Chapter 6

The Salvator's benefit on Saturday night was being held at the Field Museum. One of Caroline and Elena's best friends, Bonnie Bennett, was a curator there and was more than happy to help secure the location. Since Caroline was part of the planning along with her friends, she had brought all she needed to get ready with her. She entered the space that the benefit would take place and the blonde stopped in her tracks. It was beyond what she had imagined. She spotted Bonnie on the other side of the room and hurried over, taking her friend into a hug, "Bon, this looks amazing!" she pulled back and continued to look around, squealing slightly, "the boys are going to love it."

Bonnie laughed and shrugged, "The creativity came from you and Rebekah. I simply made sure it came together," she said with a small shrug but wide grin, "I do have to ask you about the silent auction items," Caroline followed Bonnie over a large round table with different prizes laid out, "now this one," she lifted an index card that was placed in a silver frame, the prize sprawled out in fancy handwriting,

A night on the town with one of Chicago's most eligible bachelors, Damon Salvatore

"This doesn't bother you," Bonnie asked, an eyebrow raised, "I thought you and he were getting pretty close."

Caroline wouldn't deny that there was a small part of her that often thought about being more than just "friend's with benefits" with Damon. But she didn't see what they had as much more than that. She shrugged one shoulder, "Not really. It's for a good cause and we are not committed to each other," she made sure to make eye contact with her friend so she would know that it truly didn't bother her, "Besides, there are others here. We've got a firefighter, an attorney and even one of the Chicago Bears," she said with a bright smile, "Now, where should I go get ready? I want to be sure I am able to double, no, triple check everything is perfect before the guests arrive."

Klaus paced in the foyer of he and Kol's penthouse, looking at his watch every thirty seconds. He was antsy for sure, "Kol would you hurry up!" he shouted, "The car has been waiting ten minutes and I am inclined to leave your arse here," the last word was barely out before his little brother strolled out of his room towards his older brother casually, a smirk on his face.

"Patience, brother. I was merely being sure I looked my very best for our introduction into the elite society of our new city," he gave his brother a pat on the shoulder as they made their way to the elevator.

Klaus was nervous, oddly enough. Not due to this being his first soiree in the Chicago who's who. No, the odd and unfamiliar feeling of butterflies was that he was going to see Caroline again. He had not had the privilege of running into her since he picked Rebekah up for dinner, although it wasn't due to lack of effort.

Considering they worked in the same building, the man was sure that he would have the pleasure of seeing the woman that had highly peeked his interest at least once. Klaus even managed to hit the wrong button on the elevator more than once, but, alas, he never had the fortune. He did however, have to share an elevator ride with Damon. The two men merely gave each other a pointed look and rode to the lobby in silence. It wasn't until Friday and Klaus ran into Stefan, the latter asking if he would make it to the benefit the next day, which he had confirmed that he would be there, blank check at the ready.

Caroline was barely out of the backroom where she had gotten ready before she was bombarded by one of the staff about the guest list. She hit the ground running and before she knew it, the party was in full swing. She had barely even spoken to Rebekah, who seemed to be lucky enough not to be the first person to be asked about anything. Caroline didn't mind, she at least had a date. And Caroline wanted to prove to Stefan and Damon that she truly could be depended on. Perhaps it would help her move up from merely Damon's 'pretty little secretary.'

She finally was able to escape back into the backroom to try and get off her feet for a bit. She sat in an armchair and kicked her heels off. The headset she had on was tossed onto the table to the right of her, Caroline closing her eyes as she could feel what would likely be a massive migraine within a matter of hours, "There you are," the familiar voice of Damon Salvatore caused her blue eyes to flutter open, "I think you need this," he handed Caroline a glass of brown liquid and Caroline sat up and took a large swig, causing him to chuckle, "easy killer."

Caroline downed the rest of it before sitting up, "I'm sorry, I just needed a quick break," she stood up, the blonde looking up at him, their bodies close as he wrapped his hands around her face.

He placed a kiss at the tip of her nose, "Don't apologize, your busting your ass. Besides," he moved his hands down to her shoulders then her waist, "My date is obnoxious and I may end up having to ditch her if she keeps talking about how many Instagram followers she has."

