Chapter 9

Frisk woke up the next morning. It was quiet. There was no sound. He wondered what the time was. He noticed that sunlight reached inside his room through a window. He had been too sleepy to close the curtains of the window. He thought about the conversation from last night. It was bothering him. The looks that the three of them had on their faces bothered him even more. "Something might be going on here that they're not telling me about." Frisk thought as he got up.

Frisk felt frustrated at the same time. Why were they not telling him anything? Why are they not letting him get out of the Underground, saying that it's impossible? Something is definitely going on.

Frisk let out a nervous yawn as he made his way towards the bathroom door in the room. He opened the bathroom door. His breath smelled very bad. He scanned the bathroom to see if he could find a brush to brush his teeth. To his surprise there was none. There were some small boxes on the bathroom shelf. He took one box and closed the bathroom door and locked it.

Frisk looked at the box to see if there was anything written on it. The box had a label that said "Teeth Cleaner". Frisk did not know how to use it. So, he looked all over the box to see if there was a piece of writing that explained how to use the box. He finally found it. It said "This is a product of Mettaton industries. Directions of use: Hold the box close to your mouth and reveal your teeth and press the button on top of the box."

Frisk followed the instructions on the metallic box and a beam of light was shot at his teeth, which was going from left to right and right to left as if it was scanning his teeth. It repeated this process for a small while and stopped. Frisk looked at the mirror and saw that his teeth were completely clean. "How convenient." Frisk thought. He figured that it was the work of magic as there was no other explanation for it.

Not soon after, he heard someone knocking on the room's door. He went out of the bathroom and opened the door of the room to see who was there. He opened the door to see Catty standing right infront of it. She had a small box with her. It looked more like a lunch box.

"Hey, Frisk!" Catty smiled broadly. "Here's some cinnamon rolls that Toriel sent for you. Want to join me for breakfast?"

"Sure, why not." Frisk agreed.

"Well, then follow me, Frisk!" Catty said in a happy tone. "I'm gonna take you to the dining room."

Frisk wondered why she was being so happy. There were two fellow monsters severely injured and all she could do was just smile and be happy. "She really IS a goofball, just like her sister said." Frisk thought as he followed Catty to the dining room. They entered the hall again, and this time chose to go towards the two doors that were facing the exit. Catty opened the green coloured door and then both of them went in together. The dining room did not look fancy. It was just a normal dining room with 4 chairs and a medium sized table. There were two plates on the table as though someone had already prepared a meal for two people, there was already something that looked like the bun that Toriel ate before on one of the plates.

"I was about to prepare some food for you, but Toriel said you won't like eating the food that we eat. You are one of those humans who dislike our food. " Catty said as she giggled. "Some humans were okay with eating our food, while some weren't."

They both sat down on their respective chairs. Catty gave the box to Frisk and started eating the bun-like thing. Frisk could barely hold his disgust, so, he looked away from Catty, just like how he did it when he was eating with Toriel. He opened the box and saw that there were two cinnamon rolls inside the box. He instantly smiled and took one of them and started eating.

"By the way, I remember Toriel mentioning some Doctor Rod guy. Where is he?" Frisk asked as the question popped up in his head.

"He treated Daz and Dolo earlier yesterday and left. He's a busy person. But he's respected by everyone here." Catty answered quickly. "He's a great doctor. He seems to have a solution to pretty much everything."

"Oh I see." Frisk muttered as he stuffed himself with cinnamon rolls. "Oh by the way, Catty. Where is Toriel?"

"Oh yeah, I didn't tell you where she went, did I? Silly me. Hihi." Catty giggled as she made a strange face.

Frisk did not know whether she was cute or weird. Catty smiled, seeing his surprised expression.

"As you heard last night." Catty started. "There has been a problem with the seal. So she has gone to investigate what happened to the seal. It hasn't been broken like that before. No one could break it. He used to look after the seal too."

Catty's expression darkened. Her usual cheerfulness was gone. Frisk wondered if he had said or did something to spoil her mood.

