The Boxer and The Doctor

Chapter 8, First Weeks Of Being a Police Officer

Sunday came way to fast. Jane and Maura had enjoyed their weekend at Martha's Vineyard but it was time to go home. Jane was starting work Monday morning and they needed to get back to Boston. They left Martha's Vineyard at 3 PM and arrived in Boston shortly after 6 PM. They hit a little bit of traffic as they had expected.

Jane had her new uniform hanging up in the closet all pressed and ready to go. She was ready to start work as a Boston Police Officer. She woke up before the alarm went off and rolled over onto her back. Maura snuggled up closer to her and she laid there for a few minutes before moving. She was enjoying having Maura snuggled up to her. She was thinking about how her day might go. She would have to show up at roll call and then start with her trainer.

A few minutes later Maura stirred, she opened her eyes and saw Jane looking at her with a big smile on her face. "Morning Jane, why do you have a big smile on your face?"

"I was just thinking how my life is different than I thought it would have been. I am so happy to be in a relationship with you and to finally be a Boston Police Officer. Today is my first official day on the job. I'm excited and a little nervous." Jane said as she leaned over and kissed Maura. Maura snuggled tighter in her side and closed her eyes. "Maur, I have to get up in a few minutes."

"I know, as do I. I was just enjoying this few minutes before our day gets all crazy." Jane acknowledged her by kissing the top of Maura's head and tighten her grip on her. She would take this extra few minutes of snuggling with Maura anytime she could.

Maura's alarm went off much to Jane's chagrin and they both got up showered and got dressed for the day. "Damn, Jane you look so hot in that uniform it is too bad you have to go to work right now. I could think of better things to be doing with our time, but then I have to go to work also."

Jane smiled and shyly said, "Thank you! I love to be doing other things also." They went downstairs and had breakfast and then they both went to their jobs after kissing each other goodbye.

Jane walked into the front door of the precinct and heard, "Officer Rizzoli, welcome to your first day of Patrol." Sergeant Jeffrey Sloan told her as she walked into the station. He was waiting for her to show up. She was early but he was earlier. "Officer Rizzoli, I am going to give you your first piece of advice. If your shift starts at 8 you should be here fifteen minutes prior. Jane glanced down at her watch it was 7:48 AM, she was twelve minutes early. She was fully dressed and ready to start. She didn't need to go to the locker room and get dressed like some of the other new officers did. Tomorrow she would make sure she was earlier. She didn't want to catch any crap for not being early enough.

Sergeant Sloan escorted her and three new male officers to rollcall. The other student officers she graduated with were hired by nearby precincts. Sergeant Sloan was the head training officer and after roll call, he introduced them to their training sergeants.

"Officer Jensen you will be working with Sergeant Walker, Officer Smith with Sergeant Johnson, Officer Zaragoza with Sergeant Jackson. Officer Rizzoli you will be with me. You will report to your training sergeant every day at 8 AM. They will track your training and when you are ready you will be out on patrol with a seasoned officer. Your training record is sitting in front of you so you can see what is expected from you. When all of these items are checked off by your training sergeant and myself then you will be given a partner. Is that understood?" They all responded with a "Yes sir!"

Their training meeting lasted until lunchtime. They all went out to lunch together and then about 1 PM each new officer worked privately with their training officer for the rest of the day. Sergeant Sloan told Jane that she would report to him every day and they would work on her training and at 5 PM she would be able to go home. He told her that this would be her schedule for the rest of the week.

Maura was working until 8 PM so Jane said she would cook dinner for them. Maura wanted to do something special for Jane but she was working late so Jane would be home before her. Because she couldn't be there when Jane got home, she had flowers delivered. She knew Jane wasn't too big on flowers but this was a special occasion and she wanted to make Jane feel special. This was a big accomplishment for her and she deserved to be treated special.

When the flowers arrived, Jane sent Maura a text.

J: Maur, thank u 4 the flowers, they r beautiful

M: You are welcome. I will be home at around 8:30.

J: K, luv ya. C u then.

M: Love you also, see you soon.

Maura arrived home at 8:20 PM and found dinner warming in the oven and Jane asleep on the couch. Jane had changed into a pair of her academy sweats and an academy t-shirt. She was snuggling a blanket. Maura thought it was unusual for Jane to be snuggling the blanket instead of having it over her until she her Jane mumble 'Maur' in her sleep. Jane readjusted and hugged the blanket tighter. Maura thought it was so cute. Apparently, Jane was using the blanket to represent her.

Maura quickly went upstairs and changed into her own comfortable clothes, some yoga pants and an oversized shirt. She went back downstairs and took the place of the blanket. As carefully as she could she pulled the blanket away from Jane and climbed onto the couch to snuggle with Jane. She positioned Jane's arm so that it wrapped around her like the hold she had on the blanket. Then she positioned one leg so it was slightly over Jane's leg and then she gave Jane a slight kiss on the cheek.

