Here's the next chapter! Kevin knows about Jay and Hailey's relationship and it is Kim's turn. Enjoy! :)
True to his word, Kevin didn't tell Kim or Adam about Hailey and Jay's relationship, but he did watch Jay and Hailey more closely and they were very good at separating their personal lives and work life. At work, they just acted like friends, besides a couple of secret smiles they shared when no one was looking. They were far more professional than Kim and Adam. Kevin found it amusing that they had been talking about Hailey's mystery guy for months and he had been right in front of them the whole time. He understood why Jay and Hailey wanted to keep it private, but, as their relationship progressed, he guessed that might be quite hard, especially if they ended up living together and getting married. He didn't know if they had that kind of relationship, but he guessed that they did. Jay and Hailey seemed as if they would be quite serious with their relationship.
In an effort to build on their tentative friendship, Hailey and Kim were now in the habit on having dinner or lunch together every week and Kim needed it. Hailey wanted to support her, remembering how upset Kim had been before and wanting to support her during this pregnancy. Adam was being overprotective of her since she had told him that she was pregnant and that was driving her insane. As always, afterwards, Hailey would go home, where Jay was waiting for her. They needed to make up for time they had lost over the weekend, due to stupid arguments.
"How's Adam taking the pregnancy? Did you guys have a nice long weekend?" Hailey inquired, remembering how upset Kim had been when she had first found out about her pregnancy.
Kim rolled her eyes and finished her mouthful before she answered. With this pregnancy, she was feeling both sick and incredibly hungry. "To be honest, he's being really annoying. Overprotective. I get why, but I'm on desk duty, so there's no more I can do. Jay was great about it when I told him. He's a really good Sergeant." She added with a smile.
With a sarcastic smile, Hailey just said, "Yeah, he has his moments."
"Do you want kids, Hailey?" Kim asked, carefully. She didn't know about Hailey's childhood, but, from the little Hailey said, she gathered the detective had a difficult relationship with her mum. Her dad was never mentioned.
The question caught Hailey off-guard. She was silent, before she decided to reply with honesty: "It's not something I've thought about until recently. I do, but when the time's right."
"So, it's your new boyfriend who's made you think about this? That's great! I know you don't like to talk about your personal life, but I can see he makes you really happy. Whoever he is, he's a lucky guy, and, despite what my husband says, it's your business. I still can't believe you guys met at my wedding- What were the chances?"
Hailey nodded and raised an eyebrow, as she repeated, with a smile, "Yeah, what were the chances? I need to go and wash my hands, I'll be back in a sec." She stood up, with a smile, leaving her mobile on the table.
Kim didn't mean to look at Hailey's phone, but when it lit up with a text, she couldn't help but see it. It was from Jay: 'Your mystery guy's waiting for you at home. We need to make up for lost time, Hailes.'
Kim's eyes widened as she saw the text, before it flashed off the screen. Jay was Hailey's mystery guy? Jay was Hailey's secret boyfriend? They had been together since her wedding. Not only that, but they had also hidden it from Kim, Kevin and Adam since then! Kim had totally missed that. She couldn't believe it. She thought they were just best friends, but then, when she thought about it, Jay and Hailey being together made total sense. They were in a relationship. No wonder they were detectives, they were good at keeping their private lives private and away from work. Like Kim had always said to her husband, it was Hailey's business and Hailey's decision about giving information, but she had never thought that Hailey's boyfriend was Jay, sitting at the same table. She wondered if Hailey and Jay ever joked about the situation when they were alone, especially with Adam always asking Hailey questions about her mystery guy.
Kim could see Hailey returning to the table, so she had a couple of seconds to compose herself. This was Hailey and Jay's secret and she respected that, but she still wanted to have fun with it now that she knew and Hailey didn't know that she knew.
As Hailey sat back down, now with clean hands, she glanced at her phone and Kim could see her trying to hide her smile. She saw that it was the smile she had whenever she smiled at Jay. In a casual voice, Kim asked, "So, are you seeing your guy tonight?"
Looking up from her phone, Hailey just nodded and replied, "I think so."
Kim was the first to leave and, instead of going home, she went to Kevin's. She needed to talk to someone with subtlety and that was not her husband. As soon as she was inside in his house, she said, very seriously, "Kev, I've just discovered something, something huge. I didn't mean to, but I saw it and I can't not see it now. I have to tell someone, but you have to promise me you won't tell anyone." When she saw that Kevin was smirking, she titled her head and asked, "Kev, do you know something?"
Trying to be casual, Kevin replied, "I know something. I found out today, but I don't know if it's the same thing you know." Kevin knew that he wasn't going to win this, so he just said, "Jay and Hailey."
"This is unbelievable! They've been together since my wedding! My wedding! I saw Jay's text to Hailey, making a joke out of the whole mystery guy thing! They've been together for months, right in front of us, and probably been laughing about the whole mystery guy thing for as long as that. Jay and Hailey are together! How did you find out?"
Kevin told her, also adding that Jay and Hailey had asked him not to tell Kim or Adam. They were very private and wanting to keep it quiet. Kim nodded, understanding; Hailey and Jay hid their relationship well. She would give them credit for that. "Are they in love, like, are they serious about each other, or is just a fling?"
Kevin shrugged. "I don't know. I just found out this morning."
Kim shook her head, as she mused, "It's a long time to have a fling if they're not serious. Kev, this is huge! We work with them, together, every day!" Kim left Kevin's, still in shock about Hailey and Jay being together.
When Hailey returned to her house, there were candles on the kitchen table, with a fresh pizza and there was Jay, standing in a suit. He walked over to Hailey and kissed her temple as he murmured, "I thought we could pretend we're in a cabin in Wisconsin, even if we're at work tomorrow."
Hailey smiled and wrapped her arms around Jay's neck and she whispered, "We had an argument, we got through it and here we are. Together, alone, at last." She chuckled softly and whispered, "Let's make up for lost time."
With a smile on his face, Jay rested his head against Hailey's, the kissed her passionately. "Copy that, Detective. I love you."
"I love you, too, Jay." Hailey kissed Jay back passionately and their pizza and candles were forgotten as they made up for their lost time together.
