Much Too Young.
James' thoughts on
his wedding day. J/L, PG.
--
James doesn't know how he got here. Looking in the mirror, his tux was straight and nice. He thinks he might be out of his mind. He was only nineteen, and McGonagall's voice echoes in his head – much too young, much too young. He felt like he didn't have his glasses on, because things were going in and out of focus.
Sirius is talking loudly behind him to Peter and Remus as he sips on a firewhiskey. "Lily's going to kill you if you're drunk during the toast," James manages.
Sirius laughs, plopping an arm on James's shoulders. "Lily's going to be too preoccupied, just like you are," he says. "Jamesie boy, I can tell you're nervous. Everything's going to be fine."
"Right, right," James says. He licks his lips and blinks a few times. He looks into the mirror again, straightening his shoulders. He pulls at his jacket. Remus and Peter come to stand by the two of them. Remus adjusts his tie a bit, and Peter tilts his head.
"The four of us are all dressed nicely," Peter says. "At the same time. When did that last happen?"
"Who knows," Sirius says, grinning. "It'll probably be the last time, too. Until Remus' wedding, of course." He pinches Remus' cheek. Remus pushes him away, making a face.
"My parents should be here," James says.
Sirius, Remus, and Peter look at James's reflection or at James himself. It's been a while since James has talked about his parents. He usually ignored the subject. It's been seven months since his father became ill, and six until his mother followed him.
"You're right," Sirius claps him on the shoulder. "It's a pity they're not."
There is a moment of silence, then Sirius looks outside. "Let's go. I think everyone's here," he says.
It's going to be small – some members of the Order, a few old professors, family, and close friends. Lily's sister comes with her parents, reluctant to be around the looming Hagrid, long-bearded Dumbledore, and Sirius, whom she had only met once, but detests.
Frank Longbottom has taken care of the seating. Remus and Peter sit by Eplhias Doge. Someone is snapping off pictures, and James can only see tons of little white spots against familiar faces. Sirius squeezes his shoulder. Music starts playing.
"Prongs, over there," Sirius clonks him on the back of his head.
James looks to the aisle. The flower girl, Edgar Bones' little girl, skips with rose petals. Marlene McKinnon walks down the aisle, wearing a dark blue dress. Lily comes into sight. Her dark red hair is pulled back, revealing her fair, freckled skin. She's wearing a simple but pretty white dress, and a pearl necklace. She holds a bouquet in front of her. She looks nervous, but it seems like she's glowing. Everyone stands. Her green eyes meet James' hazel ones, and James believes Sirius – everything's going to be fine.