Jane squirmed a little and snuggled into Maura not realizing it was Maura and not the blanket until Maura kissed her. Jane's head moved back and she opened one eye and saw Maura. "Hey" Jane said as Maura kissed her again.

"Hey yourself. How was your first day as a police officer?" Maura asked as Jane then kissed her back.

"It was great. I met my training officer." Jane kissed Maura and moved so that she was on top of Maura and then continued, "and I met with the other new officers and their training officers. We spent until lunch together and then broke off so we were one on one with our training officer." She leaned down and kissed Maura for a few minutes. "Dinner is warming in the oven. Oh, my trainer said I am working until 5 PM all this week." Jane added.

"That is wonderful that you cooked dinner. We are so domesticated already." Maura said as she pulled Jane down for a kiss.

"Yes, for 22 years old we sure are and I love it. I hope you are fine with it." Jane questioned with a little bit of uncertainty. This was a lot for only knowing each other a few months but she had never felt this way with anybody. There was something about Dr. Maura Isles that drew her in and she was so happy. She just hoped that Maura was as well.

"I'm definitely fine with it. I am in love with you, so yes, I am fine with it." Maura answered very quickly and Jane smiled. Jane was happy that Maura agreed.

"I love you so much, more than I thought I could love someone. I am just happy that you were open to trying a relationship with me." Jane said knowing that Maura was a straight woman when she met her.

"I know, I have never been attracted to a woman until I met you. I am so happy I met you. If you didn't break your nose that night we might not have met." Maura said as they sat up.

"Tomorrow night is my last boxing match. I need to make sure I don't get punched in the face. I would hate to have to explain bruises on my face or a broken nose to my training officer." Jane said as she stood up so she could get ready to serve their dinner.

"Jane, you will do fine tomorrow night and I will be there to support you as I have been since we met. I know you have reservations about quitting boxing but being a police officer is your dream and you will be able to box with them. They have competitive sports and once you are out of training you can check into all of that. I know how you love your sports and being competitive." Maura said trying to make Jane feel better about her decision to quit boxing for now.

"Ya, thanks Maur. I'm a little competitive. I always have been. It helps me keep this wonderful body you seem to admire so much." Jane smirked at Maura and extended her hand to help Maura up and then leaned in and gave Maura a kiss. They walked into the kitchen to retrieve the meal from the oven. Jane knew it would still be good. The oven was set at a low temperature and it wouldn't have had time to dry out yet.

They had a light conversation as they ate, each exchanging stories about their day. The first week would be lots of paperwork for Jane but the second week things would pick up and she would feel more like a police officer. Maura was adjusting to her new position. She was no longer a resident. She was a full fledged doctor now working in pediatrics. Her specialty was cardiovascular medicine so she saw all kinds of children with heart problems. It was sad at times for her but she wanted to help her patients. They needed more time in this world and she was determined to do her best to make sure they got it.

Maura was working twelve hours a day, 8 AM until 8 PM for six days a week. She had Sundays off for now. Sergeant Sloan made sure to stress Jane's work hours with her and the fact that this was only for the first week. She was working 8 AM until 5 PM for the first week after that she would be on twelve-hour shifts. She just wasn't sure what her hours would be yet. She knew when she got a partner that she might have to work night shifts. Sgt. Sloan said they would have at least one night shift next week.

They were domesticated and loving it. Jane's family loved Maura. Angela could see how happy Jane was. She had seen some of the girls Jane had gone out with and she wasn't impressed. Maura was a dream compared to some of the others. Angela didn't see all the people Jane went out with, so many of them were just one-night stands. Angela didn't know that Jane was as sexually active as she was. Jane tried to hide all of that from her family.

Jane had made the mistake of bringing a few girls home when she thought her parents were going to be out longer and her brothers weren't home. She had planned to have them gone before her parents got home but a few times that didn't work out that way. Angela was a little naïve at first thinking they were just doing school work together.

When Jane wouldn't invite any of the girls over for Sunday dinner Angela figured something was up. She never questioned Jane she just said she would prefer that nobody be in the house when they weren't home. Jane said fine and never had anyone over to the house again. That was until she invited Maura for Sunday dinner to meet her family months ago. As their schedules allowed, they went to Sunday dinners whenever they could.

Jane spent the next few weeks with Sgt. Sloan signing off different parts of her training record. She was going faster than he had expected. He was quite pleased with this new officer. She was doing better than any trainee he had worked with before. Sgt. Sloan asked Jane towards the end of a shift as they were sitting at a table in the squad room reviewing her training record and signing things off, "For starters you can call me Sarge instead of having to say Sergeant Sloan all the time. So, where in BPD do you see yourself in five or ten years?"

Jane didn't take long to respond, "I want to work in Homicide. I want to be a homicide detective. That has always been my goal since I was a small child."

"That is an impressive goal. You realize not everyone makes detective, let alone gets a spot on the homicide squad. You're going to have to work really hard and prove yourself to reach that goal." Sgt. Sloan explained to her.