She gave him a tight smile, but something within her felt a bit of disappointment, "You brought a date, huh?" Caroline didn't mean to sound irritated but it came out that way.

He raised a brow, "Jealous," he said, in a far too cocky way, causing Caroline to roll her eyes as she sat back down to get her shoes on, "Cause I'm all for a three-way."

If looks could kill, the one she gave Damon would have had him six feet under, "I believe we have had that discussion before and I have zero interest," before he could retort, Caroline checked her reflection quickly and left the room.

Klaus had been there nearly an hour with no sign of Caroline. He thought he finally saw her beautiful blonde curls escaping into another door. He started to make his way until he saw Damon slip into the same door moments after. He halted his steps, debating what to do. Klaus decided to introduce himself to a group that was standing not far, hoping to catch the blonde when she came out.

After a few minutes, she did just that. She looked stunning, Klaus not noticing the look of irritation at first. He bid his goodbyes and made his way, "You look ravishing, Miss Forbes," he stepped in front of her and a look of annoyance was quickly replaced by what he hoped was relief wash over her face.

"Klaus," she breathed, a slight blush washing over her. Her hair was half up, her blond curls cascading around her shoulders. The spaghetti strap dress was a burgundy color, fitting every curve of Caroline's body, "I hope you are enjoying yourself. I've been so busy I haven't had much time to breathe," she said with a slight laugh.

"Well, you've done an amazing job, as well as my sister, where is she by the-"

"Miss Forbes!!" he was cut off by a skinny boy running towards them, "Emergency phone call," the kid stumbled and Klaus caught him by the arm after he tripped over a woman's dress, "Th-thank you," the nervous boy stuttered before handing the phone to Caroline.

She sighed, "Please give me just a minute," it seemed she didn't want him to leave, which he was happy about. But the frown that formed made it seem this wasn't good news, "shit," she muttered under her breath, still listening to whomever was on the other side, her hand rubbing at her forehead.

"What's going on," Klaus' sister slid up beside him, "Who is on the phone," she asked him quietly. He shook his head to indicate he was as clueless as she was.

As soon as Caroline hung up the phone she handed it back to the kid and shooed him away, "You aren't going to believe this," she said, looking at Rebekah, "We lost our Bears player for the silent auction. That was his agent, apparently he tore some muscle or something and needs surgery. They feel its best he not participate and he would send a considerable donation."

"Well," sighed Rebekah, "Should we just pull it and apologize to those that already put in a bid, if anyone has?"

Caroline sighed, "Unless you can convince one of Chicago's other eligible bachelors to volunteer."

"How about you, Klaus?!" said Rebekah loudly.

He was taking a sip of his drink and nearly choked on it, "M-me?"

"Him?" said Caroline, a bit of a frown before she shook it off and shrugged, "Well, sure, why not."

"I um," he looked between both woman. He would prefer to just ask Caroline out on a date and not have to suffer through a night with a woman or possibly man that he didn't even know. But he knew it was for a good cause, "Sure thing, I'll do it," he said with a hesitant smile.

The night was coming to a close and Caroline's head was in full migraine mode. She could barely open her eyes and was able to finally sit down at a table with Damon and Stefan. Her head was in her hands, Caroline trying to will away the pain. The sound of Damon's dates voice was raking on her nerves and Caroline was grateful that Rebekah volunteered to announce the winners of the silent auction.

They were on Damon now and Caroline had to hold in a fit of laughter as a woman nearing her 80s met them on stage. She was from one of the richest families in the country let alone, the city. Damon of course was a gentleman and helped her off the stage.

"Last but not least, I want to ask my brother, Niklaus Mikaelson to join me up here on stage."

Her stomach flipped, wishing that she was rich enough to bid on Klaus. The suggestion of having him bid on caused a feeling inside of her she couldn't explain.

"Alright, and the highest bid for a night out with Niklaus as well as the highest bid of the night for," she blinked a few times, "A million dollars….goes to," Rebekah opened the envelope and shock and confusion registered, "The highest bidder is…Caroline Forbes?"
