Kim and Adam's first year wedding anniversary had arrived. Kim was now 6 months pregnant, and she and Adam had been talking about their anniversary plans for weeks. They had been married for a whole year and, in 3 months, they would have a baby. Their first child and they couldn't be happier. Kim and Adam had been trying to decide what to do for their anniversary, having different ideas. Adam wanted to go back to where they had married a year ago and stay there for a couple of nights, but Kim was 6 months pregnant and wanted something more low-key. They included Jay, Hailey, Kevin and Platt in their discussions, but only Kevin and Platt gave their opinions. Platt agreed that week after their wedding anniversary, she would host a party at Molly's, to celebrate their 1-year anniversary. Adam told Jay how he was buying a ring for Kim and he was going to buy something for her to add onto it each year they were married. Jay could not have been less interested if he tried. Kim's gift to Adam was a golfing day with Kevin. She tried to include Jay in this, too, but he told her that he didn't play golf. The married couple had the day off for their anniversary, so both Hailey and Kevin would be without their partners.
Thankfully, for Jay and Hailey, all of this attention of Kim and Adam meant that there was none of them and there was an important factor everyone had forgotten. It was Kim and Adam's wedding anniversary, but it was also Jay and Hailey's anniversary. One year since they had been in Hailey's hotel room, confessed their feelings, kissed for the first time and also the first time they had spent the night together. One of the best nights of both of their lives. It had taken them from being best friends and partners to so much more and, even though they were private, Hailey and Jay couldn't love each other anymore than they did already. A year since they had ignored the interruptions, the questions and just been together. It was their time.
One year today. Jay opened his eyes and smiled at the sight of Hailey asleep, in his arms. "This is the sight that made me so happy this time last year." He whispered. It was 5. Normally, he would get up and make breakfast before their shift, but this morning, he stayed right where he was. He knew that one of Hailey's favourite things was waking up beside him in the morning. Their true anniversary was going to be tonight, like the night they had got together, a year ago. It wasn't going to be fancy like Kim and Adam's anniversary, but it wasn't for anyone else. It was for Jay and Hailey.
Hailey opened her eyes, sleepily and smiled at the sight of Jay. "Good morning." She greeted him with a kiss.
"Morning, Sleeping Beauty." Jay kissed her back as he murmured, "Happy anniversary."
Hailey's blue eyes were glowing with happiness as she murmured back, "Happy anniversary. I love waking up next to you." A grin crossed her face as she asked, running her hands through Jay's hair, "We don't have to be at work for a couple of hours, do we?" Their eyes connected and they both laughed and kissed, holding each other close. Just as they had done on their first morning together.
Their day at 21st District was as normal as it could be, without Kim and Adam there, so, for the day, Hailey and Kevin were partnered. Kevin told Hailey how Adam had been telling him about buying this ring for his anniversary with Kim and he was going to give it to her at the party, at Molly's next week. Kim and Adam had both posted pictures on Facebook for their anniversary. They were very public, the opposite of Jay and Hailey, but the contrast was welcome, because all anyone was talking about was Kim and Adam's wedding anniversary. During the day, Hailey and Jay saw very little of each other, but they didn't matter. Their anniversary was tonight. A year since the night stopped questioning their feelings and just been together.
At the end of their shift, Hailey left Jay working in his office as she made her way to the locker room. She smiled tot herself. She couldn't believe that it had been a year. A year since they had finally confessed their feelings for each other, after years of being partners. They were still partners, best friends, but also so much more. Hailey walked to Jay's office and knocked before entering. Sitting on the edge of his desk, she asked, with a smile, "Pizza at my place?"
Smiling, Jay looked into her eyes and replied, "Sounds perfect." He took hold of one of Hailey's hands and squeezed it. Blue eyes met green, just as they had done on that night, a year ago.
Hailey went back to her house and, in her closet, found the dress she had worn to Kim and Adam's wedding. The dress she had been wearing when she and Jay had finally confessed their feelings. Little did she know that Jay went back to his apartment, finding the same suit he had worn that night. They were celebrating in their own, private way. It was an important night to them and always would be. They had both spend so much time wondering if they should cross that line, but they had and it had been one great year.
Hailey ordered the pizza and Jay walked into her house and his eyes shined as he saw Hailey in the dress and Hailey's beamed when she saw what Jay was wearing. They walked over to each other, meeting halfway with a kiss as Hailey whispered, "I can't believe we had the same idea, but I'm not surprised."
Jay leaned closer to kiss her again, before he smiled and passed her a box. "I hope you like it."
With her blue eyes smiling, Hailey kissed his cheek before she opened it. It was an allice band, very similar to the one she had been wearing that night a year ago. She looked up from it, into Jay's eyes and smiled, "Jay, I love it. Thankyou so much. I got something for you, too."
It was a green tie, like the one he had been wearing a year ago and they kissed before they sat down on Hailey's bed. They were sitting together as they had done in her hotel room a year ago, except this time, they were together. There were no questions, no doubts, no interruptions. Just the two of them. Green eyes met blue and they locked onto each other as Jay rested his head against Hailey's forehead and whispered, "Going to that wedding last year was the best thing I've ever done. It was just right for us, wasn't it?" He paused, then added, "Hailes, you've been there for me, through everything this year. It hasn't been a perfect year, with me becoming a Sargent. And the shooting. My PTSD. Finding about Avery. Your mum wanting to be in your life again, but we're still here. You didn't give up on me."
Hailey nodded, allowing her blonde curls to fall against her face as she smiled softly. "It really has, but I can hardly believe it's been a year. It's been the best year and we're had each other's backs, through everything. You're always there for me, no matter what. You've always got my back." She wrapped her arms around Jay's neck as she whispered, "Jay Halstead, I didn't think I could love someone as much as I love you."
Smiling, Jay murmured, "Me, too, Hailey Upton." His hands went to her waist and their lips met in a passionate kiss as he whispered into her ear, "Happy anniversary." This was their time together and they loved each other more than anything.
A year week later, Kim and Adam had their party at Molly's, celebrating their first year of marriage. Platt arranged it and invited everyone, including Voight. There were speeches and pictures and Kim and Adam shared stories of their wedding anniversary. Then, Adam told everyone to be quiet as he presented Kim with this special ring, with a charm for every year they were married and Kim kissed her husband. Jay was standing with Kevin and Hailey with Tay, but their eyes connected when this happened. It was so different from the two of them.
With all of the people, Jay had to leave Molly's, for some space and Hailey gave him space, but as he always did the same for her and she watched Kim and Adam. They were so happy together and they deserved to be, after all they had been through. Also, their obsession with their anniversary had stopped Adam from obsessing about Hailey and Jay's relationship. Kim, Kevin and Adam seemed to have forgotten that it was their anniversary too, but they wanted it to be that way.
After the party ended, Jay and Hailey made their way back to Jay's apartment, just because it was closer, and, when they arrived, Jay turned on the radio. He turned to face Hailey and took hold of her hand as he told her, "When we came back from the wedding, you said you'd like to dance in my apartment. Alone. We haven't done that in a while."
With their arms around each other for dancing, Jay and Hailey smiled at each other and shared a sweet kiss, before Hailey closed her eyes, rested her head against Jay's chest as they danced together. Jay closed his eyes, too, and nestled his head against Hailey's. They held each other close as they danced.
One year together and, hopefully, many more to follow.
