Chapter 79: Welcome to New York.

Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. At Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.

I do not own Chicago PD or any of the characters.

I was so sad to hear the news about Jesse Lee Soffer leaving the series. It will be such a loss for the series, because Jay is such a great charecter and for Jay and Hailey. They are such a great couple and have only married. I only hope that it is as happy for Hailey and Jay as possible. The series will never be the same without Jay Halstead or Upstead :(.

Here is the next chapter. If you're still enjoying this story, please review :)

Before Jay and Hailey returned to the District after a 12-hour break, to return to the case, Hailey called Agent Brown, to accept the offer and the Agent who very happy to hear this and he told Hailey that he would send a pack of information to her, with all of the details, including information about her flight to New York City. Hailey wasn't surprised when Platt called her to the front desk, telling her that there was another package for her, from the FBI's New York office.

"You're going to have to reign this in at some point, Goldilocks. The Feds aren't messing are here. This is a serious offer." Platt remarked, as she handed the package to Hailey.

Hailey smiled and rested her arms against the desk. "I accepted the offer, Sarge, it's only for a few weeks in New York." The shock on Platt's face was clear, so she explained, "I wasn't going to accept it, as you know, I didn't even consider it for a second, but I talked to Jay about it and encouraged me to take it. He thinks it would be really good for me, to be somewhere else and doing something totally different, even for such a short while." Hailey added, with a small smile, remembering Jay's words to her last night.

Platt raised her eyebrows and joked, in her dry way, "Are you sure your husband isn't just trying to get rid of you for a couple of weeks?"

Chuckling softly, Hailey shook her head as she replied, "Not a chance. Will you keep an eye on him while I'm gone?"

The desk sergeant nodded and replied, "Of course I will. Chuckles always needs someone to keep an eye on him." Platt paused, before she added, in a serious voice, "Hailey, I'm proud of you. I know this can't have been an easy decision for you and I'm really glad you're taking it."

"I wouldn't have done without Jay- but if it weren't for Jay, I wouldn't be here. Like I said on his birthday, thank goodness for the bank robberies run by Span." With a final smile to Platt, Hailey walked away and back up to Intelligence.

"Another secret admirer?" Adam asked as she sat down at her desk, with the package. "Is it the Feds again?"

Hailey refrained from rolling her eyes, before she replied, "Yes, it's from Agent Brown." Hailey paused, before she looked at Kevin, Julie and Vanessa and she told him, "I've actually decided to take the offer, so I'll be going to New York at the end of the week. It's only for a couple of weeks and it seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass on."

Vanessa frowned and asked, "Are you sure? When we talked about it, you were dead set against it."

With a small shrug, all that Hailey said was, "Jay convinced me."

Adam raised her eyebrows and Vanessa laughed, "That Halstead is one smooth talker! I'm so glad. I didn't want the surrogacy thing to hold you back!"

Hailey closed her eyes as Vanessa said those words, then she fixed Vanessa with a look. Adam and Kevin didn't know, but they did now because of Vanessa and Hailey glanced at the two male members of their unit and she could see the wheels in their heads working. Kevin said nothing and his face didn't register anything, but Hailey knew that he knew, but Adam's did and Hailey closed her eyes. She felt embarrassed, not just for herself, but also for Jay. She knew that she shouldn't, but she did. She and Jay had wanted to keep it private.

Luckily, Jay walked into the bullpen and asked, "Atwater, did you find anything on the social media of the victim?" He looked between Hailey, Adam and Kevin, sensing that there was something, but now wasn't the time. He could tell that there was something wrong from his wife's body language. Jay looked at Kevin and, with a more assertive tone, asked, "Atwater, do you have something?"

"Yes, I have. Sorry, Sarge." Kevin jumped into action and Hailey focused her mind on the information in front of her. Jay could see Adam looking between him and Hailey, but he ignored it, for now, because the most important thing was the case and Hailey was focused on the board. Vanessa was horrified that she had said that in front of Adam and Kevin and was thinking of ways that she could make it up to Hailey and Jay.

