Chapter 12
The living room was quiet. Something was wrong, very wrong. Frisk knew that he clearly heard a door closing in the living room. It was getting darker outside as Frisk looked through one of the windows. He turned the light on so he could see things more clearly. It was then that he noticed that there was a silver key on the floor. He picked up and looked at it.
The key was large enough to fit inside the keyhole of a huge door. Frisk put it in his pocket quickly and ran upstairs. He quickly went into his room and rummaged through the bookshelf in his room to see if he could find any book that had any information regarding the key. To his disappointment, he found no books that mentioned anything about keys.
Frisk quickly tidied the mess that he made while searching for the book, and put all the books in the bookshelf. Just as he was about to head to the living room to check the bookshelves there, he heard a loud trotting noise near his room. He stopped in his tracks, frozen with fear. What if it was Flowey again? What if it was the Royal guard? Many questions filled Frisk's head. He was forced to remember the two events where he was nearly killed. He was uncontrollably shaking, he knew that if Flowey came to attack him, there would be no one to save him this time.
"Frisk! Open the door!" Frisk heard Toriel's voice as she knocked on the door of his room.
Frisk was relieved to know that it was Toriel who made the trotting noise near his room. He let out a sigh of relief and opened the door of his room.
Toriel looked tired and was panting. "Frisk…. Have you seen a large key anywhere in the house? I can't seem to find it. "
Frisk knew exactly what key that Toriel was referring to. He did not want to give it back to her and decided to keep it to himself.
"No, I haven't seen it." Frisk lied as he looked into Toriel's eyes. "Where did you put it last?"
"It's strange. I clearly remember taking it with me. I must have dropped it somewhere." Toriel replied.
"Have you searched around the house?" Frisk asked in order to act like he did not know anything about the key.
Toriel sighed. "Yes, I've checked the living room, the dining room and the kitchen and I haven't found it. If I dropped it, it should be there. I think I might have just left it in my room."
"Ahem." Frisk cleared his throat as Toriel was about to go into her room. "What's the key for? The key that you're talking about."
"I-I… Um…. I don't think there's any benefit in knowing the purpose of the key. Now, if you don't mind, I must head to my room now. You should get some sleep."
Frisk did not say anything back. He ran out of words to speak. He watched as Toriel quickly went inside her room. He closed the door of his room and lay down on his bed, thinking.
What was the key for? Why was Toriel trying to hide so many things from him? Frisk had thought of asking Daz and Dolo or even Catty about the purpose of the key, but he decided against it, because they most likely would not tell him and may even tell Toriel about it. He did not want Toriel to know anything about it.
Frisk could not take it anymore. He wanted to escape. He wanted to go back to the Surface, but he did not have the means to break free from the Underground. He lacked the power and the knowledge to escape the Underground.
Frisk hated being powerless, and he also hated not having any knowledge about the Underground. He was drowning within his thoughts until he fell asleep.
"Are you sure you want to stay here and sit idly by and watch the world descend into chaos?" An unfamiliar voice asked as Frisk got up in a grassfield.
"Huh?... What? What do you mean?" Frisk asked as he looked around him.
There was nothing but mountains in the distance. There was no one in sight, so Frisk could not figure out who was talking to him. "Am I hearing things?" Frisk thought.
"I was asking you a question. Are you gonna stand idly by and let the world be destroyed?" The voice asked another question.
Frisk had no idea what was going on. "Um… Why would the world be destroyed? There's nothing wrong with the world."
"In the near future, it will be, if you don't take any steps right now."
"Huh? What do you mean? I still don't get it… Why are you telling me all this?"
"Because you are…-"
Frisk woke up before the voice could finish what it was saying. It was then that he realized that he was dreaming. He finally came back to his senses. "What a strange dream." Frisk thought as he got up from his bed.
Frisk felt very tired and wanted to sleep a little more, but he knew that he should not sleep anymore since he knew that it was morning. He made his way towards the door of his room and slowly opened it. The house was so quiet. There was no sound at all. It was a little bit too quiet. Frisk sighed and went downstairs.
Frisk went into the dining room because he was feeling very hungry. There was no one else in the dining room except Frisk. Frisk glanced at the dining table, which had a plate of cinnamon rolls and an empty plate on the opposite side. He sat on the chair near the plate with cinnamon rolls. He quickly gobbled them up as fast as he could and quickly went outside of the house.