"Yes, that is my plan. Not to sound cocky or anything Sarge but so far, I have achieved what I have set out to achieve in my life. I will work hard and you watch, years from now I will be a detective and then get a slot in homicide." Jane said with a huge smile. She knew she would make it. She had to believe in herself and in her goals. Even if no one else believed she could do it, she had to believe or she was setting herself up for failure. She wouldn't fail, it was not in her nature.

"I wish you luck kid. I like your optimism. Go for it. Down the road if I can help you in anyway let me know." Sgt. Sloan said as he smiled back at Jane. He really did like her optimism.

"Thank you Sarge. I truly appreciate it. Can I ask you a question?" Jane asked.

"Sure, what would you like to know?" Sgt. Sloan asked wondering what she could possibly ask him.

Jane sat up straighter in her chair and asked, "Did you always want to be a trainer for BPD or did you have other sights in mind?"

"Wow, you jump right in don't ya?" They both laughed.

Then Jane said, "you don't have to answer if you don't want to."

"Nah, it's alright. It is part of our trust building. I am for all intents and purposes your partner right now and partners need to trust one another." He paused and then continued.

"I wanted to be a detective but I didn't do well enough on the exam. I took it twice. I guess my heart just wasn't into it. My wife was near her delivery date both times I took the exam and I was worried about her and the pregnancy. She was having complications both times so I decided I would just try for Sergeant and try and get into the training office so I could train new officers. This job provides better hours for my family and I enjoy doing it. At one point in my life, I wanted to be a teacher so this is sort of fulfilling that old goal and yet still working with BPD. They both took a drink of their coffee and then he continued.

"If I had to do it all over again, I would do the same thing. I love my wife and my boys. It is hard being a cop and being married but my wife is very understanding. Her father was a police officer. He was killed in the line of duty when she was a teenager so she always wants me to be as careful as I can be. She wants me to come home to her and the boys each night."

"Ya, I understand that. My friend wants me to be safe and come home every night as well." Jane responded.

They continued to talk for a few more minutes until Sgt. Sloan looked at the clock. "Well, we better call it a night. It's a few minutes after five and my wife will be expecting me home for dinner. See you tomorrow, Rizzoli." Jane gathered her belongings and left.

Jane got home about 5:30 and noticed Maura was already home and fixing dinner. "Hey I thought you were working until eight tonight."

"I was, but things were slow so my boss said I can go home. If they need me, they will call me back but he thought I would be pretty safe being able to come home, so here I am to surprise you."

"Well, I am so happy you are home. I think we need to talk about medical powers of attorneys and things in case something happens to me. I want you to be able to have a say in anything regarding me if I were incapacitated for any reason." Jane said as she sat down at the kitchen island.

"Jane, …" Maura tried to say something but Jane stopped her.

"Maur, I know what you are going to say but hear me out. If something happens to me, we are not married and they wouldn't let you have any say or even visit me in the hospital until my family gives permission. I don't want you to have to go through that. I want you to have the right to see me and make decisions on my behalf." Jane explained.

"Jane, …" Maura tried to speak again but Jane wasn't finished.

"Maur, this is important to me, please can we just do the paperwork so I will have peace of mind when I start on patrols next month? I don't want my mom to have those rights anymore, you are a doctor and would know better. Plus, you would be allowed in to see me if something happened because I want you to be listed as my next of kin also." Jane said as she looked to see what Maura's response was. She knew this was a serious conversation so she didn't even try to joke about any of it.

"Yes, Jane I will call my lawyer and have him draw up all the papers. I would also like for you to have the same rights. I would like to list you as my next of kin. As you know my parents are deceased and I don't have any brothers or sisters. So, if I am doing this for you then I would like you to do the same for me. Can you do that for me?" Maura asked knowing there was a strong possibility that Jane would say yes. Although she knew Jane might have some questions about any medical type of actions that might need to be taken. She would have to be sure and discuss things in greater detail with Jane.

"Yes, I would be more than happy to, but I think we know need to know what each other would like." Jane said and Maura smiled because she was just thinking that they needed to discuss particulars.

"Yes, I will have the lawyer provide the questionnaires as well." Maura responded as she sent a quick email to her lawyer stating that she would like to draw up a power of attorney and talk to him about living wills and such as soon as possible.

Later that week they met with Maura's lawyer and went over all the paperwork. They both smiled after all the paperwork was taken care of. The lawyer had emailed the questionnaire to them so they could answer all the questions before they met with him. Maura had slid in some legal financial paperwork in case something should happen to her. She would rather Jane be an heir to her estate than some cousin that she didn't know and had not seen since she was like five years old.

Maura thought to herself that they have known each other for over six months now and all that paperwork was almost like something a married couple would do for each other. There was only one problem, even if she wanted to marry Jane she couldn't because it was 1999 and same-sex marriages were not legal in the state of Massachusetts or in any other state in the United States of America.