Hailey was glad that, for the rest of the shift, Adam was far too busy to talk to either her or Jay about what Vanessa had said, until, when Hailey went to the locker room, Vanessa followed her and Hailey sorted out her overnight bag, waiting for her friend to speak. More than anything, she didn't want Adam to say anything to her, or to Jay. She wasn't sure how to deal with it and she didn't know how Jay would react. Adam wasn't known for his emotional sensitivity. Finally, Hailey asked, in an irritated tone, "Are you going to speak, Vanessa, or just stand there, watching me?"

Vanessa ran her hands together, in a stressed manner as she spoke, "Hailey, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to say, it just slipped out. I didn't mean to say it in front of the guys."

Putting her overnight bag over her shoulder, Hailey sighed and said, "But, Vanessa, you did say it and now I have to deal with it, and so does Jay." Hailey slammed her locker shut before she added, in a harsh tone, "V, I really didn't want anyone to know because it makes me feel embarrassed, ashamed, and Jay's the same." With a sigh, she left the locker room, leaving Vanessa feeling so guilty.

At the same time as Vanessa found Hailey in the locker room, Adam found Jay in the breakroom, trying to think about what to say to his sergeant. His friend, someone he admired. Jay and Adam were different, but Adam had always respected the former Ranger. He hadn't said anything to Hailey for their entire shift, but he wanted to say something to Jay. He owed him that, after all of the jokes and questions he had asked. Adam wished that Kim had told him, because now, he felt so bad. He never would have kept asking and making jokes about getting drunk if he'd known. All Vanessa said was surrogacy, so all that Adam knew, or thought he knew, was that Hailey couldn't get pregnant. Adam shifted on his feet, wondering what to say and Jay raised an eyebrow. "You alright, Ruze?"

Adam sighed and replied, "I just wanted to say I'm sorry, Jay. Vanessa said about how you and Hailey are using a surrogate and I'm sorry. I know Hailey not being able to get pregnant must be hard and I'm sorry I asked so many questions and made so many comments. I never would've if I'd known."

There was a long silence as Jay swallowed the lump in his throat. Now, it made sense. Hailey's body language. He just looked at Adam and nodded, saying, in a tight voice, "Thanks, Ruze. I appreciate it." Jay patted Adam's arm before he left the room to return to his office and Adam remained where he was, feeling so bad.

Hailey had a shower, changed and ordered a takeaway, waiting for Jay to come home and, whilst she was waiting, she started her packing for her trip to New York. The front door opened and closed and Jay walked into the room. He wrapped his arms around Hailey and kissed her temple, before he asked, calmly, "What did Rojas say?"

For a couple of seconds, Hailey closed her eyes. Adam had spoken to Jay and she wished that he hadn't. Opening her blue eyes, Hailey sighed and replied, "She dropped it into the conversation when I told her about New York, in front of Adam and Kevin. Vanessa didn't mean it, she just- said it and she feels really bad." Hailey paused and added, "I'm sorry, Jay, I really hoped that Adam wouldn't say anything to you."

Jay shook his head. "He actually apologised for all of the questions and remarks he's made. To both of us." Jay paused, then ran his hands through Hailey's hair in an affectionate way, before he asked, "How are you feeling?"

"The same as you: Embarrassed, upset, because I know that Adam and Kevin will be looking at me, wondering what's wrong with me, with my body?" Hailey bent her head and her curls fell against her face.

With a soft finger, Jay touched her chin and held it up so that he could look into his eyes as he said, "Hailey, if they look at you and wonder that, they should look at me and wonder the same thing."

Hailey looked into Jay's eyes before she whispered, "Jay, I wasn't ready for that, I wasn't ready for everyone to know and to be- to be thinking about it when they talk about people having kids and they'll be looking at me and wondering- Adam will feel so bad now and I didn't want that. I didn't want their pity. I wasn't ready and neither were you! I didn't want them to know, Jay."