It was a nice day outside, with the sun shining. The air was fresh. Frisk took a deep breath and enjoyed the atmosphere. He wondered how magic was able to create another dimension that mimics the real world so much. "This 'world'... The Underground is so amazing!" Frisk thought as he explored Toriel's garden.
Maybe the Underground was not as bad as he thought. Maybe he could live here. Maybe he could have a life here. Maybe he needed to accept that it was not possible to escape from the Underground. Maybe there was no way out of the Underground. No one has broken through the barrier in hundreds of years. And there was no method of breaking through the barrier.
But no… If he gives up now, it would mean that he would never see Jack or Rachel ever again. He felt like he was betraying them just by staying in the Underground, because he knew how worried they would be about him right now. They were his only family, ever since his sister died, apart from his aunt and uncle. He could not just betray them.
He was absorbed in his thoughts as he walked around the garden, admiring the beautiful flowers and bushes. There were flowers that he had never seen before, and it made him wonder what kind of a world this really was. It was quiet, warm and relaxing, with beautiful breezes that had small intervals between them.
"Oh hey, Frisk! Fancy running into you here." Said a familiar voice that came from behind Frisk.
Frisk turned around to see Blooky standing there.
"Oh hey Blooky. What're you doing here?" Frisk asked as he faced Blooky.
"Oh…. Um…. I came here looking for Toriel. Is she home?" Blooky asked in a curious voice.
Frisk answered, "Oh, she's not here right now. I don't know where she went."
"Oh, I see. Well, since I can't find Toriel, why don't we take a walk?"
"Sure!"
They started walking together. Frisk was itching to ask Blooky about the key that he had found earlier, but decided not to ask, because he suspected that Blooky might tell Toriel about it. Frisk could not risk letting Toriel know that he had the key.
"Say Frisk…." Blooky started to say something, but did not finish it.
"Yes? What is it?" Frisk asked as he glanced at Blooky's nervous face.
"I-I was wondering if something is bothering you. You seem to be thinking very deeply about something, Frisk."
"Oh… U-Um… It's nothing. It's nothing really. I'm not thinking about anything. I'm just…. Enjoying the scenery..."
"Oh I see. I'm sorry if I bothered you, Frisk. I was a little worried."
"No, it's not your fault, Blooky. Thank you."
There was nothing but an awkward silence for a few minutes. Frisk wondered if he should have told Blooky the truth, about everything he wanted to do.
"U-Um… You know, you can talk to me about anything, Frisk." Blooky broke the silence. "I won't judge, I promise. I'm a great listener when it comes down to it. We're friends, aren't we?"
"Y-Yes… Ofcourse we're friends!" Frisk said as he forced a smile on his face.
Frisk did not know how to react to something like that, because it has never happened to him before. It was the first time that someone said something like that to him.
They both continued walking until they reached a giant gate that looked like it was entirely made of metal. It looked as if it was freshly built, shining with the rays of the sun. There was a red crest that looked like a dragon carved in the middle of the gate.
"What's that crest in the middle of the gate?" Frisk asked as he stared at the crest curiously.
Blooky answered, "That's the Dreemur family crest."
"The Dreemur family?" Frisk threw a curious glance at Blooky.
"Yes, the Dreemur family is our royal family. All monsterkind is ruled by them. They're respected by everyone and recognized as true rulers." Blooky explained.
Frisk was curious. "Oh I see… But why is it here though? What's it doing here in the ruins?"
"That's because this place used to be our kingdom. And this is the gate that protected us from Dark Sprites when we were still living here. "
"Wait, what are Dark Sprites?"
"They're like us monsters. But they used a strange magic that made them so powerful that we had to shut ourselves in using this gate. This gate has an unbreakable magic barrier that prevents anything from harming it."
Frisk nodded. "Dark Sprites…. So that's what they are…."
"Yes, and they were aggressive. They would kill us monsters without a shred of hesitation. It was hard to survive in the old times. But then one day, our king led an army of brave soldiers and completely wiped them out and finally freed us."
Frisk was surprised to hear that Dark Sprites actually existed. He wondered about just how many secrets that were being kept from him.
