Hello you beautiful people! So it's that time of the year again, the leaves are beautiful, the winds are changing, and we're all gearing up for the most wonderful time of the year! Right? Well, if you're not really feeling it yet because I'm not, I guess it's still a little early. But nevertheless, I'm back with a thanksgiving one-shot for y'all so here we go.
Summary: When Dimitri mentioned that he's never really celebrated Thanksgiving in his house, Rose gets the idea that that's got to change. She's worried that she wouldn't be able to make it amazing as they're at the academy, but perhaps she's about to learn that with the help of her friends, it could turn into something great.
I don't own VA.
An Untraditional Thanksgiving.
Getting out of practice with Dimitri was a lot easier than I thought it would've been. All it took was me telling him I didn't feel very well and while dhampirs didn't usually get sick, no one could dispute that the Montana weather this time of year could kind of take a toll on a person's immune system. Convincing him that I didn't need taking care of, however, turned out to be the hard part.
In truth, I wasn't really sick, and as tempting as the idea of having Dimitri take care of me was, I needed him to stay away if I wanted my plan to work. So I texted him that I was fine and just needed some rest. He insisted that I shouldn't be alone in my dorm if I wasn't feeling well. I said I'd text him when I woke up and that he could come by my room then. He agreed, and though I felt bad for lying to him, I couldn't help the smile that slid onto my face.
"Damn Rosie," Christian said when I told him and Lissa how I'd evaded Dimitri.
"You're bad," Lissa said. I rolled my eyes.
:"Well I couldn't come up with anything else ok? Do you guys know how freaking hard it is to just tell him that I just wanted a break? He probably wouldn't have even listened anyway." Now it was Christian who rolled his eyes.
"You know, Rose," He said. "Sometimes I swear you're seriously blind. Belikov is kind of whipped you know. He'd do anything for you, and it probably would've been easy to convince him to let you off today since classes are mainly wrapped up and mostly everyone's gone off with their family."
"That might be true, but now we'll never know. Get off your ass and let's get this party started." Christian rolled his eyes, but he did get up.
"Come on both of you you're not here for just your good looks. Help me peel and slice these." He set a bowl of potatoes in front of Liss and me. We both rolled our eyes at him but we did as we were asked.
See my plan was simple. I'd gotten the idea the other day when Lissa and I had been reminiscing about Thanksgiving with her family. Thanksgiving use to be huge with the Dragomirs, and for years after the accident she and I avoided it like the plague. In fact, this was the first time we were doing it, and all because Dimitri had said how they didn't really celebrate it at his house because it was more of an American thing than a Russian one.
Somehow, I'd gotten the idea into my head that I needed to show him what he'd been missing. The only problem with that was there was no way I was going to be able to pull it off. First off, I didn't cook and even if I did, there was no way in hell I could pull off the whole turkey and fancy feast here at the academy. That was when Lissa stepped in.
"Well Christian cooks you know." She'd said and I rolled my eyes.
"Yes he does and his food's amazing Liss," I said. "And if you ever tell him that I said that I'll deny it to the very end, but even Christian can't pull off the whole fancy meal. Right?"
"Well, what if he didn't have too?" She'd asked rolling her eyes no doubt at the part about me denying that Christian's food was good. "What if we do something simpler?"
"What do you have in mind?" It turned out that my best friend was nothing short of a genius, and an idea to show Dimitri what he had been missing all along turned into something simple and amazing even if it was a little on the untraditional side.
…
An hour and a half later, I dialed Dimitri's number. He answered on the second ring, something which made me smile. "Roza," He said, his voice wrapping around me and making my heart flip a little.
"Hey, comrade." I said happy that I was actually in my room because I just knew Christian would've been making fun of me had he been here. As it was, Lissa was already smirking from where she was sprawled on my bed.
"Feeling better?" Dimitri asked. "Were you able to get some rest?"
"I am actually," I said and yawned a bit. "And yes I did get in a nap." Actually I kind of wished I had, because I was half lying in bed and Lissa was playing with my hair which was only making me want to curl up and go to sleep. "Can you come by?"
"Sure love," He said. "I'll be there in a couple minutes. I love you."