With a sigh, Jay pulled Hailey into a hug and she wrapped her arms around him as he soothed her, "Hailes, it'll be okay. We'll figure it out." Hailey rested her head against Jay's chest and closed her eyes as he whispered, "It'll be OK, Hailey." The two of them remained where they were, until Jay knew that Hailey was feeling better and they made their way to bed. Naturally, it had upset both of them, but Jay knew that he needed to be calm and strong, for Hailey, and he would be.

Hailey was glad when the end of the week arrived. She was looking forward to going to New York, to be somewhere different and she was glad, now, more than ever, that Jay had persuaded her to go. Adam was still looking at her, wondering what was wrong and Hailey couldn't stand that. She hadn't wanted them to know about her and Jay's fertility problems, about their desire to try surrogacy. Jay felt the same way, but he was remaining calm and steady, to support Hailey.

Jay flew to New York with Hailey and helped her to settle into her accommodation before he returned to Chicago. For Jay, being at home, without Hailey, was strange, but he used the time for himself, to work through his own feelings about Vanessa telling Adam and Kevin about surrogacy.

The next morning, Hailey could feel her nerves creeping in. She had a shower and changed into a suit, putting her hair in a high ponytail before she called Jay, who was on his way to 21. In a loving voice, Jay told her, "Remember, there are two things I'm certain of: You are the best detective I've ever known and I believe in you and me, more than anything. I love, Hailey."

Even though he couldn't see her, Hailey smiled and replied, "I love you, too, Jay. I'll speak to you later tonight." The call ended and Hailey inhaled a deep breath before she left the accommodation and made her way to the training sight.

Over the next couple of days, Hailey found herself enjoying what she was doing in New York, helping to train new recruits. It was so different from what she normally did, but it was so important and she called Jay every evening, giving him every detail and he told her about what was happening at the 21st. Hailey was glad to hear that Kim was back at work and she was sure that Adam was relieved about that. Hailey knew, now, that there had been no reason to be so nervous about going to New York. Jay had been right. She wasn't running away. It was good for her to be somewhere different.

One evening, one of the agents invited Hailey to a bar for some drinks. Hailey initially wanted to decline the offer, wanting to call Jay and have an early night, but she reminded herself that she was only here for a couple of weeks, so she accepted and the agent was very happy. "So, you're married? What does your husband do?"

Hailey glanced down at her wedding ring and replied, "He's a cop, too, a detective, he was my partner for years before we got together. How long have you been married?"

"4 years. I'll show you some pictures when we're at the bar."

With a smile, Hailey replied, "I look forward to it." She texted Jay, to tell him where she was going and he told her to have fun, but not to drink as much as she had when she was out with Kim, Julie and Vanessa. Hailey chuckled and smiled. Of course Jay would never forget that night.

After going back to change Hailey met up with the Agent, called Lydia, who led her to a bar, where they ordered some drinks and they talked about what it was like to be married to another cop. Lydia's husband was an FBI agent, too. That was how they had met and now, 4 years later, they had twins. A boy and a girl. They were 1. Hailey ignored the lump in her throat and asked about the twins, wanting to seem interested. She was interested, but there was an ache inside of her.

"Hailey Upton? Do my eyes deceive me?" Hailey knew that husky voice. Erin Lindsey. "Have you left Chicago and joined our ranks?" She took a seat beside Hailey and ordered a drink.

Hailey shook her head and replied, with a smile, "No, I'm just here for a few weeks, helping out with training, and I can already see the difference in the weather." She paused, then asked, "How are you, Erin?"

Erin smiled and replied, "I'm good. I love working with the FBI." Erin paused, before she added, "When I spoke to you, in the locker room that day, I didn't know that you and Jay were married. I wouldn't have asked if he still- if I'd known. How did you and Jay end up getting married?"

At this point Lydia looked between the two women and said to Erin, "Hailey's husband is the boyfriend you left behind in Chicago. What a small world!" Hailey felt slightly sick. Lydia knew about Jay. Erin had talked about him and Hailey had seen how Erin had looked at Jay when she had been in Chicago. She had had feelings for him, still, but Hailey knew that Jay had told her that he and Hailey were married and so had Kim.

