As I sloshed through the mud I called out my horse's name "Diablo!" The scream rang through out the valley and echoed in my ears. "Diablo, Diablo!" The little voice in my head kept repeating. "You know it's your fault! You know you were careless!" I tried to focus on where I was going on this dark, rainy day, but the little voice in my kept on going. Yesterday I was petting Diablo and getting ready to go inside for dinner. Then Lou opened the door and yelled "Amy, you'll see your new horse tomorrow! Now come inside and eat dinner, out of the rain!" As I fumbled with the lock I yelled "Coming!" and gave Diablo one last pat. As I was going inside there was a clap of thunder, a shrill whinny, then a black thing speed out of the stable like a speeding bullet. I'm sure that was Diablo. When I came out to check on the horses after dinner, Diablo's door was wide open and the lock undone. So now I'm here, sloshing through the mud and rain, wiping tears from my face and screaming for my beloved Diablo.
It was 8:30 by the time I got home. "Any luck, Amy?" Grandpa asked me. "No, and I'm really beginning to lose hope!" I replied groggily. All of a sudden I saw a black flash run past the living room window. I yelled "Diablo!" Then ran to the door, shoved my feet in boots and ran outside into the night. I saw a large bush and stopped. Diablo could be hiding in there! I ran up to the bushes and pulled them apart. I rubbed my eyes. Was it real? There in black, floating, glowing letters stood the words 'follow my phantom to where I'm hiding.' Then the letters disappeared. "What?" I cried out in exasperation. I kept on looking at the bushes to see if the letters would appear again, but they never did. So I just sat there and thought about it. "Could Diablo be dead?" I thought in horror. "It couldn't be though, it said to go to the place he's hiding. I guess I should look for it, then." I said and got up, just then realizing how dark it was. I checked my watch, and it was already 9:30! I had been sitting there in the mud for and hour! I rushed home and thought about Diablo. What was he doing right now?
