Chapter 1
Dreamer
14-year-old Heidi Hearts woke up and looked out her window. She had a dream where she was a princess in a castle. The dream felt so real, Heidi thought maybe she was at least in Auradon. Nope, she was still on the smelly Isle of the Lost, ugh. She knew a lot of Villian Kids (VKs for short) loved the Isle and had a sense of pride for it. Heidi was not one of those VKs.
She was the only one of the Queen of Hearts' four children to be born with a good heart. When Heidi was four she would go around everywhere being kind and delightful. She said "please", "thank you" and even "you're welcome" as she loved to help people. She skipped around the Isle with a smile on her face, telling all the villains how beautiful they were. She didn't know it at the time, but wearing her heart on her sleeve was a big mistake.
She was teased by Mal and Jay and punished by her mother. She wasn't even allowed to give her baby sister Hallie hugs and kisses. Besides, she couldn't keep smiling long. It took her five seconds to realize how disgusting the food was. Rotten fruit, black coffee, spoiled milk, and stale bread were the only options the Isle offered because all the food was leftovers from Auradon.
Heidi was grossed out so much she refused to eat. Also, no one on the Isle bathed, showered, or even put on deodorant which made it a very smelly place. It wasn't long before Heidi's nose was scrunched up in disgust like everyone else on the Isle. Furthermore, she stopped skipping because the streets were so filthy, Heidi started walking carefully with her head down to avoid stepping on something. By the time she was six, Heidi was enraged and disgusted about her current situation.
She started acting rude and no one could tell she had ever been kind. For eight years, Heidi had defended herself by talking back, coming up with powerful comebacks, and grumbling about living conditions. Only she could tell she still had a good heart because she had covered it in a wall of ice to protect it. Even admitting she had a dream about Auradon was dangerous. Especially because for Heidi, it wasn't a nightmare.
She had always dreamed of Auradon and wanted to go there. When she got to Auradon she could let the ice around her heart melt. She could be nice and have friends. Most of all, in Auradon she could be herself. Two years ago before King Ben's coronation Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos went to Auradon and were accepted as students into Auradon Prep.
Now, going to Auradon was a common dream. Even so, Heidi was still different. She was the only one who didn't want to come back.
