Please, read, enjoy and review :)
Hailey and Jay booked the weekend after the Basset case off and made their way to the cabin, realising that they hadn't been there for a long time. It had been Jay's idea and Hailey hadn't agreed more; it was perfect. They had called Dr. Lawrence and told her that they wanted to proceed with surrogacy, now all that they had to do was wait until a gestational surrogate could be found for them. Jay and Hailey needed this time away, time away from the city, the chaos, pain and stress of their lives and just be together. It was a chance for the two of them to reconnect, to really focus on loving each other. The other was the most important person in the world. The cabin was a bubble, where they had married, a bubble away from the outside world, away from work, and the heartbreak of their infertility. It was perfect. Totally perfect. Jay and Hailey were always connected emotionally, but this gave them the chance to reconnect physically, something they hadn't done since before the fertility tests and it was wonderful for both of them. Hailey had felt Jay's nerves beforehand, but she had calmed him, reminding him that she loved him more than anything and, before too long, Jay's fears were forgotten and they came together, as one, as husband and wife.
The majority of their weekend away was spent on, as Hailey put it, with a playful smile and the tilt of her head, making up for lost time, and Jay was so happy that they had taken that step, back into their marriage, wanting nothing more than to show his wife how much he loved her. He kissed her over and over again and told her that he loved her, that he'd never wanted anyone as much as he wanted her and Hailey smiled and kissed him back, believing every single word he said. It really was perfect and it was time and space away from their worries. It was everything they had needed, to just be together.
As always, Jay was the first to wake up, with Hailey in his arms. His arms were wrapped around her naked body. They were both naked, but still warm from the warmth of the duvet and, of course, from each other. Hailey stirred and smiled as she asked, with a giggle, "What are you looking at?"
"Call me cheesy, but you. You're so beautiful, Hailey Halstead. I really don't remember it being that much fun the last time. Or last night. Or the night before that. It gets better every time."
"Maybe I should refresh for memory, Jay Halstead, or maybe it's something that is even better here because this is where we married? This is where we spent our first night together, as husband and wife?" Hailey chuckled and raised her eyebrows. The significance of that fact that they were together in this cabin, but not in their own home wasn't lost on either of them, but they were both so happy. Hailey kissed Jay's eyelids and asked, snuggling even further into his chest, "You ready for another round?"
Jay smiled, kissed her forehead and traced the shape of her face with his kisses before he mumbled, "Totally." His lips caught Hailey's in a passionate kiss and his arms moved as he pulled her closer. They looked into each other's eyes, then, with a mischievous grin, Hailey dove under the covers and Jay followed her.
The next morning, they were both awake before the alarm and Hailey made herself comfortable on top of Jay, kissing him passionately. In between kisses, she whispered, "I wish we didn't have to leave tonight, I wish we could stay here forever."
With a smirk, Jay replied, "This is our retirement spot. When we're old, we can do nothing together, all day." He ran his hands across the top of Hailey's bra and she smiled in response.
Hailey ran her hands through Jay's hair and chuckled, "That sounds like a good plan to me, Jay Halstead." She paused and so did their kissing and her blue eyes looked into Jay's green ones before she told him, "I love you so much, Jay."
Jay ran his hands through her blonde as he replied, with a smile, "I love you, too, Hailey. Always."
Biting her lip, Hailey titled her head and she moved her hands and placed them on either side of her husband's face. She stroked her hands against his cheeks as she told him, "This is everything we needed, isn't it?"
"Yeah. It is." Jay smiled before he started to kiss Hailey again. "And more. So much more." They both laughed, before they continued and held each other close.
As soon as they returned to Chicago, Jay went to his therapy session. He had been attending them more since the kidnapping of former Captain Basset's daughter and he was glad, because he needed to release these emotions, the emotions surrounding his own fertility problems and the guilt and pain that surrounded that. As always, Jay was on a new dose of medication, which he had been on since the sniper case, to control his PTSD and the anxiety and depression that came with it and Hailey was glad that he was accepting help for it. The Jay Halstead she had met years ago wouldn't have done that or even admitted that he needed help.
Meanwhile, Hailey had lunch with her mum and she told her everything, from the fertility tests to the fact that she and Jay had decided to try gestational surrogacy. Her mum was very supportive, and she listened well, telling Hailey that she could call her anytime and talk about anything. Hailey told her mum how she had become so drunk at Molly's and broken down in tears and how Jay had reacted to it in a different way, but Mrs. Upton wasn't shocked at all. Hailey was glad to tell her mum that, since the kidnapping of Willow Basset and their decision to move forward with surrogacy, she and Jay had been better. Happier together, like they used to be, and their time away had given them the chance to make the most of their time together. It was strange to think that, before that weekend, the last time they had made love had been when they had been trying to have a baby, but they didn't regret their time together or trying for so long. They had each other and that was what mattered, more than anything. As partners in life, they had each other's backs, no matter what.
