Chapter 4

Miracle

Heidi spent the next few days thinking about what Jack had told her. She so longed to meet her family in Auradon, if Jack was telling the truth. Heidi knew by now that any villain can lie. Although, it did make sense. Heidi always knew she didn't belong on the Isle of the Lost. She had this natural goodness inside her that couldn't be broken down. She had no idea where it came from, but what if it came from an inherently good family? Where else would she have got it from?

A few after VK day, Mal and her friends came back to pick up the VKs who would attend Auradon Prep. Heidi wanted to ask them to take her with them, but would they even listen to her? What if they didn't believe or thought she was crazy? Who would blame them if they did? All of it did sound a little impossible. On the other hand, if it was true, Heidi needed to go to Auradon to find out for sure. Still, she wasn't brave enough to approach her heroes, even if they weren't evil anymore.

Heidi just watched as Celia, Dizzy, and Smee's twins got inside the limo. She couldn't help feeling that she needed to go with them, but there was nothing she could do about it. As the limo drove back off the island, Hades rolled through the crowd and put his head and arms through the shrinking hole in the barrier.

"I don't belong here!" Hades shouted, "I am a god!"

Heidi froze. She never thought she would ever relate to any of the villains on the island, but at this moment she did. Hades said he didn't belong on the island, and neither did she. She wanted to join him, to make her voice heard. She wanted the whole world to know that she didn't belong on the island, she never belonged there, and she never would. However, Mal was starting to fight him in dragon form. She didn't want to be seen as a threat like Hades.

This wasn't the right way to make herself heard. Heidi was just afraid she'd never get another chance to assert her voice. What if she was trapped on the island forever? What if she never got to meet her real family? She knew Mal and her friends wanted to take every VK off of the island, but Heidi didn't want to wait. Even another second on the island would be a second too long for her. She wished she'd never even been here in the first place.

Later that day, Heidi saw on TV that a sleeping spell was being cast throughout Auradon. She worried that, if she did have a family there, they might in trouble. Even if she could get past the barrier, she wouldn't be able to help them. She still didn't even know who they were. The next day, the barrier disappeared and was replaced with the most beautiful bridge imaginable, stretching across the sea to Auradon. Heidi couldn't believe it.

This was her opportunity to go to Auradon. All she had to do was walk across the bridge, and she could start her journey to find her family. Within a few days, she might be finally home where she belonged. She was no longer trapped. She didn't have to wait for Mal and her friends to eventually come to get her. She could just go after what she wanted herself. For the first time in her life, Heidi took a step off the island and made her way towards her family. She was going to discover her past, and forge her way to the future she wanted for herself.
