Chapter 50: Dance all my dances with you.
The next morning, Hailey and Jay went to buy an engagement ring and Hailey picked the one that Jay had thought she would like. Jay placed it onto Hailey's finger and their eyes connected, with so much love. It was perfect. Over breakfast, they talked about the years of their partnership, about all of the events and conversations, good and bad, that had led them to where they were now, together. All of what had happened had led to them being together and that was what mattered. They were a team and always would be, in all parts of their lives. "I told you we were good together. I really should call Vanessa and thank her. It was because of her I realised I was in love you." Hailey joked as they ate their breakfast and admired her ring. Not that ring itself, but what is represented. The promise of their future together.
Hailey didn't want to wear her engagement ring at work. As far as she and Jay were concerned, no-one else needed to know that they were engaged. It was for them, for their commitment and promise to each other of that they were going to be married.
After their early breakfast, they went back the house and Hailey took off the ring and placed it in a safe place, on her nightstand. Jay walked over to her and kissed her as they looked at the ring. Hailey moaned and said, "I'd love to stay here all day, but we've got to go to work." She found her gun and jacket and turned back to Jay. With a smile, she asked, "You ready, Sarge?"
Jay walked over to her and kissed her temple as he smiled and nodded. "Yes, Detective." He paused, then added, "Let's go, partner."
At the District, the couple shared a secret smile before Jay went to his office and Hailey sat her desk, finding paperwork, and she waited for Adam to arrive. He may have been her partner now, but she knew who her true partner was. Adam arrived, telling Hailey all about Kim and Maria. He was so happy in the new role of fatherhood and, as he was talking, Hailey smiled to herself, thinking that, after she and Jay got married, they would have children of their own and Jay would be the one to be talking about their baby. When Kim and Adam had been engaged, both times, they had made it known and had parties, but neither Jay or Hailey wanted that. They would tell their friends, but when they were ready. Kim and Adam were still excited about the fact that they were living together.
When Jay left his office to have some coffee, Adam started telling him all about the baby and Jay listened, happily. He watched how Hailey smiled at the mention of the baby and he thought the same thing she was. Hailey was his fiancée. His fiancée. She was going to be his wife, his partner, and, he hoped, in a couple of years, the mother of their children. The promise of the future they were going to have, the new and best chapter of their lives, together. They had no control over the past, but they did, over their lives together. As usual, Adam remained oblivious, but he was so happy, talking about his wife and baby girl.
Just as Kevin arrived, the superintendent arrived and walked straight to Jay's office. Hailey shared a confused look with Kevin and Adam, wondering why she was there to see Jay. Through the window, she could see how Jay was standing. With his hands behind his back, another habit from the Army. Hailey secretly smiled. He was her fiancée, the man she was going to marry.
The Superintend stepped out of Jay's office and offered her formal invitation to a fundraiser in two nights' time. They would be required to wear their uniforms, but they would be off duty. An extra night off and it was to support the families of those who had lost those in the line of duty. Adam was the first to speak, making it clear he wasn't sure if his wife would be able to attend because of their new-born baby girl. Hailey wished that she had an excuse. She wanted to be at home, with Jay, but she knew that, as the Sergeant, he would be expected to go. She glanced down at her ring finger, where her engagement ring had been earlier and smiled. It was where the ring would sit when she and Jay were ready. Her future with Jay was bright and full of love.
The Superintend left and Jay walked out of his office and he asked Hailey, Kevin and Adam if they would be able to attend the fundraiser. It was clear that he was going. Not only was it a good cause, but it was a chance to show Superintend that they were a good unit, united. Both Adam and Kevin told Jay they would be there and Hailey did the same. Platt was also offered an invitation and accepted it and one was extended to Kim, so she found a babysitter for Maria. She was so excited about doing something that had nothing to do with her baby.
"I hate these uniforms." Hailey cursed as she put on her uniform in front of her bedroom mirror, the night of the fundraiser.
Jay smiled, wearing his own formal blues, as he remarked, "Look on the bright side: We don't have to wear them every day." He paused, then added, "I think you look great in it, though."
Before he had a chance to say anything, Hailey turned around and met his lips with a passionate kiss as she smiled. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she asked, "Is that so, fiancée?"
Jay smiled before he broke away from Hailey to straighten his tie. "Yeah, it is."