Hailey was the first to arrive home after having lunch with her mum, so she had a shower and made herself some lunch. The Intelligence Unit was on a 12-hour shift tonight, from midnight tonight from midday tomorrow. It was not usual, but it was how Jay had arranged it and he was the Sergeant. He wanted Kim and Adam to have time together with Maria and A.J and he wanted to have time with his wife, after therapy, and Hailey talking to her mum.
After her shower, Hailey piled her curls up, then she heard the front door opened and Jay walked into the kitchen. He wrapped his arms around her and she turned around and kissed him, before he took off his jacket and made a coffee for both of them, whilst Hailey made some lunch. "How did it go with your mum?" Jay asked, carefully.
Hailey tilted her head and hummed as she made the sandwiches before she replied, "It was actually good, I'm really glad I told her. She needed to know, I know that now, and she was really supportive of me, and you, too." She turned to Jay and smiled as she added, "I couldn't hide from the truth forever. You told Will, so it was only right that I told Mum." Hailey paused, then walked over to the kitchen table and put down their sandwiches and she and Jay sat down, and Jay placed their drinks on the table. Taking a bite out of the sandwich, Hailey swallowed it, then asked, softly, "So, how was therapy?"
Jay rubbed his hands against his thighs and nodded, clearing his throat. He smiled at Hailey and replied, "It was good. It was good to talk about it. And I talked to her about the Basset case, too." Hailey smiled softly and tilted her head, letting Jay know that she was listening to him, silently, waiting for when he was ready. She didn't want to interrupt. Jay knew what she was doing and he smiled at that, reaching out for one of her hands and squeezing it. "I have a great partner who listens to me, Hailes. It was- it's actually good to talk to someone else about it. Someone who isn't involved." He looked quite shocked and shook his head quickly, "I'm sorry. We need to not talk about it for a while."
"Jay, don't apologise for that, we need to talk about it and we had our time away this weekend and that was great, wasn't it?"
With a boyish smile, Jay just replied, "It was the best. The very best."
Their eyes connected and they shared a sweet smile, before they were interrupted by the sound of Hailey's mobile. It was Avery, asking if they wanted to have a late dinner, considering what time their shift started. Hailey smiled and shared this with Jay and she accepted the invitation from her stepdaughter. She and Avery had a good relationship, which was so important and she was glad to see that Jay and Avery were as close as they should have been, as father and daughter.
When their shift ended, in the bullpen, Vanessa asked, "Are you all going out for Kevin's birthday tonight, or what?" Kevin blushed, embarrassed about the attention which was suddenly all on him, but Adam patted him on the back and Hailey saw the other man give a small smile. He was glad that they wanted to do something for his birthday.
Smiling, Kim said, "Yeah, I'm in. Anything for my partner, but I can't really drink. Julie, you in?"
"Totally! I can't get enough of how good the drinks are at Molly's." Was Julie's reply and they laughed.
There was a silence and Hailey shifted in her seat, knowing what everyone else was thinking, so she said, without missing a beat, confidently, "I'll be there and I'll be drinking, but not as much as last time." Her eyes connected with Kim's and Kim nodded, understanding. "Kev, how is 9, so we can go home and have some rest before the big night?"
Kevin nodded, smiling. "I'm down with that."
Carefully, Vanesa asked, "Hailey, are you alright to drink?"
Standing up, Hailey eyed her friend before she replied, "Yes, it's all good for me to drink."
"Will Jay join us, d'ya think? It'd be great if he did. It's been ages since we've all been out together, outside of work." Said Adam, with a smile, directing this question to his partner.
Hailey nodded to her partner before she replied, "Yeah, I think he will. Kev, you should ask him. Like you said," she added, with a smile to her partner, "it's been ages since we all went out together, after work. It'll be fun to let our hair down."
There was an agreement to that and Hailey, Kim, Julie and Vanessa went to the locker room, whilst Kevin walked to Jay's office, knocked on the door and asked if he wanted to join them for drinks, at Molly's. Jay nodded. He didn't always like spending time in crowded places because of his PTSD, but he wanted to go for team morale, and he knew that his wife would like him to be there.
