The unit found the murderers responsible for murdering the children. None of them were brought in alive and they were all taken down by a sniper rifle from the opposite roof top. When it came to crimes against children, Jay had no mercy. It was because of Ally's brother and Afghanistan and the little girl, Morgan and also his natural instinct to protect those who were more vulnerable, one of his driving forces behind enlisting in the Army in the first place. The case brought back those memories for Jay, so he went to see a therapist more than he normally did. Hailey was proud of him. She was always proud of him, but the way in which he had handled the case, such an awful case, had made her so proud.

Hailey and Jay were still taking a break from trying to conceive a baby and they were both feeling far less stressed for it, but they were both secretly hoping that it would happen when they weren't trying, just like it had for Kim and Adam. They were afforded no such luck. Hailey was glad that Jay had suggested that they took a break after the phantom pregnancy, because she had needed it and so had he. They had both been so tired and stressed. It was allowing them to spend time together and enjoy their time together, without the pressure of trying to conceive a baby. Their stress levels were down and this was clear to everyone and both Jay and Hailey were far happier because they were in a happier place. Every month wasn't marked by ovulation, but, in the back of their minds, it was what they both wanted, more than anything and they were still recovering from the heartbreak of the phantom pregnancy. They had their promise that they had made after it had happened; that they would, somehow, someday, have their baby and they had each other, no matter what.

It was 1 in the morning when Hailey's phone started to ring. It was charging on the table in their room, so she had to leave their bed to answer it. It was Kim. She was 9 months pregnant, so Hailey knew that this call could only mean one thing and she was glad to see that Jay was already awake. "Kim, it's me." She put her mobile on loudspeaker.

"Hey, Hailey. I've just started to go into labour. We're going to go to the hospital. I was wondering- Would you and Jay mind going to our place and watching Maria? We don't really want to take her to the hospital."

Hailey looked at Jay for confirmation, who nodded and left their bed to find a pair of jeans and a hoodie. Hailey nodded. "We'll be there in a few mins. Good luck, Kim."

"Thanks, Hailey. I'll have someone call you after I've given birth."

Hailey hung up the phone and found a pair of jeans and one of Jay's old jumpers before they went downstairs and left the house, driving to Kim and Adam's house. Hailey wondered why Kim hadn't asked Platt or Voight to look after Maria, but she knew that Kim trusted her and Jay and Maria adored them. Hailey couldn't believe that Kim and Adam were about to have their second child. It seemed like only yesterday that Maria had been born.

Maria was awake and very excited to see Hailey and Jay. She knew that her baby brother or sister was going to be born and she was very excited. Kim and Adam wanted the gender to be a surprise, but Maria wanted a baby brother. Adam wanted another girl. Jay and Hailey hadn't taken bets on the gender of the baby, but everyone else had, even Platt and Voight. "How about we sit down and I read you a story, Maria?" Jay asked, kneeling in front of Maria.

The little girl put her arms around Jay's neck and cried, "Please, Uncle Jay! And Auntie Hailey!" On the sofa, she snuggled onto Jay's knee and asked, "Did you know Mummy's having a baby?" She turned her head to Hailey and asked, innocently, "When are you having a baby, Auntie Hailey?"

Hailey forced a smile and replied, "Uncle Jay and I might not have kids, Maria." She paused, then asked, "Would you like some milk?" As she walked away, she could feel Jay's eyes on her. The question had made Jay's heart ache; it had made him think about what he and Hailey had been trying not to think about. Starting to try to have a baby again. After what had happened with the phantom pregnancy, Jay wanted to wait until Hailey was ready to start trying again.

After about an hour, the excitement became too much for the two-year-old and Maria fell asleep on Jay's lap so he carried her up to her room. Her room was a princess room. There was little Hailey found more attractive than seeing her husband with Kim and Adam's daughter and it made her smile.

Jay sat on the sofa next to her and asked, carefully, "Are you ok? I saw your eyes when she asked you."

Hailey shrugged and replied, "Yeah, I'm fine. She's 2." She smiled slightly as she whispered, "You're really good with her, Jay, and, to be honest, I find it really sexy." She titled her head and smiled.

Jay's eyes connected with hers and he smiled, then they sat in comfortable silence, both waiting to hear the news of the birth of Kim and Adam's second child, Maria's baby brother or sister. Jay and Hailey hadn't even been married when Maria had been born. In a soft voice, Jay asked, "Do you remember Maria's first birthday?"

Pulling her legs up the sofa, Hailey curled up on the sofa as she faced her husband. Her blonde curls were messy, but she didn't mind. It wasn't a usual day. With a small smile, Hailey nodded, "Yeah, I remember, we took turns in holding her." She swallowed a lump in her throat as she continued, "It was the night we decided to try to have a baby. Our own baby. I wanted a baby with you." There was a silence before she added, "I remember when Maria was born, Voight said you'd be a good dad, one day, when we were ready." Hailey tilted her head and whispered, sadly, "It isn't that simple, though, is it?"

Jay hesitated for a couple of seconds, before he asked, concerned, "You don't regret that we started trying, do you?"

"No, I didn't, trust me. When we started, it was so much fun!" Hailey laughed.

Jay kissed her forehead and murmured, "I'm sorry it's been so hard, Hailes. But our break over the past months has been nice. We needed it."

"Yeah, it has." Hailey's eyes connected with Jay's and she closed the gap between the two of them and they shared a sweet kiss.

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of Hailey's phone ringing. It was Kim, so Hailey sat up quickly and answered it. She could hear Adam's voice in the background. "Hailey, can you and Jay bring Maria to the hospital? We want her to meet the baby!" Jay had already left the sofa to go upstairs to wake up Maria and Hailey smiled at his enthusiasm.

