Thank You For The Music

Summary: Sky learns a valuable lesson through a song of thanks.

Disclaimer: I do not own SPD. The song belongs to ABBA.

It was a pretty slow day, and like many days like this the whole gang was lounging back. Even Cruger sat talking with Kat off in the corner. Bridge, Z and Boom were playing a game of Uno with Jack who was visiting for the afternoon and Sky sighed as he watched Sid pick and strum at her guitar. It was nothing new, after all he had seen her do this countless times. She would always come into the common room, sit down on the couch and proceed to sing the most horrid music he had ever heard. Music that would mostly be written about herself. It was so awful that Z would on many occasions use it to get information out of those they were interrogating. Even so, today seemed different somehow. True, Syd sat in her usual place, but her attitude seemed to have changed. After Grumm's attack, she had been quiet and pretty much stayed to herself. The picking and strumming stopped and then picked up again as she built up a tempo. Her music even sounded different today, as if it were a classic out of the past.

"I'm nothing special, in fact I'm a bit of a bore. If I tell a joke, you've probably heard it before." She sang.

Sky raised his eyebrow. This was definitely different from her usual.

"But I have a talent, a wonderful thing, 'cause everyone listens when I start to sing. I'm so grateful and proud, all I want is to sing it out loud."

Sky smiled. He remembered the song now, a classic for sure. He was surprised to hear Syd singing something that wasn't originally her's, but for some reason it worked. She seemed to sing it from her heart.

"So I say thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing. Thanks for all the joy they're bringing. Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty, what would life be? Without a song or a dance what are we? So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me."

The room seemed to fade into silence as Sky watched her. Perhaps it was because everyone else was watching her as well, he didn't know, and he certainly wasn't going to turn to look. This new side of Syd was captivating him and he wouldn't be surprised if it was captivating the rest of their team as well.

"Cruger says I was a fighter before I could walk. Kat said I could sing long before I could talk, and I've often wondered, how did it all start? Who found out that nothing can capture a heart like a melody can? Well, whoever it was, I'm a fan."

Sky heard a couple of chuckles from the corner of the room. Yep, Syd held their attention. She continued to sing the chorus, her eyes had shut by now and she seemed to have no idea about the audience that she held.

By now he wasn't hearing any laughter, but sniffles were coming from Z's general direction. She must have picked up the mood change in the room just as he had. In fact he'd be surprised if they all hadn't picked up Syd's meaning by now. She was thanking them. All of them. Taking a chance to look away from her, he scanned the room at his past and present team mates. They all seemed to be moved beyond words. All held the same contemplative gaze on the pink ranger. A gaze that spoke volumes about the meanings of honor, teamwork and true friendship. Yet, most of all, Sky realized that these people meant more to him than anything honor, teamwork or friendship could offer. They were a family.

He turned back to Syd and offered her a carefree smile, even though she couldn't see it. Yes, they were a family...

"So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me."

And perhaps something more.