"And... And..." Catty tried her best to talk, but she could not. She started sobbing uncontrollably. Frisk felt sorry for her. The poor thing was pretending to be happy all along. Frisk never noticed that she was the one who was actually hurting. More than anyone else. Frisk tried to find words to speak to her. He could not bear to see anyone sobbing that much. Because it reminded him of his dead sister Lara, who used to sob a lot when she was alive.

Catty noticed the look on Frisk's face as she sobbed. With a lot of effort, she was able to stop her sobbing. She took a few deep breaths to calm down. She tried to force a smile, but simply could not.

"Look, Catty." Frisk said as he leaned over the table. "I don't know what you went through, but seeing how much you cried, I know that it's probably something big. Just…. Just don't be sad, okay?"

Catty wiped the tears off her eyes as Frisk sat back on his chair. She lightly smiled at Frisk.

"It's just….Just…...It's…..." Catty was still struggling to speak. "My brother…. He was… He was killed by Flowey!"

Frisk's eyes widened. He unconsciously dropped the cinnamon roll he was holding. He was frozen, realizing that it was the very worst thing that he feared.

"He… He used to be one of the people here who used to check on the seal from time to time…. And…. And….. One day when the seal had weakened, Flowey attacked him… And killed him!" Catty said, ignoring the fact that she barely could hold herself together. "And he… He was not good at fighting…. He HATED fighting…. But Flowey killed him and had a SMILE on his face…. It takes everything I have to stop myself from attacking Flowey! Even when we helped Daz and Dolo."

"...I'm so sorry, Catty." Frisk could not hold back his tears. "I…. I…. I understand you…. I understand how much you want to kill Flowey. I would too!"

"Thank you, Frisk… Really… Thank you." Catty said as she wiped her tears off again. "Thank you for… Thank you for being here… for me..."

"...I… I…. I don't deserve to be thanked." Frisk replied as he wiped off his tears.

The dreaded memories of his past engulfed him. Frisk did not want to be reminded of his dreaded past. He glanced at Catty and forced a smile.

"Don't worry, Catty." Frisk tried assuring her. "Everything will be alright…"

"Thank you, Frisk."

"I hate Flowey too. If I had the power, I would kill him too." Frisk said.

"Frisk…." Catty said in a tone so quiet that Frisk could barely hear her.

"You can have this last cinnamon roll, Catty." Frisk said, referring to the last cinnamon roll on his plate.

Frisk turned around and started to leave the room. He could not stop his past memories flooding.

"Frisk! Please come again!" Catty said. Frisk turned around. This time, she was smiling. Frisk knew that it was more of a sad smile and he sympathized with it.

He smiled back at Catty as he turned around again to leave the room. He was clearly surprised to find out that there was at least one person like him, who had lost a sibling. He was finally out of the house. He had completely forgotten about Daz and Dolo. Because of the memories filling him up. Sad and painful memories.

It was a nice day outside, with the sun shining brightly. The sun really looked like the sun that is in the real world. Frisk did not feel like paying much attention to anything.

He sighed as he started walking away from the house. His mind, still filled with sad and painful memories. It was not something that he wanted to think about at all.

He was only 10 when his sister died. His sister Lara was 9 years old. Both he and his sister were abused by their parents when they were kids. Their father would beat them up even if they made one small mistake. His sister was his world, who meant everything to him. His light in the dark.

They were living in a house that their uncle bought for them. It had one dining room, one living room and one basement on the ground floor. Two rooms on the second floor, one for Frisk and the other one for Lara. And the third floor also had two rooms, one for their father and one for their half-sister Rika, who died in a car accident along with her mother.

One day when Frisk and his sister were playing tag in the house, Lara entered their father's room and as she was running away from Frisk, she accidentally bumped into a vase that was on the top of a short cupboard and broke it to pieces. A plastic bag containing a white coloured powder-like substance which was hidden in the vase was now exposed as it broke to pieces. One of the shards of the vase had cut the plastic bag, causing the powder-like substance to spill out of the bag.

Frisk instantly knew what it was. It was the drugs his parents used, that they always hid in the house.

"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!" A male voice screamed in anger.

Both Frisk and Lara knew that it was their father's voice. Frisk was extremely scared and grabbed Lara's hand.

"Lara, we need to hide. There's…. There's no telling what dad would do if you broke this." Frisk said, with his shaking voice.

