Two months passed and all of Jay's belongings were now settled into Hailey's house, their house, and Jay's name was now, officially, on the lease. Like always, Jay kept his medals from Afghanistan in a solid, wooden box in the back of a cupboard and Hailey knew that this was how he dealt with it, so she didn't mind. Hailey was naturally messy and Jay naturally tidy, so that was an adjustment, but it was for the best in the house. The difference was noticeably. They kept the second bedroom free, for whenever Avery wanted to come to stay with them, which she had done a couple of times since Jay had officially moved into the house. She had found a dorm room, but she liked spending time with her dad and Hailey.
Kim, Kevin and Adam had been insisting that Hailey and Jay throw a housewarming party, to welcome Jay into the home, officially, but neither Hailey or Jay wanted this. They didn't want that attention and also Jay had practically been living there since Vanessa had left, except now his clothes were in the wardrobe rather than an overnight bag. The other change had been that they drove into work together. Hailey wished that Kim, Kevin and Adam would stop asking questions about if they were going to get married; as far as she was concerned, that was far away in the future, although she knew that both she and Jay saw each other in the rest of their lives. They were partners, in every part of life, and wanted to be for the rest of their lives.
At 3am one morning, Jay and Hailey were woken by Jay's phone ringing, so Jay rubbed his eyes, rolled over and answered it, putting the phone on loudspeaker. It was Adam. "Yeah, Ruze? What's up?"
"Kim and I are on the way to Chicago Med. She's gone into labour. I've already called Kev, but I know Kim would love it if you guys could be here."
Hailey made her way out of bed and threw on a pair of jeans and a big, blue jumper of Jay's and she tied her long, blonde curls into a bun on the top of her head. Jay nodded and replied, "Yeah, we'll be right there. See you soon." Hailey threw him a pair of jeans and a jumper and she grabbed her car keys as they ran downstairs and Jay locked the house before they jumped into Hailey's car and made their way to the hospital.
When Jay and Hailey arrived at the hospital, they went straight to the Maternity Ward, where they found Kevin, Voight, Platt and Kim's sister waiting. Adam was in the labour room with Kim. Hailey and Jay sat down with Kevin, Platt, Nicole and Voight, waiting to hear news about Kim and the baby.
After hours of waiting, Adam came into the Maternity Ward, with a massive grin on his face. He hugged Platt and shook Kevin's hand as he beamed, "We have a daughter. A little girl." There were rounds of congratulations and Jay stood up and shook Adam's hand, patting him on the back and Hailey gave him a hug. "You can go and see her, if you want. Just not too many of you at a time."
Platt, Kevin and Kim's sister went inside first and Adam went with them, leaving Jay and Hailey outside with Voight. Voight shook his head, smiling as he remarked, "I remember the night Justin was born. It changed my whole life." He turned to face Jay and murmured, "You'll be a great dad someday, Jay." Jay said nothing, but Hailey threw him a loving smile. They didn't know if anyone had told Voight that they were together or that they were living together, but it didn't matter. They were partners, no matter what.
Kevin and Kim's sister came back into the sitting room. Nicole had to get back to check on Zoe and Kevin said that Kim was asking for Hailey and Jay. He was going to take Adam for a coffee. Jay could sense Hailey's nerves, because this was a baby. Kim's baby. It was new life, but he gave her a small smile and they walked into the room.
Kim looked very tired, but she was smiling. Her baby girl was lying in her arms, fast asleep and Jay and Hailey walked over to her quietly and stood either side of the bed. Kim didn't take her eyes off the baby as she whispered, "Jay, Hailey, I want you to meet Maria Lexie Burgess- Ruzek." She smiled wistfully at the name. It was in honor of Al and his daughter, Lexie.
Hailey bit back the tears as she replied, "Kim, that's a beautiful name."
Finally taking her eyes off the new-born, Kim asked, "Hailey, would you like to hold her?" She saw the hesitation in her friend's eyes and assured her, "It's okay."
Hailey nodded and Kim eased Maria into her arms. The baby moved for a couple of seconds, but then settled into Hailey's arms. All that Hailey could do was to stare in awe at the new-born baby and her blue eyes filled with tears. Jay's eyes were fixed on the sight of Hailey with the baby. She looked so natural. Just like when Kim had told Hailey she was pregnant, he imaged that Hailey was holding their baby. Hailey was so focused on the baby that she didn't see how Jay was looking at her, but Kim did and she smiled to herself.
After a while, Hailey gave the baby back to Kim and she and Jay said congratulations again before they left the hospital and went home. In the bedroom, they slipped out of their clothes and went into bed. Jay had seen how quiet Hailey was, so he asked, "Hailes, you ok?"
Releasing her hair from its messy bun, Hailey nodded and smiled. "Yeah, I was just thinking about what Voight said earlier. You will be a good dad, one day." She turned to face Jay and kissed him as she whispered, "We'll have beautiful babies together, when we're ready."
"Of course we will." Jay whispered back, before he confessed, "I couldn't take my eyes off you with Maria. I imagined you were holding our baby."
"The idea of having kids is scary, but I've never even thought about having kids until you, Jay." Hailey smiled as she whispered, "I think you and me could do it, together."
Jay pressed a finger against Hailey's cheek and his green eyes met her blue ones as he replied, "Of course we could. You'll be a great mum, when we're ready." He closed his eyes and kissed her forehead, before they lay down in bed together, with their arms around each other.
