Maria Lexie doted on her baby brother and Kim and Adam loved having their two children. Adam Junior, better known as A.J, was now 2 months old. Platt and Voight welcomed him as their surrogate grandson, just as they had welcomed and spoilt Maria, and the rest of the Intelligence Unit, including Vanessa, loved him.

Ever since A.J had been born, Jay and Hailey had been trying to conceive again. So far, there had been no luck, but they told themselves they weren't giving up. The heartbreak of the phantom pregnancy had been awful and it had crushed both of them, but holding A.J had reminded both of them of how much they wanted a baby of their own. Hailey and Jay weren't going to give up and they were done with having a break, hoping that, this time of trying, it would work and Hailey would be pregnant with their baby. They had their promise they had made that, somehow, they would have their baby and that promise was making them keep trying. The sight of Hailey's period was no longer a cause for pain, but a promise that it could happen, and it would, if they kept trying. Kim knew what was happening, but Hailey hadn't told her that she and Jay were trying to have a baby and Kim knew that Hailey would only tell her when and if she was ready. Hailey thought that Kim had caught her slip-up from before in the locker room and she was glad that the other female detective hadn't said anything about it since, because she didn't want to deal with anyone's pity. Vanessa didn't understand it, still concerned about Hailey, but at least she was no longer living with Jay and Hailey, so the married couple had space and time together, during this time, but neither of them were going to allow themselves to become as stressed as the first time they had been trying. Vanessa knew that there was something not quite right about Hailey, but Kim had told her not to push it, because Hailey was very private when it came to her life outside of her work, with her marriage. When Hailey was ready, she would tell them what was happening and not before. Kim didn't want Vanessa to add to the stress she was sure that Hailey was already going through, having worked out what Hailey and her husband were going through. Hailey herself had told Kim that she and Jay were working through things, together and Kim respected that.

It was a rare day off for the unit and, whilst Kim and Adam were spending it with Maria and A.J, Hailey and Jay were endeavouring to make a baby of their own, after looking at Hailey's calendar a couple of days ago. Both Jay and Hailey sighed as they heard Hailey's phone ringing and Hailey hid her face in Jay's neck, wishing that she had set it on mute last night. Jay kissed her neck and whispered, with a smile, "It's our day off. Don't get it."

Hailey moved her face and kissed Jay with a smile as she chuckled softly, "I have to check it, at least. I think we're tried enough for one day."

With a smirk on his lips, Jay told her, "I can never have enough of trying to get you pregnant."

"You're such a child, Jay Halstead!" Hailey joked as she kissed her husband again before she reached out for her phone. It was her mum, asking if she wanted to meet up for dinner and she wanted to know if Jay would like to join them. Hailey glanced at Jay, who happily nodded. He wanted to support his wife and he wanted her to be happy and he was glad that she had a relationship with her mum. It was a fragile one and he knew how important it was, especially considering all that had happened during her childhood. Hailey said goodbye to her mum and turned back to Jay, with a smile on her face, as she lay back down next to him. With a smirk and a smile in her eyes, she kissed him and just said, "We have plenty of time before dinner, hours, in fact, Jay Halstead. Like you said, we can never have enough of trying to get me pregnant." Her lips fell onto her husband's as a smile crossed her lips and Jay kissed her smile as well as her lips, pulling her closer to him as he did so.

In between kisses, Jay looked into her eyed and told her, "I like that sound of that, Hailey Halstead. And, for the record, I'll never get tired of it." Hailey chuckled and Jay smiled, in response; he was so glad to hear her laugh. He wanted her to be happy, to be enjoying what they were doing and Hailey defiantly was enjoying what they were doing.

The married couple finally left their bedroom and relocated on the sofa, watching a film. For this time of trying, they were still enjoying it and were trying not to stress about what they were doing; just to relax and, hopefully, it would happen. They had had months off and now they were trying again and, this time, they weren't going to give up. Their mental wellbeing was so important, so they were being more careful about it, this time. Kim and Adam's son's birth had reignited that need inside of Hailey and she had seen Jay's need, too. It had been in both of their eyes.

