Chapter 2
Hope
Heidi got dressed in her red, white, and black checkered leather dress and hit the streets. She headed to the marketplace to steal a stale muffin. Heidi hated stealing, and she surely didn't want a stale muffin. However, money was scarce on the Isle. If you didn't steal, you didn't eat.
Besides, a stale muffin was the only thing Heidi could barely choke down. She stole two, so she could have something for lunch later. Heidi ate so little she was often starving. Life had been cruel on the Isle. She started to wish she hadn't woken up from her dream.
Heidi stole a newspaper in hopes she could imagine what she would be doing right now if she was in Auradon. Mal's face jumped out at her from the front page. It wasn't surprising Mal was on the front page because she was heroin in Auradon and the girlfriend of King Ben. Maybe today would be a lovely installment of their love story. Heidi sighed on the inside, just thinking about it.
She got a better look at the page and saw Evie, Jay, and Carlos standing next to Mal. Heidi's heart jumped. Whatever was going on today had something to do with the VKs. Maybe there was an epic victory on Auradon by Mal and her friends. Now, Heidi was curious.
Mal and her friends had defeated Ursula's daughter Uma a few months ago. What could have happened? Was everyone else on Auradon okay? Heidi quickly read the headline, which said: "VK Day is Here!" Today was VK day!
Heidi was so excited. VK day was when Mal and her friends would come to the Isle and choose four VKs to come to Auradon with them. It was today! Heidi rushed to get her application. Today was the day her dream could come true.
Next week, she could be attending Auradon Prep. She had even heard Evie had created a charming little country home for the VKs to live in. It all sounded so spectacular. It wasn't long before Mal, and her friends arrived on the Isle. After an enthusiastic musical number, they stood above the tunnel leading to the barrier to announce the four VKs who would go to Auradon Prep.
Mal gave a short speech saying they'd be back so many times the VKs would get sick of them. Heidi was sure she would never get sick of having a chance to go to Auradon. Then, finally, they started announcing the VKs to go to Auradon. First was Dizzy, the daughter of Drisella and granddaughter of Lady Tremaine. Next were the twin sons of Smee.
Finally, there was only one VK left. Heidi leaned forward, knowing this could be the moment her dreams came true. The last VK to go to Auradon would be Celia, the daughter of Dr. Facilier. It was so unfair! Dr. Facilier probably used his position as Headmaster of Dragon Hall, the Isle's high school, to get his daughter outside the barrier.
If that's what it took to go to Auradon, Heidi didn't have a chance. The Queen of Hearts would never pull strings for her. Heidi was still the most hated of her siblings, and no one in her family would do favors for her. Heidi felt like she would be stuck on the Isle of the Lost forever.
