Kim Possible: Invisible

BY LJ58

Shego woke with a yawn two days later and walked to the room Kim was using, but wasn't sure if she was still in bed or not. Hard to tell when her usual sparring partner was currently invisible, and at times made so little noise she could sneak past even her.

She walked over to the bed, the sheets rumbled and left thrown back, and called out, "Hey, Princess? You still here?"

There was no answer. Still, she knew the girl could sleep like the dead at times. She carefully put a hand down, carefully checking, but found no evidence of a body, unseen or otherwise.

"You up, Kimmie," she shouted as she walked down the hall toward the living area.

She frowned, and went to the office she used to maintain various accounts via online banking or whatever was needed.

She saw her desk chair was currently leaning back as if someone were stretched out in it, but nothing more. She saw the computer still on, with a smashed laptop nearby that looked like someone had used it for a punching bag.

Shaking her head, she called out, "Hey, Kimmie. You awake?"

"Hmmm, oh, yeah," the weary voice replied after a moment.

"Were you up all night?"

"Not all night," the reply came.

"So, anything hopeful? Or helpful?"

Fyne really didn't have anything that suggested he even cared about reversing this state," Kim said, the chair turning and straightening now as Kim seemed to turn toward her. "He did have a lot of other very disturbing ideas he was working on or considering. I swear, he's worse than Dr. Bortel, and that freak was bad enough."

"I'm not arguing. What about the Nerdlinger's files?"

"He had a device he thinks could somehow draw out the phasic energy from my cells. Only he never finished it. He seemed to consider it too great a risk. Or so he said. He left a lot of question marks, though, and even left remarks on his rough schematics that he felt it was better to use an invisible agent, his word, than risk life when said agent could be so….valuable."

"So, he might have guessed this was going to happen but didn't mind," Shego asked.

"That's what it sounds like," Kim muttered sourly. "Still, I think he has enough completed here I may be about to build the machine."

Shego said nothing for a moment, and then asked, "What about the dangers?"

"I don't know. I may go tap his newer files and see if I can find out if he's done any more work on them. Only I can't be obvious. He's just a big enough paranoid he might try to trap me and hand me over to GJ for his own reasons."

"I can see that. So what now?"

"Now? As I said, I check with his new files myself. If I feel it is worth the risk, I talk to him myself. If necessary, I'll try to build it myself based on what I have, though. I'm not going to trust his word. Not after all I've already learned. Some friend," she finally muttered at the end. "All this time I thought he cared more for me than his stupid research."

"In the end, that type is all alike, Princess," Kim was told. "You think Drew just woke up one day and decided to start building doomsday machines? From all I've heard, he started small, and just wanted to see what he could do, too. Only his frustrations apparently led to a lot of egotistical posing and things got bigger and more grandiose as he decided he had to show how smart he was by doing the most absolutely insane thing imaginable."

"Dad always said he had self-esteem issues."

"You would have probably never even met him if someone had just told him what a great job he was doing back then, too. Only the more he got ignored…."

"Right. Only Wade wasn't ignored. He doesn't have that excuse."

"He does have the ego. Think about it. He's helped Kim Possible save the world. He's helped you face everything, even alien invaders. Now, how is the chubby little nerd going to top that one? How about creating unbeatable super agents no one can see coming?"

Kim, unseen, frowned all the more.

"Yeah, I need to talk to him."

"Just watch your back, Kimmie. You can bet he won't like being thwarted any more than Doc. Think about it. All those science types share the same ego. If they can't posture and show how smart they are, they aren't above crushing anyone that denies them."

Kim said nothing, and then finally said, "Even the Tweebs have their moments," in a very soft voice. "And, yeah, they're a lot like that, too."

"So, you really think you might be able to…fix this yourself," she asked, eyeing the schematics that had been printed off she knew had not been her work.

"I have to try," Kim said. "Because the only other alternative is to learn to live like this. Which I cannot accept," Kim swore.

"Well, it goes without saying, but if you need me…."

"Hopefully, I can do this alone. I don't want to drag you back into trouble, Shego. Your hospitality is enough. I do appreciate it, too. I'm going to freshen up, and then I'm going to bail. I should get back to Middleton by dark. The perfect time to sneak up on a few people," she chortled.

"Just watch your back, Kimmie. Don't take chances. You can bet they'll try to be ready for you."

"Oh, I know they will. Only not even they can see me coming now," she said with grim humor.

"Wade," a voice whispered as Wade walked back from his favorite store, hands full with the bags of his favorite snacks.

