Kim Possible: Invisible

"We have an odd one," Will Du told her as he came to her office soon after Dr. Director arrived that morning.

"Define odd," Dr. Director frowned, still balancing her usual caseload with the continuing hunt for Kim Possible, or for answers regarding her very troubling status.

Ron was of little help. He was ignoring them again, something he did tend to do even when things weren't strained, and when he abruptly left down on what was likely another mission for Yamanouchi, she had no way of tracking him. He had come far from his days as a bungling buffoon after all, and even he could prove more than clever even while he presented himself as the same casual side-kick at times.

"There was a major jewel theft at Upperton Jewelry Exchange last night," Will reported as he handed over a slender file. "Only there was no evidence of theft beyond the missing jewels. Apparently, according to the manager, he arrived to find nothing amiss, no evidence of breaking in, or any other mischief. Yet over seventy million in select diamonds and other gems were simply gone."

"A real professional. Who is out there with the skills for this one," Dr. Director asked as she now studied the thin file that had little information and no clues.

"Very few. I actually already cleared Shego because she was my first thought. Only the woman has not been seen in over two years. Not since she and Lipski apparently parted ways."

"She did promise Kimberly to go straight after their pardons. Since she is a woman that likes to keep her word, however maddening she can be, I don't see her breaking that promise now. Still, someone pulled this off, because that kind of theft suggests…."

"I had a suspicion myself," Will Du told her. "Which is why I interviewed Dr. Lode before I brought that report, ma'am," he told her.

"What do you mean?"

"The process Dr. Lode envisions possibly aiding her restoration? It requires a very dangerous machine with very select components. One of those components are at least four hundred diamonds of a particular size and shape to serve as focusing channels for the energy siphon," Will pointed out, and only now handed over another slender file.

"What else….?"

"Recall the missing fusion generator?"

"Which you never located, as all Dementor had, and which apparently Kimberly handed over, was a simple EM power module," she nodded as she opened the file to find a single paper with a list of parts.

"Exactly. The missing fusion generator the lab reported stolen is still missing. Only now they reported the module was taken first, but the generator vanished later. After Dementor's arrest. Someone had mistakenly reported it earlier for whatever their reasons. Likely an insurance scam," he remarked dryly as ever.

"Yes. I see," Dr. Director murmured, and eyed the list. "And the silicon storage tanks necessary to contain the energies that might theoretically be bled off the subject," she asked him as she looked up from the list again.

"Middleton Science Center reported three of them vanished last week, and they're still conducting a full inventory to determine what else, if anything, might be missing. As well as how they vanished."

"Did you speak…?"

"I have not spoken to the Possibles at this time, not feeling it necessary to bring them into this particular loop considering the potential for chaos her siblings tend to bring."

"Understood. And wise. Even if they had heard from her, I suspect anything they told us would be….suspect."

"Agreed," Will nodded. "Only this likely all proves that Possible is attempting to go forward in creating this machine even Dr. Lode admits could well be lethal."

"Yes, I'm aware of that much, Agent Du. Try to find out where she is because I doubt she is constructing that machine out in the open. Find her, before we end up facing a disaster here."

"You don't think it might work," Will asked blandly.

"I'm more afraid of if it doesn't. You obviously didn't read all of Dr. Lode's report. If it doesn't kill her, it might enhance the energies she already contains. Only he has yet to suggest just what that means. Ask him about that one, too, if you will," Dr. Director asked. "Just in case we have to prepare for it."

"At once, Dr. Director," he nodded, and left her office as Betty eyed the useless reports, and scowled.

"Where are you," she murmured not for the first time as she wondered just what Kimberly was even thinking just now.

She didn't want to think the indefatigable heroine might actually turn on them, but she was obviously ignoring them and going her own way just then. Only that meant she was already showing signs of the instability Wade had warned them of earlier.

A shame he couldn't have been more careful from the start. They wouldn't be in this mess.

"Princess, you still out here," Shego asked as she walked into the clearing well away from the villa where Kim was constructing the very bulky and odd-looking device built in a roughly hexagonal shape.

Three points were marked by large, gray tanks that would supposedly receive the energies siphoned off her if the machine worked. The other three points were marked by arrays of carefully positioned diamonds that glittered in the faint sunlight that filtered through the trees that would focus the machine's efforts on Kimberly, and hopefully draw off the phasic energies that kept her invisible.

"I'm here," she heard as feet moved nearby.

"How's it going," Shego asked quietly.

"I'm….almost ready," Kim told her. "Almost."

"I have lunch ready."

"I…. I just have to put the power source in place, and it's do or die," Kim told her. "For this, I'll wait on eating. Because hopefully, I won't have that issue any longer in a moment."

"You're really going to risk it? You could die, Princess," Shego said quietly.

"I know," Kim said quietly.

"Kim…."

"I can't live like this," Kim finally said when she stood there silent for a time. "I can't."

"I know. I do understand. Hey, kiss for luck," Shego smiled wanly.

"You want to risk it? Ron certainly didn't like what happened when I touched him."

"Are you comparing me to the buffoon now," Shego sputtered indignantly.

Kim only giggled.

"I guess that is silly," she said as Shego felt a hand on her shoulder, and reached out to feel Kim's slender shoulders based on that touch. She saw her hands and arm already starting to fade the moment they touched and then discovered something else.