Hailey smiled as she replied, "Of course, Kim. How are you? How's the baby?"

"Perfect. I can't wait for you guys to get here. And, Hailey, I can't thank you and Jay enough for watching Maria tonight."

Maria refused to go to Hailey, so she stayed in Jay's arms as Hailey drove to Chicago Med. Kim hadn't told Hailey the gender of the baby and Hailey guessed that she wanted Maria to be surprised by the birth of her new sibling.

Once they arrived at Chicago Med, they made their way to the waiting room. As with Maria's birth, Platt, Voight, Kim's sister and niece and Kevin were there. Maria wriggled out of Jay's arms and ran over to Voight, jumping into his lap.

Adam walked into the waiting room, with the widest grin on his face that Jay and Hailey had ever seen. He ran over to Maria and picked her up into his arms. He threw her up in the air and Hailey glanced at Jay, seeing how he was watching the interaction between father and daughter. He was wondering if he would ever have that with their child. Maria giggled and asked Adam about the baby. Adam smiled and told her, "Princess Maria Lexie, you have a baby brother!"

Maria squealed in excitement. "Daddy, a baby brother?"

"That's right, Princess Maria. Let's go and see him and Mummy, ok?" Adam threw everyone else smiles before he took Maria into the room. Nicole and Zoe went in with them, because they were family.

Hailey sat down in a chair and Jay sat on the arm of the chair, resting a hand on her shoulder. Hailey reached out and held it. Their pain was only for them, on such a happy day, and Jay was pulled out of his thoughts by Voight's gruff voice. He was talking to Platt and Kevin. "Two kids. Can you believe it, Trudy? They've done so well, haven't they? It's the best thing in the world." He turned his attention to Jay and Hailey and, with a smile, said, "It'll be you two next. A Halstead-Upton baby. I can't wait to see that."

I wish I could see that was what went through Jay's head and he just smiled and squeezed Hailey's shoulder. Platt could see what the two of them were feeling, but they clearly wanted to keep it private and it wasn't the place to say it now. Kim and Adam had just had a son, a brother for Maria, and that was a great day.

Kevin, Voight and Platt were the next ones to go into the room to see the new baby, whilst Jay and Hailey stayed where they were, waiting their turn. Hailey closed her eyes, remembering the last time she and Jay had been at this hospital, thinking that they were finally going to have their baby. Since that had happened, they had taken a break from trying and she was glad. They had needed the time, together. The time to recover.

When Kevin and Maria and the new baby's surrogate grandparents left the room, Adam came out, to tell Jay and Hailey they could go in now. Jay stood up, but Hailey stayed where she was, as if she were frozen. Adam frowned. With a small smile, Jay looked into Hailey's blue eyes. He knew what she was feeling, and he reached out for one of her hands, which she accepted and they followed Adam into the room.

Maria was curled up on the bed, asleep, next to Kim. In Kim's arms, there was a new-born baby. He already had Adam's eyes. Hailey walked over to the bed and smiled down at Kim and Jay patted Adam on the back, before he went to stand beside Hailey. Kim looked up from her baby and smiled and nodded at Adam, who said, "Jay, Hailey, meet Adam Junior Kevin Burgess-Ruzek."

Jay smiled and remarked, "Ruze, Kim, that's a great name."

Kim looked back at her new-born, then kissed Maria's tiny head. There were tears in her eyes as she whispered, "I can't believe we're this lucky, Adam. We've got our two babies." Subconsciously, Jay moved closer to Hailey and Hailey appreciated it. She knew what her husband was thinking. "Hailey, would you like to hold him?"

Slowly, Hailey nodded and lent down so that Kim could pass her the new-born. Hailey waited until the baby was settled in her arms before she stood up properly again. As she looked at the baby, she felt tears creeping into the corners of her eyes and she closed her eyes to keep them at bay. When Maria had been born, Jay had imagined Hailey was holding their own baby. He didn't allow himself to think about that this time, but, by instinct, when the baby started to fuss, he reached out and touched his tiny head, soothing him. In a second, Jay and Hailey's eyes connected and the longing in their eyes was clear and Kim could see it, confirming what she had thought before. The second was over as Jay looked away and backed away from Hailey and the baby, putting his hands in his pockets and Hailey passed the baby back to Kim.

There was a silence and Jay smiled at Kim and Adam. "Congratulations. Give Maria a kiss from us when she wakes up." He gave Kim a small hug and shook Adam's hand and Hailey gave Kim a hug. Her eyes lingered on the baby before she left. As soon as they were gone, Adam said, "I'm not being nosy, darlin', but did you see that? What was going on there?"

Jay and Hailey's drive home was quiet and, when they returned home, Hailey went straight to their room and changed into her PJs and brushed her hair. As Jay walked into their bedroom, Hailey wrapped her arms around his neck and her lips caught his with a passionate kiss. "Jay, I'm ready to start trying again. That moment at the hospital with Adam Junior, I want that, I want to be holding our baby. Our baby. I'm sure it was in my eyes, because I could see it in your eyes, too. Jay, I love you and I want to start trying again. Are you in, trying to get me pregnant?" She asked, with a smirk.

With a light chuckle, Jay nodded, looking into her eyes. "Trying to have a baby again? You don't have to ask me twice, Hailey Halstead. I love you, so much." Green eyes connected with blue and they met in a passionate embrace, holding each other close as they found the bed, hoping and praying that, this time, it would happen. Their baby would finally be conceived, just as they had been wishing for over a year. Jay and Hailey were a team and this was the future they wanted together, hoping that they could have it, but, no matter what happened next, they had each other.