It was already too late as their father had already arrived there. Their father is 6'1 tall, with yellow skin colour, very short black hair. And a very thin layer of facial hair and brown eyes. He looked skinny, because he had been a drug addict ever since high school. But he could deliver a painful blow to his kids if he wanted to. He was wearing a white tank top that he regularly wore whenever he was home. He had a combat knife in his hand when he came into the room, which he threw away immediately after realizing there was not a burglar in his room.

"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE?" Frisk's father screamed as he noticed the broken vase. "WHICH ONE OF YOU DID IT?"

Both Frisk and Lara were very scared, because the last time this kind of thing happened, their father had almost beaten Frisk to death. Frisk was shaking uncontrollably. He held Lara's hand. Lara hugged him.

"Dad…." Frisk said with a shaking voice as Lara let him free from her gentle embrace. "The one who broke the vase was-"

"It was me who did it. I'm sorry, Dad." Lara confessed. "I really am sorry, Daddy."

"HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU BRATS NOT TO GO INTO MY ROOM?" Their father yelled in anger.

Frisk had intended to take all the blame for his sister just like he did multiple times before. Now that Lara confessed, Frisk knew that there would be nothing that he could do. Frisk felt a huge wave of dread and sadness engulf him.

"I love you so much, Big Brother." Lara said as she smiled at Frisk.

Frisk felt like he would never see Lara again, and that filled him with dread.

"That was the last choke powder I had." Their father said, referring to the spilled white substance from the plastic bag that was cut open with a broken part of the vase. "I hope you're ready for punishment."

Their father grabbed a broom in a corner of the room and went up to Lara. As he was about to hit her with the broomstick, Frisk blocked the way. He shoved Frisk aside with force using the broomstick. Frisk watched helplessly as his father landed blow after blow on his sister. His sister's screams were torture for his ears. He did not want to hear her screams of agony.

As their father landed blow after blow on various parts of Lara's body, she slowly backed up against the window of the room. She did not stop letting out screams of agony. Frisk could not bear to hear screams of agony anymore and lunged towards his father filled with anger.

"DAD, STOP IT PLEASE." Frisk cried out.

Just when Frisk got close enough to his father, he landed a blow on Frisk's stomach, which made Frisk fall to his knees. He could see his sister's face, swollen up and tears flowing down her cheeks.

"Its… Okay...Big… Big brother… I love you..." Lara said.

It was all that she could say before her father landed a hard blow on her stomach, that flung her towards the window. Frisk forced himself to his feet and ran towards Lara, but it was no use. She was slammed into the window and broke it to pieces and fell down on the street outside of their house. The glass of the window was shattered and sprayed nearby. Frisk's eyes widened. He wondered if this was a nightmare. He could not believe what he saw with his eyes. "Did Lara just fall?" He thought.

Frisk glared at his father with anger and saw that his father was frozen in place with no expression on his face.

Frisk could not hold it anymore. He screamed as loud as he could and started sobbing.

"YOU FREAKING KILLED HER, YOU MONSTER!" Frisk screamed at his father. "HOW DARE YOU!"

His father turned around and looked at him with an angry expression and came towards him. Frisk could not move at all. He was filled with anger, rage and fear. His father came up to him and landed a hard blow on his head with the broomstick, causing him to lose consciousness and faint.

"That's right… You lost her… Your sister is gone. If you don't step up, much much more will die..." Frisk heard a voice that he did not recognize. "Stay DETERMINED, Frisk, because if you don't, then who will?... "

"Wake up! Wake up, young man." A police officer woke him up. It was a police officer that Frisk knew personally."I need you to come with me, Frisk"

Frisk slowly regained full consciousness. "That voice I just heard was probably my imagination." Frisk thought as he got on his feet with the help of the police officer. Frisk's head was still hurting, so he touched it. It was then that he realized that his head was bleeding. He was still feeling a little dizzy.

He looked around the room. The shards of broken glass lay near the broken window. He knew too well that it was not a dream. It was real. He had lost his only surviving sister. He could not help but let tears run down his cheeks.

"Son..." The police officer said as he helped Frisk get up. "You need a doctor."