"I….can barely see. I thought I could at least see you again," Shego said quietly as she stood before the hazy silhouette as she completely vanished.

"Try these," Kim said, her free hand moving as she seemed to be holding something in her other. Then Shego blinked as what seemed thick glasses were pressed over her eyes, and she could saw Kim in perfect clarity. "My only spares, so don't lose them. Even I can't see well without them."

"This is so weird."

She stared at Kim a moment more, and then leaned close, hugging the woman holding that small fusion cell generator and kissed her lightly.

"Good luck, Kimmie. Whatever happens, I'm here for you. Okay?"

"That….means a lot."

"Hey, I still owe you a few. We both know you've been more than a friend when you had no reason to be. I don't forget that kind of debt."

"You don't owe me anything, Shego," she told the woman as Kim stepped back, and Shego slowly found herself reappearing and her vision back to normal as she realized she could still see Kim with the glasses she now wore.

"Hey, I can still see you."

"Those are the only things that can see me like this. Needless to say, I didn't think Wade or GJ needed them."

"I can imagine. So, what now?"

"Now, I take the only chance I have," Kim told her. "You'd better stand back. I'm not sure how the energy flux may impact you if this works or not," she pointed out as Shego now watched her step over to climb onto the thick base and slide the fusion generator into the open slot before her. The machine began to hum almost at once as Shego stepped back even more, actually feeling a tug at the comet powers that infused her as the diamonds lit up and seemed to glow brightly.

"Now," Kim said, and reached to stab a single button.

Shego backpedaled from the glare as much as whine as the tug increased as if trying to drain her own powers, and took shelter behind a stand of nearby trees well away from the machine even as the whine turned to a shrill screech and then suddenly the glare and shriek turned into a faintly rumbling sound just before the entire machine exploded.

Shego dove for cover behind those sheltering trees as shrapnel pelted the forest all around her, and yelped as she saw something bounce off a tree hard enough to shatter the trunk, and send it crashing down. The deafening thunder still echoed in her ears when she finally dared look up, but everything was still beyond a smolder debris that set before her now.

She looked around, realizing she had lost Kim's glasses but didn't bother looking for them. She went to the machine, but saw nothing but debris, and shattered components. The diamonds once a delicate and almost artsy array were now scattered all around her. What horrified her was that many of the stones she saw were shattered as if they had exploded from within themselves.

"God," she couldn't help but rasp as she looked around. "Kimmie? Kimmie, are you there? Can you hear me?"

She looked around but saw no trace of the redhead. No sounds betrayed her.

She ran back to where she had dived for shelter and looked around. She finally spotted the special glasses not far away, and quickly snatched them up and pulled them back on. She ran back to the machine, looking around, and then spotted a flash of red near the fallen tree.

She rushed over and lifted the still body and pulled her into her arms, ignoring the fact just that contact made her once more start to vanish herself.

"C'mon, Princess, hang in there," she said, checking her pulse.

The redhead's heart was hammering like mad, but slowly calming. Her breathing was really shallow, though, and almost too faint to be normal. She was considering CPR, or something when Kim suddenly moaned.

"Kimmie? You okay," she asked ironically.

Kim groaned a little louder, and her eyes fluttered and looked up through the thin visor currently over the redhead's face as part of her stealth suit she was still wearing for convenience. And keeping it from anyone else's reach, Shego had no doubt.

"Shegoooo," she slurred.

"No," Shego told her as she held the young woman, giving her a mournful smile. "It didn't work."

Kim dropped her gaze and then gave a heavy sigh. Then she suddenly smiled.

"Kimmie?"

Kim started to giggle. Soft, faint, and then she laughed. She laughed almost hysterically for a moment.

"Kimmie, are you okay?"

"Okay," Kim said and sat up now. "I'm spankin'," she declared almost smugly. "Looks like I'm a real invisible woman," she smiled. "Only if GJ thinks I'm going to be their attack dog they're about to find out they are very wrong."

"Princess, what are you planning," Shego asked as they both stood up now.

"First, I'm going to visit Wade again. I need to know just what he planned. What he really intended. Then, I might need to punish him," she smirked.

"Kim?"

"Either way, I'm finished following their rules," she told Shego. "I am through being their dupe. It's time for me to open my eyes and find out just what my friends really think of me," she said so ominously that even Shego was taken back.

"Whatever you want, Kimmie. I'm here. I promise I have your back."

"Thanks, Shego. I appreciate that. I need those glasses back now. For the moment at least. Not that I don't trust you, but I really need to change and clean up, and I need the spares when I'm not in the suit or…."

"I get it. Just let me know whatever you need, Princess," Shego told her as she handed over the glasses. "I'm here for you."

"I'm glad," Kim said, glanced around at the debris surrounding them, and then turned for the villa. "Now, to prepare. For this, I have to plan everything from the start. I won't be giving them any chance to betray me again," she declared.

"So, ready to eat yet?"

Kim's steps stopped, and Shego just glanced around, waiting.

"Funny, but I don't feel that same nagging hunger any longer. Interesting," came the redhead's murmur. "I wonder what else might have changed."

"Just be careful," Shego told her.

"No big," Kim declared. "I'm not the one in trouble this time," she declared, and her footsteps sounded again as she went on toward the villa.
