Bittersweet Chocolate

Cool and Cruel

Ryo was walking home from school, staring at his feet. He was thinking about the last announcement of the school day. There was going to be a dance at his school, the spring formal. He knew who he wanted to ask, but she probably didn't want to go with him. He didn't even know if she knew about the dance…even though they went to the same school. She usually left a bit earlier and skipped the last few minutes of class. He looked up and caught a glimpse of bright orange. He already knew who it was.

"Hey, Rika!" Ryo called, running to her. She turned to face him.

"What do you want now, Akiyama?" Rika asked, suspiciously.

Ryo smirked. "Wanna walk home together?"

Rika looked at him in disgust. "I can walk myself home, you know." Ryo stopped, but Rika walked on, her nose in the air.

"Come on, Wildcat!" Ryo whined, catching up to her. Rika socked him in the arm.

"Don't call me 'Wildcat'!"she replied, threateningly. Ryo ran down the street.

"Well, I bet I can beat you!"

"No, you can't!" Rika ran after him, fire glowing in her eyes.

A minute later, Ryo yelled, "Man, pumpkin, you're slow!" He jogged backwards, so that he could look at the tired girl behind him. At his statement, the girl revved up again.

"I'M GOING TO GET YOU!" she screamed.

The two kids continued their run. They soon arrived at Rika's house. Ryo stopped and smirked. "You said you didn't need me to get home." He was breathing hard.

"Be quiet, twerp," she snapped. "This is my house so I reserve the right to be here. You, however, do not." She walked up to her door and took out her key.

Ryo thought fast. "Hey! Your mom and grandma aren't home right?"

Rika whipped around. Her eyes narrowed. "What are you scheming, Akiyama?"

Ryo put on an innocent face. "Nothing, Wildcat. I was just wondering whether or not you would want to go get an ice cream." He was sure his plan would work. He knew Rika couldn't resist her favorite chocolate ice cream. He saw her eyes change many different ways. He saw it first change from its suspicious look to relaxed, to tightened again. He read her like an open book. She wanted the ice cream really badly, but couldn't stand the thought of going with him.

"Akiyama," she growled. "You better not be scheming anything, and no funny business." She locked the door behind her and walked toward him.

Ryo smiled widely. Rika was actually going with him to the park to get an ice cream- with him! "Must be my lucky day!" he exclaimed. "So getting your normal chocolate chunk, chocolate chip, ice cream?"

Rika looked at him strangely and rolled her eyes. "Duh! I love chocolate ice cream." They were quiet for a while, the wind lightly blowing against their faces. All of a sudden…

"Race you to the park!" Ryo called, running far ahead of Rika.

Rika rolled her eyes. "I'm going to win this time!" she said, sprinting after him. They soon came upon the ice cream truck in the park.