That evening, Hailey chose a blue dress and Jay told her how beautiful she looked. Hailey chuckled and gave Jay a soft kiss, before she reminded him that he needed to get dressed, too. Hailey changed in the bathroom, whilst Jay changed in their bedroom, choosing a blue and white suit and Hailey smiled at her husband, telling him that he looked very handsome, and their lips met in a passionate, affectionate kiss. Hailey rested her head against Jay's and whispered, wistfully, "If only we weren't meeting my mum for dinner…"

Matching Hailey's smirk, Jay replied, in a low voice, "Later, I'll take your dress off, Hailes. We can do some more of that baby-making."

"You need to not look so good in a suit, Jay Halstead." Hailey mock chastised as she looked at her husband and raised an eyebrow as their grins matched. "I'll never get tired of trying to make a baby and you dressing like that is not helping me right now, husband."

With a smirk, Jay raised his eyebrows and kissed her before he murmured, "Speak for yourself, wife. You're so beautiful, whether we're trying to make a baby or not." They looked into each other's eyes and shared another kiss and Jay whispered in her ear, "To be continued, Hailey Halstead."

Hailey titled her head and just said, "You'd better, Jay Halstead, because we are trying to make a baby."

With a soft chuckle, Jay kissed her on the forehead and looked into her bright, blue eyes. "Of course, Hailes." There was a silence and he added, "We have all the time in the world, after this dinner." As Hailey smiled, Jay kissed her curls, before he stepped away and adjusted his tie so that it looked as good as it could and Hailey grabbed a blue coat before they left the house and drove to the restaurant.

Hailey's mum was already there, when they arrived, waiting, and she stood up and pulled her daughter into a tight hug. "Hailey, darling, you look so beautiful. Blue really is your colour, because it brings out your eyes." She released her daughter and turned to Jay, "Jay, it's nice to see you again, as always." She paused and asked, "You didn't bring your daughter along with you? She's a lovely girl, isn't she? So bright, too. She reminds me of you, darling, when you were that age, and she's the spitting image of you, Jay."

With a raised eyebrow, Hailey pressed her lips together and glanced at Jay. She knew that her mum wasn't mentioning Avery for a random reason. There was a reason. There always was, with her mum, even if it was well-intentioned. Jay smiled and just replied, "It's nice to see you, too, Mrs. Upton. Avery's actually having dinner with her grandparents tonight." He caught Hailey's eye and saw her raised eyebrow.

As the three of them sat down, they discussed matters of no consequence and Hailey was glad that she had this new relationship with her mum, but she also knew that her mum wanted something. No matter what, she had Jay by her side and, after they ordered, her mother's true intentions came to light and, unfortunately, it was no surprise to Hailey, though it was a topic she had managed to avoid with her mum for many months. "So, Hailey, darling, you've been married for almost two years now and I know, when I've asked before you always just say someday, when we're ready, but have you thought seriously about having children? Is it a conversation the two of you have had yet? I asked you over a year ago, Hailey." No-one knew that they had been trying and no-one knew about the phantom pregnancy. Originally, they hadn't wanted to tell, thinking that it might take a while for Hailey to get pregnant, but neither of them had thought that it might take this long and Hailey didn't want to disappoint her mum. When Hailey didn't say anything, her mum added, "Darling, you're not getting any younger and you know that's important for women."

Sitting next to his wife, Jay could feel her tension and, underneath the table, she reached out for his hand and squeezed it and Jay returned the pressure, wanting Hailey to know that she had his support. There was a long silence, as Hailey thought about what to say to her mum, not wanting to lie to her. She wanted to tell someone and, right now, that person was her mother. In a soft voice, Hailey sighed and said, "Mum, Jay and I have been trying to have a baby for over a year now." She paused and smiled sadly, "About 4 months ago, I thought that I was pregnant, and I did a home test and it was positive, but- it was what's known as a phantom pregnancy. I was never pregnant. After that, we took a break for a couple of months and we started trying again after Kim gave birth to A.J. Seeing him reminded us of how much we want our own baby."

The look in Hailey's mum's eyes was what she had wanted to avoid for so long, until her mum reached out for one of her hands and squeezed it. "Hailey, honey, I'm sorry. I wish you'd told me about this before, but you've told me now." She paused and added, with a smile, "You and Jay keep trying and, if it doesn't work, you can always adopt, you know. Have you mapped out when you're ovulating each month?"

