Chapter 62: A long year.
A whole year passed. 12 months. 365 days.
Kim and Adam's daughter, Maria Lexie, was now 2 years old and Kim and Kevin had settled into their role as detectives. Kim was also pregnant with her and Adam's second child, Maria's brother or sister. Secretly, Adam wanted another girl. He wanted another daughter, but he knew that Kim wanted a boy. A daughter and a son. One of each, as far as Kim was concerned. The whole unit was excited about Kim and Adam having another baby, especially after everything they had been through with Kim's miscarriage, years ago. Voight and Platt already treated Maria as their adopted granddaughter, and they intended on doing the same with the new baby. Like Maria, Kim and Adam's unborn child had been a surprise.
For the past year, Jay and Hailey had been trying to conceive a baby, but it had not happened yet and, with every passing month, it was getting harder to pretend as if there wasn't something wrong. Neither of them had not told anyone, even their families, that they were trying to have a baby, in case it didn't happen straight away, but neither of them had thought that they would be trying for a year with no result. Hailey hadn't even told her mum, not wanting her to be disappointed and, now, she was glad of that decision. Naturally, it was affecting her and Jay, but they kept trying, hoping that it would happen. It had happened for Kim and Adam, so why not them?
It was early in the morning. Jay had been in his office for a couple of hours before Hailey and Adam arrived. It was a paperwork day. Adam came out of the breakroom and passed a cup of coffee to Hailey. "Here. Looks like you could use it." There were dark circles under Hailey's eyes and she looked so tired. Jay did too, but that wasn't as unusual, because of his PTSD, but it was noticeable for Hailey. Jay and Hailey had each other and they were holding onto that, for the love they had for each other.
Hailey shook her head. "No coffee, thanks, Ruze."
Adam frowned. "No coffee? What have you done to my partner?" He asked, joking. He shrugged and sat down, saying carefully, "You're looking very tired lately. Circles under your eyes- Are you sure you're OK?"
Giving her partner a small smile, Hailey replied, "Yeah, I'm good, I just need more sleep."
"You think you're tired now! Just wait til you and Jay have kids! Maria's 2 and still doesn't sleep through the night and we've got a new baby coming! Life is so crazy!" Hailey's eyes drifted to the glass of Jay's office. She remembered Kim going in there to tell Jay that she was pregnant with Maria. Now Maria was 2. Hailey had been with Kim when she had told her about both of her pregnancies.
Kim and Kevin walked into the bullpen, after spending the morning with the crime lab and now, they were back to do paperwork. As soon as Adam saw his wife, he walked over to her and kissed her bump. "How's our little bean?"
Kim laughed and replied, "He or she is fine, you idiot! Maria wants a baby sister."
"I think we should place bets. I bet another girl." Kevin remarked, grinning, before he asked, "What do you think, Upton?"
Before Hailey could reply, Adam jumped in, telling his wife, "Did you know Hailey isn't drinking coffee anymore? How times change!" Kevin shrugged and returned to his work, but Kim clocked this information and Hailey knew that she would and she internally sighed.
Much to Hailey's joy, Jay walked out of his office, saying, "There's been a shooting. Burgess, Atwater- track down everything on social media. Upton, Ruzek- you're with me. Let's go." He walked through the bullpen and Hailey grabbed her coat and followed him, with Adam in toe.
In the car, Adam was talking about something, but Hailey wasn't listening. She was remembering last month, when her period had arrived. She had cried for hours and Jay had held her, rocking her back and forth. Hailey had never thought that the sight of her own period, the sight of her and Jay not conceiving a child, would be so heart-breaking. At first, a year ago, trying had been fun, but it wasn't like that anymore. With each month that passed with no pregnancy, it was becoming harder and harder to feel positive and Hailey knew that Jay felt the same way. It was heart-breaking for him, too, but he was being strong, for her. Hailey had cut out coffee and both she and Jay no longer had alcohol, as a way of trying to improve their chances of conceiving a baby. Hailey had started to map her ovulation on the calendar in the kitchen. It had been a long year, but they hoped that, somehow, it would change soon and they would have their baby.
After seeing the crime scene, Jay, Hailey and Adam returned to the 21st District, where Kim and Kevin had already collected information on social media and had used it to build a timeline of events. As they were setting up the board and Jay was sitting on the edge of Hailey's desk, reading some of the social media presence, Kim, who was setting up the board with Hailey, asked, with a smile, "Hailey, is there something you want to tell us?"
Shaking her head, Hailey sighed internally. Why wouldn't Kim let it go? She focused on the board. "No, there isn't."