They had called Avery earlier that day and told her their news and Avery had been so happy that they were engaged. She had asked all about their plans for their wedding, but, in truth, they didn't have any. They were just happy being engaged. Avery insisted on going out to dinner with Jay and Hailey, to celebrate, and, whilst neither of them wanted the fuss, it was important to Avery, so they accepted. The two of them, Will, Avery, Gail and Danny.
Hailey braided her blonde curls and tied it up on top of her head and she straightened up her uniform and smiled at her engagement ring, before she took it off and put it in its safe place. Upton. Halstead. The different surnames on their nametags. Hailey looked at them and tilted her head, as she smiled. Their names, their lives, were going to be joined and she knew that, whilst she wanted to keep her name for work, she wanted to take Jay's surname and she had told Jay this, even though they had only been engaged for a couple of days and Jay had been thrilled by the idea.
"You ok?" Jay asked carefully, seeing that Hailey was staring into the mirror.
Smiling, Hailey replied, "Yes, I am, I'm just so happy that we're going to get married. It'll be our new chapter together and we can create the life we want together and I'll have you." She added, with a smile as she looked into Jay's eyes.
Jay kissed her sweetly before he said, "That's what I was thinking. Come on, we don't want to be late." They shared another sweet kiss, before they left the house and went to Jay's truck.
The fundraiser was being held in an old, beautiful ball room. Hailey made her way over to the table with Kim, Adam and Kevin whilst Jay went to say hello to the Superintendent. Kevin and Adam were enjoying the perks of not being on duty and Kim was so happy to be out of the house. "I was so glad when Nicole said she could take the baby," Kim told Hailey, with a smile, "I feel as if I haven't had any time since she was born."
Hailey offered her a small smile as she said, "If it would help, Jay and I could take her for a night. You know how much we love Maria."
Kim took a sip of water and asked, "You'd really do that?" Kim paused, then added, in a serious tone, "I'm sorry I put your name down on that list at the courthouse. I overstepped and I'm sorry if it caused any problems between you and Jay."
For a couple of seconds, Hailey was quiet before she shook her head and smiled. "You have nothing to worry about, Kim. You listened to me and that's the main thing."
"But I'm still sorry. I just want you and Jay to be happy together. To have the happy ending Adam and I are getting now."
With Kim's words, Hailey's eyes found Jay as he was talking to some of the other Sergeants who were attending the fundraiser. In a second, Jay's eyes connected with Hailey's and he smiled at her, warmly, before turning back to the other person. Kim saw the look they exchanged, and she smiled to herself. As far as she and Kevin were concerned, Jay and Hailey were perfect together. Hailey turned back to her friend and told her, "Kim, you have nothing to worry about. Jay and I are good."
The fundraiser started and Jay was on a table with Hailey, Kim, Kevin and Adam. As soon as all of the speeches were done, the music started to play and the dancing started and, instantly, Kim and Adam stood up and walked over to the dance floor, whilst Hailey stayed where she was, sipping her wine, and Jay talked to Kevin. They enjoyed dancing together, but in the privacy of their own home, rather than in public. The only time they had danced together, in public, had been Kim and Adam's wedding, the night they had finally crossed the line from best friends to so much more. Eventually, Adam called them over to the dance floor, like he had done that night, so Jay and Hailey gave in.
They stood together and danced and, like always, Hailey was impressed with Jay's dancing skills. His head was resting just above hers and she smiled and they danced together. Hailey looked up at Jay as he told her, in a very low voice so that no one else could hear, "The first time I danced with you, I realised something. I want to dance all my dances with you." He kissed the top of Hailey's head and smiled and his finger went to Hailey's ring finger.
Hailey looked down at it and then back at Jay, as they continued to dance. "You're the only guy I've ever wanted to dance with, Jay. That night, I said I didn't want dancing at my wedding." She smiled, as she continued, "But I would love it if, after we get married, we could dance at home, together. In private, just us two."
With a loving smile on his lips, Jay just said, "That can be arranged, Hailey Upton." They shared a smile and Hailey rested her head against Jay's chest, with her arms around his neck. He rested his head against the top of hers and they moved together and Hailey closed her eyes, wanting to savour this moment forever, and Jay closed his eyes, wanting the same thing.
