Jane Banks turned the pages of the book looking in vain for an interesting story. It was mixed blessing being a character in one of the smaller fanfiction universes. The people who wrote in it were passionate about the characters and the canon. It was a small but dedicated group, friendly and respectful of one another, and they wrote good stories. Jane was glad she wasn't in one of the mega universes. Poor Hermione Granger had over 50,000 stories written about her. She had been shipped so many times with each of the male characters that she lost count after the first year. No wonder Hermione had such a haunted look whenever Jane saw her. Jane shivered, relieved that there was no creepy potions master twice her age in her fanverse that she might be paired with. Still, thought Jane, it would be nice to have a more grownup type of life and a chance at falling in love.

Jane was one of a set of female characters who had appeared in canon as children and never got past adolescence. They inhabited a strange, in between place in the fanfiction universe, allowed to grow up in some of the stories, but on the whole remaining children. Jane had often discussed this dilemma with her friends, Dorothy Gale, Wendy Darling and Alice Liddell. They felt frustrated-like that little girl in the vampire story no one was supposed to write about. The frustration had only increased after what happened to Susan.

Susan Penvensie had been part of the original group before Jane joined, but after that second Narnia movie her fandom had exploded with stories about her and Prince Caspian.

"Mind you, it's not all it's cracked up to be," she told the girls. "It takes a little while to get used to the idea that you're being paired with someone who used to be younger than you and is now five years older."

"But he is beautiful," said Jane dreamily, "with those wonderful dark eyes and hair."

"Yes," said Susan. "Caspian is really happy with the changes, and it is very nice to have grown up stories."

"And your clothes are ever so much prettier," said Alice. "I'm so tired of wearing blue."

"Me too," said Dorothy, "and an apron. Who came up with the idea that girls should wear blue dresses and white aprons?"

"At least it's a dress," said Wendy. "Try living your entire life in a nightgown."

"Yes," thought Jane, "what I need is a movie just like Susan. The 1964 movie had changed everything in the Poppins universe. Jane hardly ever saw Annabel and the twins anymore. Mary Poppins had been inordinately pleased by the addition of Bert, who had only been a minor character in the books. It had changed her from a snarky, priggish nanny into a raging femme fatale. The two were always off somewhere together.

"Mary has all the fun," sighed Jane. She tossed the book aside and curled up under the covers. The chance of a new movie was nil. It was over 50 years since the last one. "Probably just be a sequel anyway," thought Jane as she drifted off. "I'd probably get to go to school or have a puppy."

Jane awoke with a start. The bed felt different. Something large and warm was breathing on her neck. She sat up cautiously in the bed and turned to look at the shape beside her.

Dark hair and a day's growth of beard framed the face lying on the pillow next to her.

"No," thought Jane as she looked in wonder at the bare shoulder and arm outside the blanket. "Definitely not a puppy."

And then it hit her. SHE HAD BEEN SHIPPED! Quickly she grabbed for the book and found it was now a flat, tablet like affair with a glass screen. It took her a bit to figure how it worked, but soon she was busy reading.

His name was Jack; occupation Leerie. What was a leerie? Oh well, she'd figure it out later. Right now she had more pressing concerns. "Please be nice, please be nice," she begged the writers as she continued reading. She sighed in relief. "Yes, definitely in the nice category."

She looked down at her new, grown-up body than got out of bed and tiptoed over to the closet. A row of pretty clothes greeted her including—oh my goodness were they really—pants.

Giddy with excitement, Jane got back in the bed. She sat for a while, delightedly surveying her new acquisition then lay down and curled up next to him. Sleepily, Jack put his arm around her and pulled her close.

Wendy Darling was going to be so jealous.