With a slight look of embarrassment, Hailey nodded, "Yes, Mum, I have. We've had it mapped out on a calendar in the kitchen for months."

"Well, you keep trying and, also, no matter what, keep loving each other. A baby will mean nothing if you lose each other in your stress."

Both Jay and Hailey smiled and Jay nodded and, with a smile, told his mother-in-law, "We're good, Mrs. Upton. We're looking after each other."

The three of them settled into an easier conversation and Hailey found as if a lift had been lifted from her shoulders. She had actually told someone outload about what she and Jay had been going through for over the past year and she was glad that she had told someone and that person was her mum. She knew that Jay was beside her. All of this had been stressful for Jay, too, but they were less stressed this time of trying and they were determined to remain that way. Her mum's words were also true: Their baby would mean nothing if they lost each other along the way and both Jay and Hailey knew that this wasn't going to happen.

Just as the desserts arrived, Hailey heard the door of the restaurant open, but she didn't think anything of it. Jay's Ranger training also clocked the door and he immediately tensed when he saw who it was and, instructively, he draped his arm around the back of Hailey's chair. It was Hailey's father. "Hailey, it's good to see you."

Within a second of hearing that voice, Hailey froze. Her blue eyes, which had been bright, blue turned to mimic blue ice. The eyes that she used at work with abusive and horrible men, just like her father and her whole body changed, too. Purposefully, Hailey's eyes went between her mum and father as she asked, in a clipped tone, "What are you doing here?" Her voice was cold and strong and Jay guessed what his wife was feeling inside.

Her father just chuckled and replied, "Well, one of your brothers told me your mother was having dinner with you and your- husband, so I thought I'd come to see you. It's been years."

"There's a good reason for that." Hailey snapped, trying to control her angry towards her father. The hatred she had for him was clear in her whole body, including her eyes. She glanced at her mum and she was shocked. Her mum clearly hadn't known that her husband was going to turn up tonight and Hailey's heart broke for the situation her mum was still in. In the flick of a second, Hailey stood up and Jay did the same. "I'm leaving now. Mum, I'll see you soon." Without another word, Hailey walked out of the restraint and Jay followed her, staying by her side, as always.

In the car on the way home, Hailey was totally silent and Jay remained silent, too, understanding that she needed space and silence. As soon as they were home, Hailey almost ripped off her dress and almost jumped into the shower and Jay changed into his PJs, waiting for her. He also made her a cup of hot chocolate. She knew that he was there and, in the shower, Hailey closed her eyes and allowed her tears to finally fall. The very sound of his voice, the image of his face, caused her so much anger and hatred, bringing back memories of her childhood that she had locked away. The only person she wanted right now was Jay. She wanted her husband, who loved her more than anything. She wanted to forget.

Hailey finally emerged from the bathroom in one of Jay's old jumpers and a pair of his sweatpants. Her hair was wet and in its natural state of curls and she smiled as she smelt hot chocolate and she collapsed onto the bed, wrapping her arms around Jay. She rested her head on his chest and sighed. After a while, she sat up in silence and drank her hot chocolate. Hailey ran her hands through her curls as she said, in a soft voice, "Thank you for being here, Jay."

Squeezing one of her hands, Jay replied, in a tone that matched hers, "You don't need to thank me, Hailes. I'm on your side. I always will be." He rested his head against her shoulder as he asked, "Do you want to just sit here and drink your hot chocolate?"

Hailey bit the bottom of her lip as she placed her hot chocolate on the bedside table, before she turned her whole body to face her husband. She titled her head and replied, "No, Jay Halstead. I want to try to make a baby again. I'll never have enough of you trying to get me pregnant." Her lips met Jay's with a passionate kiss and she wrapped her arms around his neck, before she broke the kiss and whispered in his ear, "I love you, Jay, so much. We love each other, no matter what."

Jay kissed her ear and ran his hands through her blonde curls before his hands travelled to her lips. Murmuring against Hailey's hair, he told her, "You don't have to tell me twice. Let's make a baby." His low chuckle made Hailey laugh, too, and they broke their kiss and blue eyes met green in a loving embrace before they continued, holding each other close. No matter what, they would hold onto the love they had for each other. Nothing was more important than that.