"I love you too baby. See you soon." I hung up and then flinched when Lissa squealed and started gushing about how we were so cute.
"Yea, yea," I said rolling my eyes at her. "Calm down woman."
"I cannot! You guys are just so…ugh!" I rolled my eyes yet again and grinned making Lissa giggle.
Lissa left and true to his word, Dimitri showed up a couple minutes later. I couldn't help the grin that slid onto my face when I opened up the door and saw him standing there. I pulled him inside and closed the door jumping into his arms and kissing him hard. His arms wrapped around me as he kissed me back, and for a few seconds nothing else mattered. It was just he and I and this kiss that was as intoxicating as any drug.
'Don't get side tracked, Rosie.' Lissa's voice said in my head and I internally groaned as I pulled away from Dimitri's lips. Sometimes, it was pretty obvious that the bond between Lissa and I was one sided, but there were moments like these when I swore she had a psychic link into my mind, too.
"What's up?" Dimitri asked making me realize that I must have had some kind of look on my face. I shook my head.
"Nothing," I said. "So now that I'm better, want to take a walk with me?"
"I don't know if that's such a good idea, Roza. It is pretty cold out there you know." He said and then a smirk that just screamed mischief slid onto his face. "To you Americans at least." I rolled my eyes and smacked his chest playfully.
"Of course you'd say that, Mr. I didn't grow up in the frozen waste land that is Siberia." He rolled his eyes and I smiled, loving this playful side of him. It was a side that few got to see and it made me happy to be one of the lucky ones who got to see it even if it was rare.
"One day my love," He said pulling me close and kissing my cheek. "I'm going to make you eat those words." I grinned, flashes of the amazing future I knew we could have together flashing through my mind.
"Yeah," I said cheekily. "If you can convince me to get on a plain with you." Dimitri rolled his eyes and smacked my butt lightly.
"Oh, you'll come," He said and suddenly my mind was going to very dark places that made my underwear wet. So I was glad when he agreed to take a walk with me, because jumping him then and there was seaming more and more appealing the longer we stood there.
…
"Is all this really necessary?" Dimitri grumbled when I told him that I wanted to blindfold him.
"Yes," I said sweetly. "Because the point of a surprise is that you don't know what it is until it's time." He rolled his eyes and agreed grudgingly. Carefully, I put the blindfold on him and took his hand to lead him to our destination after making sure he couldn't see.
Finding the perfect place to do this had been a little difficult. In my mind, the perfect place would have been the cabin. It was rarely used if ever, and because of its secluded location, not many people even knew it still existed. The problem with that however was that it was mine and Dimitri's place. It was our own little retreat, our safe haven if you will. Maybe it was petty of me, but I didn't exactly want to share it, and I didn't want to leave Lissa and Christian out of this either. So, we had to find another place.
As it turned out, that other place ended up being one of the lounges. With most of the academy's students away with family on thanksgiving break, it was easy to get one of the best ones. As I led Dimitri inside now and saw Lissa, Christian, Adrian and Eddie waiting there for us, and all the food set out on the table, I couldn't help the eager smile that slid onto my face.
"Ready baby?" I asked softly. Dimitri shrugged and I giggled. "Oh come on love don't look so much like I'm leading you to your doom."
"With you one never really knows." I pouted and took the blindfold off him just as Christian snorted and everyone else laughed. I wanted to glare at them, but the look on Dimitri's face when he realized what was going on was priceless, and thus, it held all my attention. The smile that he shot me, one of those rare, full smiles that he reserved for only me and could make the entire world light up made my heart speed up a bit.
"Welcome to Thanksgiving dinner, comrade." I said. That smile only grew, and as we all sat around the table eating turkey sandwiches, potato salad and a really good pumpkin pie even though it was store bought, I couldn't think of anywhere else I wanted to be. True we didn't have the huge turkey, or the stuffing or anything like that, but we had good wine and ice-cream and a game was playing on the TV. Aside from all of that, we all did have a lot to be thankful for. So as untraditional as this thanksgiving might have been, it was sweet and we were thankful, and I knew we had just created something here that was going to turn into tradition.
Alright my lovelies, give me your thoughts, ok? Let me know if you guys want another Thanksgiving one-shot!
