Hailey didn't know what she had meant when she had talked about her next chapter of life with Jay, a better chapter, but she had meant every single word of it. That night, when they had been lying together, it had made Jay think. A new, better chapter of their lives together. He looked at Hailey who was asleep beside him and he smiled. Jay knew what he wanted to do and he wanted it more than anything in the world. Jay knew that Hailey didn't like surprises, but, true to form, he didn't want to do anything fancy like Kim and Adam. He wanted it to just be for them, for the next chapter of their lives, together. He didn't want to buy a ring and have it be the wrong one, so he decided that he and Hailey could choose the ring together, after he had asked her.
Meanwhile, Hailey was out for dinner with Kim. It was in the courthouse, and it was being decorated for a wedding. As ever, Kim was thinking about other people, as she smiled. "Hailey, this place is beautiful! Wouldn't this be a great place to get married? You and Jay should come here and have a look."
Hailey shrugged as she smiled. "I don't know, Jay and I have only just moved in together and we're happy. I want to have a new, better chapter with him, but I didn't mean marriage."
Kim frowned as she asked, carefully, "Do you think Jay isn't ready for marriage? Is there something holding him back?"
"No, there isn't, but he has been married before. I've never even thought about marriage before I was with Jay, so I'm not in that place either." Hailey smiled, before she added, "We're just so happy with where we are right now, Kim. It's the start of a new, better chapter of my life for me and Jay. I'm sure of it."
"You've been partners for years. You know each other so well." Kim walked over to one of the managers and asked, "Excuse me, how long is the waiting list to get married here? My friend and I were just saying it's so beautiful and it would be amazing to get married here. Hailey, the waiting list is a year! You could put your name down for it now."
Hailey smiled fondly at the other woman, before she replied, "Kim, Jay and I aren't even engaged. We haven't talked about getting married."
"But I've seen the way you look at Maria and I've seen how Jay looks at you when you're holding Maria. Plus, you're living together now, so it's got to be close." Kim realised that she had pushed it too far, so she dropped the subject, not wanting Hailey to become defensive. She did, however, put Hailey's name down on the waiting list when Hailey went to the toilet.
Hailey closed the door and sighed as she shrugged off her coat. "Why can't people stop being so noisy about our private lives?"
Jay smirked as asked, "Are you talking about Kim? Did she get on your nerves?" He had had a takeaway pizza and had been happy to have time on his own. He was, by nature, an introvert, so he liked some time alone, even time away from Hailey and Hailey was the same way. He stood up and wiped his fingers as he said, with a smirk, "By the way, the courthouse called. They said they can fit our wedding in next year."
Closing her eyes in humiliation, Hailey ran her hands across her face as she walked over to Jay. She looked into Jay's eyes and she was glad to see that he was laughing at this. She shook her head and laughed softly as she said, "That was Kim's idea. She means well, but I did tell her to leave it alone." She paused as she added, "I'm sorry, Jay, I didn't want to make you feel uncomfortable."
Jay chuckled and reached out for Hailey's chin as he smiled. "I didn't. I think it's hilarious, Hailes. We're not ready for marriage yet, are we?"
For a second, Hailey considered saying yes. She wanted to with Jay for the rest of her life and she wanted her and Jay to have a new chapter, a better chapter, together. Jay was the one for her. Her blue eyes connected with Jay's and she shook that thought from her head as she smiled as she whispered, "No, we're not." She closed the gap between the two of them and kissed Jay, putting her arms around her neck.
Jay rested his head against hers and kissed her as he put his arms around her waist. Their kiss broke and he put his hand against her cheek as he smiled, "Ignore what Kim says. Or Adam. We're good, Hailey."
"We are, partner." Hailey smiled, looking into Jay's eyes. "And I can't wait for this new chapter of our lives, for us to be together."
They held each other close and Jay smiled to himself. He had seen a ring which he thought that Hailey would love, because it was plain and simple, but also beautiful. It was their time and Jay wanted it to be just right.
