grandfather had a cabin up there."
For a couple of seconds, Kevin was still. No way! It couldn't be. Jay and Hailey were together. It couldn't be possible, because Kevin worked with them, but he knew how private Jay and Hailey were about their personal lives. He looked at Hailey, looked at Jay's office, then looked back at Hailey. Hailey could see that Kevin had put the pieces together and Jay left his office, coming out to the bullpen to stand next to Hailey. With a smile on his face, Kevin asked, "How long have you guys been together?"
Jay and Hailey glanced at each other, before Jay sat on the edge of Hailey's desk as he replied, in a clipped tone, "Since Kim and Adam's wedding."
"So, you're Hailey's mystery guy- Sorry, private guy? You? Adam won't believe this! Under our noses for months. I can't believe we didn't see it!"
Looking suddenly panicked, Hailey shook her head as she told him, "Kev, no-one knows. Adam doesn't, Kim doesn't, and we'd like to keep it that way, if that's alright with you. We don't want everyone to know, especially with Jay being a Sergeant now."
There was a silence, then Kevin smiled and said, "I'd love to say I'm surprised, but I'm not. I see you guys together and it fits. You look like a couple. Don't worry, I won't say anything. I want to see how long it takes for Kim and Adam to work it out." He paused, then teased, "You guys are perfect for each other, so don't screw it up."
"Thanks, man." Hailey said with a smile, before Jay returned to his office and she sat down at her desk. Now, Will, Platt, Avery and Kevin knew about their relationship, all of whom were bound to secrecy.