Kevin raised his eyebrows and asked, "Is this because of the coffee comment Adam made? Kim, you're like an elephant. You don't forget anything. Really, you don't."
"I didn't know there was anything in the coffee." Adam shrugged.
"So, Hailey, Jay, is there something you want to tell us?"
Jay's eyes connected with Hailey's and he could see the pain in her eyes, but she hit it well and she just replied, "No, I've just cut out coffee because I drank far too much of it before. That's all."
Kim stroked her pregnancy bump as she smiled and asked, "You're not trying to have a baby? You're great with Maria."
A lump formed in Hailey's throat and she was finding it hard to breath. Jay stood up and joked, "No. We want to see how your second baby comes out first." He forced a smile and this made Kim and Adam laugh. His eyes connected with Hailey's and he gave her a small smile, before he asked, "Ruzek, Atwater, how about you take us through this board?"
Hailey left the board and sat down on her chair. Jay was standing next to her and she was glad that he was there. He was her partner, her best friend. Her husband.
After their shift, the unit went to Molly's and Hailey went to the bar to order non-alcoholic drink and took it back to the table. She sat herself next to Kim. Jay was just drinking water, but, unlike Hailey, no one would question that. Kevin finished his drink and declared, "So, I think we should all take bets on Baby Ruzek-Burgess, no. 2. I think it's another girl. Adam, what do you think?"
Adam laughed and replied, "Another girl definitely."
"Another little girl Daddy, Voight and Platt can spoil." Kim joked and laughed, before she said, "Call it a mother's instinct, but I think it's a boy. There's just something that tells me. Hailey, what do you think?"
Taking a sip of her drink, Hailey shrugged. "I don't know. It's a 50-50 chance."
"What's this bet I'm missing?" Came a voice from behind Hailey and Kim. It was Vanessa and Hailey jumped up and pulled her into a hug and everyone else greeted her and she immediately congratulated Kim on her pregnancy and Kim told her that she already had a 2-year-old at home. Vanessa sat between Hailey and Kim and turned to her former housemate. With a smile, Vanessa said, "Hailey, do you remember what you promised me before I left? You said you'd let me meet your mystery guy, so it's time for me to meet him."
Hailey and Jay shared a smile, before Hailey tilted her head and replied, "Well, V, he's sitting across the table from me. Vanessa, meet Jay Halstead, my husband."
Vanessa looked between Jay and Hailey, with a huge smile on her face, before she hugged Hailey. "I knew you guys liked each other and that's why you were so secretive about it. Hang on- your husband? You guys got married? When?"
Jay smiled and replied, "A year ago. And don't feel offended, because no-one else was there either."
"You eloped?" Vanessa asked, taking in all of this information, with a wide smile on her face, watching the interaction between Hailey and Jay. She had seen this years ago, but she couldn't believe that they were married.
With a smile, Hailey nodded and replied, "It's a long story and we're living in the house we shared, too. We have a spare room, but it's mostly for Jay's daughter, but she's at university, so she wouldn't mind you staying there." She passed Vanessa a spare key. "I'm going to head out. Have a good night, guys." She left the table and Jay left with her.
Vanessa stared after them as she exclaimed, "Wow, I've missed so much! Kim, can you fill me in, on everything? And, I mean, everything!"
As soon as their front door was closed, Hailey shrugged off her jacket and looked at the calendar. It wasn't time to try this month, yet. She lay down on their bed and Jay lay down next to her. "I'm sorry, Hailes. I wish they wouldn't ask those questions."
Hailey nodded, sadly and she murmured, "Me, too." She paused, then added, "I was thinking about last month, when I was crying on the bathroom floor and you were holding me. I think I was there for hours. It's been a year that we've been trying and still nothing. Still no pregnancy."
Sighing, Jay wiped away a tear that had fallen from Hailey's eyes and he whispered, "I know. It's hard, especially when it was so easy for Kim and Adam. They weren't even trying." He cupped Hailey's face with his hands and looked into her eyes. "But we will get there, Hailey. We will. I love you."
Hailey kissed Jay and smiled at him softly. "I love you, too, Jay, so much, but it's getting harder and harder to be positive and I'm so tired."
In a rough, emotional voice, Jay nodded, "I know, Hailes. I am, too." He kissed her forehead and suggested, "Get some rest." He opened his arms and Hailey fell into them and fell asleep there. They were so tired, so emotionally drained, that they had forgotten to move their wedding rings from around their necks to their place on their fingers. As they slept, with Hailey asleep in Jay's arms, they both wished that it would happen. They would have their baby.
