Title: What do you Say

Summary: Half-songfic. Sam's in the hospital and Danny's right beside her, unsure of what to say.

Disclaimer: Danny Phantom is not mine nor is the song What do you say by Reba Mcentire.

Her every breath is weaker than the last
And lately when she sleeps, she talks about the past
Her husband knows she's tired of holding on
She looks at him and says "I want to go home"

I sit beside her and hold her hand. My wife of fifteen years is now dying. It hurts both me and our children to see her like this. We all know it's just a matter of time before the Good Lord calls her home.

I know that she's ready to give up. Her pulse is weakening and she doesn't want to do anything. I lay my head down beside her and just as I close my eyes, she stirs.

"Danny." She says. I was about to respond when I noticed she was still asleep. "Will you come back?" She must have been dreaming of one of the times I was leaving to fight a ghost battle. "I love you." She said softly. All of a sudden a smile appeared on her face. "Stay near the shore!" She called. Her dreams just kept changing. They were all flashbacks and each one, sad or happy, made me want to cry.

I reach up to wipe away the tears that ran down my cheeks and I see her eyes shoot open. I try to force a smile but he couldn't. It was too hard to try to fool her anymore.

"Danny." She looks up at me sad and tired.

"Yes Sam?" I ask squeezing her hand slightly.

"I want to go home."

What do you sayin a moment like this
When you can't find the words to tell it like it is
Just close your eyes and let your heart lead the way
Oh what do you say

I sat there not knowing what to do now. She bit her lip and looked away. Her eyes filled tears and she closed them.

I felt my own tears roll down my cheeks and I felt my throat ache. When Sam looked back at me, I didn't know what to say. She wanted so much to let go and be where she belonged but there was nothing I could do, nothing I could say.

"I know Sam." I whispered. "I know."

"I love you." She told me still crying.

"I love you too." I leaned down and gently kissed lips.

"I'm sorry Danny. I can't hang on much longer." By now I couldn't stop the tears that poured from my heart. I closed my eyes and layed down next to her in her bed.

"Danny-"

"Shhh." I put my finger to her lips. "Just stay quiet."

We layed there like that for an hour before she fell back asleep. I just savored the moment, having her in my arms. She was peaceful for awhile.

Then she stopped breathing.

Oh what do you say
