At 4 in the morning, Jay and Hailey were woken by the sound of Jay's phone ringing, so Hailey slipped herself out of Jay's arms as he moved across the bed to answer his phone. It was the Superintend. There had been a string of rather brutal killings and she wanted Intelligence to take the case, so Jay said he would alert the rest of the team and they would meet the Superintend at the very first crime scene.

There was no time for showers, so both Jay and Hailey quickly changed into jeans and hoodies and Hailey put her hair up in a ponytail. Before they forgot, they both took off their wedding rings and put them around their necks and Hailey left her engagement ring in a safe place, before they left the house for Jay's truck and, on the way, he called Kevin and Adam. Kim was due back from maternity in a couple of weeks. Hailey wasn't sure how her friend would adjust with being away from Maria for that long.

"What have we got, ma'am?" Jay instantly asked as he left his truck and Hailey followed him, over to the Superintend. The Superintend briefed Jay and Hailey as they waited for Kevin and Adam to arrive. They were going to go over each crime scene and go back to the district to go over the case and, hopefully, to find a lead. "Atwater, you and I are going to partner up for this. You and I will go over this scene. Upton, Ruzek, you can take the second scene. Go over them, take down every piece of detail and then we'll meet back at 21st District. Let's go." His command as a leader was natural, due to his time in the Army, and Hailey smiled to herself. He was a great Sergeant. He was good at it, but she knew that it still caused him stress and anxiety. His anxiety would always be there, like the depression, as an effect of the PTSD but he had really handled it better than he had before they had been partners and Hailey was proud of him. It suddenly occurred to her that this was their first shift back at work since they had married. Their first shift as a married couple.

"I've gotta give it to Jay. He's a good leader. He has a room, and he takes control of it. I can't believe I doubted him." Adam confessed as they were driving. "Kim was hoping you'd come by on your days off. She would've liked the company and she says you're great with Maria."

Hailey smiled and titled her head. "Kim and I had dinner before we had a couple of days off."

Adam paused and cleared his throat. "Yeah. Kim told me she was worried about you. She was asking about your wedding and you had a panic attack. How are you feeling now? Kim felt really bad. She wanted me to check how you're feeling now."

"What happened wasn't Kim's fault, Ruze. Make sure you tell her that, defiantly."

Just nodding, Adam said, "I will. Will do. But everything's good now. Kim said she thought you were stressed about the wedding, but you and Jay seem pretty relaxed now. Is it all sorted? I know how stressed Kim got about our wedding. It's a lot of pressure."

Hailey tilted her head and a small smile spread across her lips as she replied, "Everything's good and Kim doesn't need to worry. I'm good and Jay and I are good."

Adam smiled. "Copy that. Kim's very excited about being your bridesmaid. Imagine: You and Jay at work, with the same name. Two Halsteads on the team."

Smiling, Hailey just said, "Yeah, that would be something."

Back at the District, the two sets of partners reviewed the two crime scenes. There was a pressure on this case, but Jay told them to take it as carefully and methodically as with any other case and Hailey was proud of how calm he was, even in stressful situations. It was another good habit he had learnt from his time in the Army.

Hailey went to her locker to find her phone charger and she was surprised to see that Platt followed her. It was still dark outside. The older woman sat down on one of the benches, so Hailey took that as an invitation to do the same. Platt gave her a small smile and said, "I just wanted to check on you, because Kim said you had a panic attack last week, when you were having dinner. She said she asked you if your parents would be at your wedding and you started having a panic attack." There was no question there, but Hailey could see the concern the older woman had. "I meant what I said: I really do care about what happens to you and Jay. You guys are the best team I've seen for a long time, at your work and in personal lives. Hailey, I want to be sure you're okay."

Smiling at the kindness of the desk sergeant, Hailey nodded. "Yeah, I'm good now and I appreciate it, Trudy." Hailey paused, before she continued, "Kim asking that question- brought back memoires of my childhood and it scared me. I have a relationship with my mum now, but not my dad and it's complicated. It was all too much, but Jay was there for me and going away for a couple of days was just what we needed. What I needed to have some space."