"Kim," he gasped, almost dropping his shopping as he looked around uneasily.

"Calm down. I just need to talk."

"Why did you attack Dr. Fyne," he blurted.

"You're kidding. That imbecile was about to start killing people by trying to directly infuse nano-morphing tech into their cells."

"Can't be done. It would rupture cell membranes, and…."

"He didn't care. Just as he didn't care I was turned invisible, and apparently stuck that way. He knew this was likely, and didn't even consider warning anyone. He just crowed over his genius at creating super agents."

"I see."

"So I hit him. He's a loon. As bad as any I ever chased," Kim spat.

"Oh."

"That said, have you figured out anything yet?"

"N-No," he demurred.

"Wade…."

"Not even some kind of….energy vacuum," she demanded.

"You saw my notes that day, didn't you," he sighed as they walked down the street toward his house.

"I saw some of them. Why didn't you tell me about that one?"

"Because it's not safe, Kim," he told her anxiously. "Right now, that machine is far more dangerous than your current state."

"My current state? Wade, I'm invisible. I can't touch anything without making it invisible. I'm damn sure not going to be able to attend college, live my life, or even date right now," she fumed. "How much more dangerous could it be?"

"It could kill you."

"Do you know that, or is that you distress speaking?"

"Kim, right now there is a better than ninety percent chance that machine would only kill you if we tried to build it. I'm still working on finding…."

"That's still ten percent chance of success," she cut him off.

"Kim. I don't want to risk your life."

"No, you'd rather just erase it."

"You… You could still do a lot of good until we could find a means…."

"In other words, follow you and Dr. Director while you string me along," she growled.

"What? No! Kim, I promise you, I am working on alternatives, but right now…."

"Show me what you have," Kim said quietly after a moment when he glanced around.

"Okay. Okay. Let's go to my lab. I'll show you what I've been working on so far. Still, I am being honest, that energy siphon is too risky at this point. Even my best modifications only grant a less than ten percent chance of success," he said as they neared his house.

Kim didn't reply as they neared his front door.

"Kim?"

"Let's just keep quiet till we're in your lab. I'd rather not scare your mother," she said in a quiet voice as Wade unlocked the door.

"Of course. Just follow me," he said.

Wade walked through the house, saw his mother sipping her pre-bedtime tea, and smiled wanly. "Hey, mom. I'm heading for my lab for a few before bed."

"Of course. Don't stay up too late, boy. Remember, you have a job now, and need to be up on time."

"I know, mom," he smiled wanly, and headed for the basement after dropping off his snacks in the pantry. Even she didn't yet know his job was with GJ, though. Some things even his mother likely wouldn't accept. Especially after all that madness with the Lorwardians.

Heading for the basement, he glanced around and opened the lab as he headed for his main computer array. "Just step back over by the scanner, and I'll rescan you," Wade told her.

He waited, but Kim said nothing.

"Kim?"

Risking the move, he activated the taser-web he had installed for his own safety.

He heard nothing. Saw nothing. The web just sparked and hummed. Nothing more.

Kim had bailed on him.

"Damn it," he swore and wished he had thought of keeping those extra thermal visors that day.

Kim eyed the new flash drive she held, easily visible with the special visor she wore by necessity.

Wade was about now kicking himself for being so gullible. The fact was, she had already crept into his house, and into his lab, and noted the traps waiting on her. That didn't stop her from downloading all his recent work, and borrowing a few other things she spotted she felt she might be able to use.

When she was about to leave, she overheard Mrs. Lode telling someone Wade would be back soon as he had walked to the grocery.

Knowing his habits, she had run down the street to intercept him. She played dumb, questioned him pointedly, but he still played the friend even while denying her any hope. She had the unnerving suspicion he was a lot like Fyne just then. So glad she was now a valuable commodity that he didn't want to lose her, even if it ruined her life.

Well, she'd find out.

Then she'd make her own decisions about what to do afterward.

She had left him thinking she was blindly following him into a clumsy trap and then went to her hidden Roth to fly off. That she had grabbed his bags of fresh snacks on the way out didn't bother her in the slightest. Her growing hunger had no conscience it seemed, and she couldn't help but feel he should pay for his role in her current nightmare.

She had to laugh thinking of him waiting on her to fall into his trap, though. He really should have known better.

Heading for Shego's island again, she let the AI auto-drive and eyed the stars around her as she stared at the night sky.

"Ten percent," she murmured. "Maybe. Maybe."