As soon as Hailey returned home, she had a shower and dried her hair. Like the last time she had gone to Molly's, she straightened it, because tonight was for Kevin's birthday, so it was an occasion and she was in the middle of choosing an outfit when she heard the front door open and close. With a smile on his lips, Jay walked over to Hailey and indicated to an outfit and suggested, "I think you should wear that. It looks good on you."
With a chuckle, Hailey turned around and wrapped her arms around Jay's neck. With a playful smile on her lips, she asked, "When did you become a fashion guru, Jay Halstead?"
Jay released a dry chuckle and shook his head. "I know nothing about fashion. But I know you. And I know what looks good on you, Hailey Halstead." He paused and his smile faded before he said, "There's no news from Dr. Lawrence."
"No, there isn't, but we didn't expect there to be this soon, did we?" Hailey responded sadly, her eyes falling to the floor. After a couple of seconds, she looked back up at her husband and told him, "But it doesn't matter, because we had the best weekend, ever, in Wisconsin, and we're going to have the best time tonight." She paused, then added, "Maybe we could pick up where we left off at the cabin, after we're back from Molly's."
Jay's lips captured Hailey's in a passionate kiss before he murmured, "Maybe we could." They kissed again and Jay's hands moved to Hailey's waist and he pulled her closer to him. In between kisses, Jay told her, "We'll do this later. I'll go and have a shower now." He kissed Hailey quickly and walked away, before he stopped in the door and turned to face her. His green eyes connected with her blue ones before he just whispered, "Hailey, you look so beautiful."
Hailey just blushed and stared at her husband, before he disappeared into the bathroom. She remained standing there, smiling to herself, because she and Jay had reconnected, in more ways than one. They had worked through their pain and they were together, loving each other and stronger together, than ever before.
Despite her teasing, Hailey chose the outfit which Jay had suggested and she also selected an outfit him for him. That was only fair. Her outfit was a black, leather jacket, with a long, purple top underneath and a pair of leather trousers. When Jay left his shower, as always, they removed their wedding rings from around their necks and placed them in their rightful places on their fingers. For the whole weekend, they had worn them all day, every day, something which they had both loved, because their rings were a physical reminder of their marriage, of their love and their future together.
When they arrived at Molly's, Jay decided to try to fit his car into a space next to the curb. Hailey laughed and told him, "Dude, the car will not fit. Just go and find another spot and don't be so suborn."
With a smirk, Jay responded, "Hailes, I've got this." Jay looked into her eyes and there was a determined glint in his eyes and Hailey threw her head back and laughed. She had missed this side of her husband lately. The carefree, funny Jay Halstead, the part of him that was hidden from most, but something she had fallen in love with. With all of their stress, she had not seen it and she was so happy to see it again now. Jay Halstead had her heart and he always would and Hailey knew that she held his heart in the same way. She knew it by the look in his eyes. He was her partner, her best friend. Her husband.
"If you think you can…" Hailey trailed off, raising an eyebrow and titling her head in a challenging way, smiling at Jay, almost daring him. She was just as stubborn as him and he knew it. As Hailey predicted, Jay hit the curb and had to find a different space. Biting her lip to stop herself from laughing, Hailey turned to face her husband and just nodded. "Next time, Jay Halstead, trust my judgement; you know I'm always right, after all and it would save you from embarrassing yourself, Sergeant Halstead."
Jay smirked and took off his belt, turning to face Hailey. He rested one of his arms against the back of her seat. Borrowing from Hailey's classic trait of a head tilt, he asked, with a smile, "Are you sure about that, Detective Upton?"
Biting back a smile, Hailey broke the gap between the two of them, kissing Jay softly on the lips before she moved back and rested her head on her car seat, resting it against Jay's arms. "How's that for how sure I am?"
Smiling and shaking his head, Jay replied, "I'm not too sure. I think I need more convincing than that."
"Oh, is that so, even after this weekend?" Hailey teased before Jay's hand found its way into her hair and their lips came together in a passionate kiss and they continued to kiss, and Hailey pulled Jay close, before she broke the kiss and whispered, in his ear, "I missed you, Jay, so much."
Jay rested his head against her forehead and looked into her blue eyes as he mumbled, "I missed you, too, Hailes. But we've got it back."
"Yeah, we have." Hailey chuckled, before she found Jay's lips with another passionate kiss and they held each other close. "Always."
The next morning, all of the Intelligence Unit, besides Kim, had hangovers and Hailey had one of the worst. Adam thought that it was very funny and Jay and Hailey exchanged one of their looks and smiled, before returning to their work. Hailey and Jay were good. They always would be.