Platt nodded and stated, "So, you and Jay got married." It wasn't a question and the look on Hailey's face made her smile. "Hailey, I'm insulted that you didn't think I'd notice, and I know you and Halstead. You went away together and you decided to get married. It fits." She smiled and shrugged. "Can I see your ring?"

With a smile of love, Hailey showed Platt her wedding ring. "We actually have pictures from outside the church. I'll put it on my desk tomorrow."

"I can't wait to see that. You haven't told anyone, have you?"

Hailey shrugged. "I met up with my mum when we got back and told her. She understood and Jay's told Will and Avery. We're not ready for people to know and Kim was so excited about being a bridesmaid."

Platt stood up. "Well, when you finally tell everyone, I'll throw you a party at Molly's. Does that mean Intelligence has two Detective Halsteads now?"

Tilting her head, Hailey smiled and shook her head. "No, Serg, I'm still Detective Upton at work."

With a smile, Platt nodded. "Good to know."

At the end of the shift, the Superintend came to have an update on the case and Jay provided her with one and she told the team to go home and get some rest. They could start afresh in the morning. Jay stayed in his office to do paperwork and Hailey leaned on his desk and smiled, "I'll see you at home, Sergeant Halstead."

With a smirk, Jay replied, "Yeah, you will, Detective Upton." Their eyes connected and Hailey reached out for where Jay's dog tags were, where his wedding ring was and she smiled, before she stood up and left the room, closing the door behind her.

An hour later, there was another knock-on Jay's door. This time it was Platt. "Chuckles, Kim's here to see you. By the way, congratulations. You and Goldilocks will have a great life together."

As soon as Kim entered the office, Jay could see her tension, so he left his seat and lent against his desk. "Burgess, take your time. I'm in no rush."

Running her hands through her hair, Kim sighed and said, "I was wondering if it would be possible for me to remain on desk duty, permanently. Sarge, I love this job, but, when I'm with Maria, the thought of-of not being there to watch her grow up is too much. I know that staying in this unit might be a lot to ask, but guys have become my family. I'm sorry, Jay."

Jay offered her a small smile as he told her, "Burgess, you don't have to apologise and I told you it could be the case, if you wanted, before Maria was born. I'll talk to Platt and Atwater and we'll see what we can sort out." There was a smile on Kim's face as she nodded, before she asked, "Hey, how's Hailey? Last time I saw her she wasn't in the best way."

At the mention of his wife's name, Jay smiled and replied, "Hailey's good, thanks, Kim. And thanks for looking after her last week. It meant a lot to me."

After being at work for over 15 hours, Jay finally returned home and, taking off his jacket, he headed straight for the bedroom he shared with Hailey. She was curled up in her PJs under the covers, but she was awake. She sat up and kissed him. "I'm glad you're home. Do you realise that was our first shift as a married couple?"

Jay changed into his PJs and crawled into bed next to Hailey, wrapping his arms around her as he lay down next to her. "Yeah, I did. You can put that picture on your desk tomorrow." He rested his head against hers and asked, in a softer voice, "Where's your ring?"

Hailey laughed softly. "I wanted you to put it on for me, Mr. Halstead." Hailey released her wedding ring from her neckless and passed it to Jay and he placed it on her finger, just as he had done when they had married.

Resting his head against hers, Jay whispered, "It's your turn now, Mrs. Halstead." Jay pulled out his dog tags and his fingers traced them for a while and Hailey could see that he was thinking about the memories they contained, before he smiled at her and she detached his wedding ring from them.

With a smile, she placed the ring onto his finger and whispered back, "It's a perfect fit. Till death do us part, Jay Halstead."

"And our future, Hailey Halstead." Their eyes connected and they shared a kiss before they settled down into their bed and slept, as husband and wife.