Erin shrugged and replied, "It was a long time ago and I'm glad to see Jay happy. I'd never seen him happier, actually. He was a lot steadier, a lot calmer and happier. It could never have given him that." She turned to look at Hailey and added, "You two make each other very happy." She gave Hailey a small smile, then asked, sounding genuinely interested, "I'm guessing you guys had a really small wedding, right?"

With a small smile on her lips, Hailey replied, "Yeah, it was in Wisconsin, when we were staying at his grandfather's cabin."

There was a silence, then Erin smiled and just said, "Good for you. You understand and love him in a way I didn't, I couldn't. I'm glad he found someone like you." Without another word, Erin stood up and walked away. Hailey's eyes followed her until she was lost in the crowd, then Hailey turned back to Lydia. She looked down at her wedding ring and smiled, thinking about how she and Jay had eloped when they were there, all because of Kim. I've never loved anyone as much as I've loved you. It was one of the best decisions Hailey had ever made.

"Hey, Chuckles, are you burning the midnight oil?" Platt asked as she walked into Jay's office, a little after midnight. "Me and the nightshift are ordering takeaway, do you want in?"

Barley looking up from his paperwork, Jay replied, "No, I'm good, thanks, Sarge."

Platt raised her eyebrows and sat down opposite Jay before she remarked, "I've never seen you do so much O.T and I'm sure Hailey is getting overtime in New York. Are you guys saving up?" She didn't have to finish that sentence; she knew that Jay would know what she was talking about.

"Yeah. We are. We're waiting for our Dr to find a surrogate for us and, in the meantime, we're saving up as much as we can." Jay sighed and finally looked up and ran his hands through his hair as he murmured, "It'll cost us so much." He bit his lip and sighed, "Hailey and I are going to give it a try and, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. We'll always have each other."

The desk sergeant sighed and nodded, before she asked, with a smile, "You miss her, don't you?"

With a smile on his lips, Jay replied, with a small shrug, "Of course. She's my wife." When Hailey had been sent to New York by Voight years ago, Platt had asked him the same question and his reply had been She's my partner. Now Hailey was his wife and he couldn't be happier. He cleared his throat and added, "It's good for her to get away for a while."

"Because of Rojas and her big mouth? I know everything, Chuckles. I get it, you didn't want anyone to know, but you and Hailey have got through worse than Adam and Kevin having questions. Go home, Halstead. She made me promise to watch you when she was gone."

Jay smiled softly and nodded, "Thanks, Trudy."

An hour later, Hailey arrived back at her accommodation, and she found her phone in the bottom of her bag and called Jay. "Hey, Hailes. Did you have a nice time tonight?"

Smiling at the sound of his voice, Hailey nodded and replied, "I did, yes. It was fun and I didn't get too drunk, you'll be so pleased to know." She paused and asked, "Do you know what I was thinking, Jay?"

Even without seeing Jay, she knew that there was a smile on her husband's face, "What's that, Detective Upton?"

"That when I'm home, I want pizza. Proper Chicago pizza and I want to go to pier, to be by the water, with you. The pizza here really sucks."

With a chuckle, Jay asked, "So, what do you miss more? Me or pizza?"

Hailey quirked an eyebrow as she bit her lip before she replied, "I'll have to think about that. When I'm home, I'll have pizza and you."

"Sounds perfect." There was a silence as the two of them enjoyed the sound of each other's voices before Jay broke the silence, "Get some sleep, Hailes. I love you."

Tilting her head and smiling, Hailey whispered, "Good night, Jay, I love you, too, so much. I've never loved anyone as much I love you."

Even though Jay was on the other end of the phone, Hailey knew that he was smiling as he murmured, "That's what we said the night we got married. Always, Hailey. You and me."

Hailey sat down on her bed and smiled into the phone as she whispered into the phone, "You and me, always, Jay Halstead."