"Where's…. Where's Dad?" Frisk reluctantly asked, knowing that his father may even kill him.

"Well… For the suspect, uh…. Your Dad..." The officer started explaining as they made their way downstairs. "He's been caught… And… And you don't wanna know the rest..."

"But..." Frisk started to say, but decided not to talk anymore.

Tears were still running down his cheeks. He could not stop crying. He was sobbing. The police officer glanced at Frisk and felt genuinely sorry for him. It was not something that anyone has to go through. The officer felt his eyes watering at the thought. How cruel is this world? That a mere 10 year old child has to go through something like this? The officer could not find the words to comfort Frisk.

They finally reached the ground floor and got outside the house. There were a few police cars around, with their sirens off. There was an ambulance nearby too. Frisk then saw a body being carried on a stretcher. His heart sank. He quickly ran towards the stretcher, because he knew that it was his sister on that stretcher. The medical examiners who were carrying the body stopped when Frisk reached them. The body was covered with white clothing.

The police officer gave the medical examiners a signal indicating to them to show Lara's face to Frisk. Frisk knew that this was the last time that he ever could see his sister. When Frisk saw her lifeless swollen face, he put his head on her and sobbed uncontrollably. Even the police officer started to cry. Frisk had lost the person who he held most dear in the world. He wished that he was strong enough to protect her from his father. He cursed the lack of his strength.

"I'm so sorry, Lara…." Frisk muttered as he wiped his tears. "I… I am…. I am such a useless brother."

The police officer then signaled the medical examiners to take the body with them. They covered Lara's face with the white clothing, got her in the ambulance and drove away.

"Officer Carl." Frisk said, referring to the police officer who was with him all this time. "What are they gonna do with Lara?"

"Well…. They're gonna check if there is still some lurking magic within her soul and give her body to us so we can have a funeral for her." Officer Carl said as he wiped his tears. "If there is still magic in her soul, it would mean that a part of her consciousness still remains within the body. This is the cause of the DETERMINATION we humans have. You probably have already learned what DETERMINATION is in school."

"Well, yeah, they did teach me DETERMINATION in school." Frisk said, still being sad. "Why do they need to check her soul if there is any magic?"

"To see if there's even a small chance that she could survive. But if you ask me, I wouldn't be too optimistic about it. Since your souls aren't that developed yet." Officer Carl answered.

There was a brief silence for a moment. Frisk was still crying. Officer Carl was thinking about something.

The silence was broken as soon as Officer Carl received a phone call.

"What is it?" Carl asked.

Frisk could only hear what Carl said, but not the other person. He saw Carl's expression get even darker as he approached towards him after finishing the phone call. Frisk knew that this was probably going to be something that he probably did not want to hear.

"There…. There's…. There's no sign of magic in her soul. She is dead." Officer Carl explained with his eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry Frisk."

Frisk started crying again. Officer Carl felt Frisk's sadness and wanted to offer some help, but he could not. Frisk then wiped his tears.

"I… I knew that she was dead." Frisk said in a weak voice. "There's just no way that kids our age can survive a fall like that. "

"Well, Frisk…. Since your Dad is gone, I'll have your aunt come over and take care off you" Officer Carl said.

"Thank you so much, Officer Carl. For everything that you've done for me." Frisk forced a smile on his face when he said that.

They attended Lara's funeral one week later. Frisk sobbed even more on that day. There were not many people who attended the funeral. It was a rainy day. Frisk's eyes scanned for his mother in the funeral, but he could not see her. She never came to the funeral.

After the funeral ended, Frisk stood near Lara's grave, still crying. His aunt Beckie was there with him too, also crying.

"I may have failed to save you, but I promise you that I will become the brother you will be proud of.." Frisk muttered.

Ever since his father was caught by the police, he lived in his house(his parents' place) with his aunt until he was old enough to attend high school.

In the present day, Frisk had been walking for a while. His head was filled with thoughts and memories. He missed his sister. He was crying. He had such a difficult life. He wished that he could get back up to the surface soon, but was worried because of what Toriel said to him. "Lara, just watch me, okay? I will prove that I can get out of here no matter how hard it is. This is only the beginning!" Frisk thought as he wiped his tears and strengthened his resolve.
